A Wider Range of Things to Hurl

You know those alternate animations some Super Strength/Martial Arts/etc. powers got a while back? I just thought of one Super Strength:Hurl ought to have. Actually, it's not a different animation, but that's a good way of making it optional. It could go into the costume/power editor as "Hurl Random Item" or something. Basically, it's exactly the same thing, except instead of a chunk of concrete, you throw an item selected from the random pool of Big, Heavy Objects that already exists for Gravity Control:Propel. So, an air compressor, or a rusted-out Buick, or whatever. Gives the power a little more cosmetic variety, and makes at least as much sense as finding a big, jagged piece of concrete in e.g. a tech lab.

But then, what are all these things doing wedged in the ground? Unless you make a new animation too.

Obviously a proper pickin'-something-up animation would be better? But playing the New Animation card makes the Baby New Year cry, so I decided to go with Suspend a Little More Disbelief instead.

But they'd be wedged in the ground. At least a big, jagged piece of concrete can be found in the ground SOME places, I don't know of any place you're likely to find a forklift or a piece of modern art buried in a shallow hole.

You know, I've noticed over the years that people around here are often strangely unwilling and/or unable to reach a little, which is slightly odd in a game whose setting is the softest sci-fi imaginable and strapped into the inherent limitations of a persistent-shared-world online game to boot.

I'm all for more things to hurl.

Heck, if it pleases Vanden, maybe they can have a rotation of things you would exclusively find in-ground. Fire hydrants, stumps, parking meters, manhole covers. Even in labs and office buildings, since, y'know, they can be found in the ground SOME places.

Thank you, Champion.

I like the idea.
One thing that just came to mind though is that the earthy/rock debris effect tied to picking up, throwing and impacting enemies is likely not alterable within a single power with random items (it could be, but I'm thinking it is not). So, some sort of neutral debris effect may possibly be needed for the random option.
I'm not trying to shoot the idea down, just pointing that out and offering a semi-solution )of a neutral effect of some sort).

I have to add one thing... A major gripe of mine is that the random items conjured by Propel (and the Alakhazamreact emote... what else?) are chosen client-side, instead of server-side, so the item is different for every individual player present.
That always takes the fun out of it for me when I see a car and someone else comments about it as a lampshade, hehe (dimensional/temporal/perceptual reality distortions aside).

Well, yeah, it's not ideal, but I was mainly aiming for ease of implementation. Using parts that are already on the shelf circumvents a lot of the Standard Code Rant, and besides, the power is so goofy anyway that I figured, why not. :)

Oh, absolutely! That wasn't meant as a possible negative towards the suggestion of using it for Hurl... I just keep hoping that some day they'll decide to code it to be consistent from client to client. So, I just have to mention it whenever it comes up, hehe.

Extremely hard.

The best phrase to use here is context sensitive. Currently there is no context sensitive data passed between players and characters.

This references back to the lack of shadow-maps in indoor maps and to why Power Customization was so hard as posted by C.Bruce.

Power and Costume definitions were never linked to the players environment. Even the global lighting source for the players is static, something that can be witnessed in the costume creator by toggling between the day and night backgrounds. While the ambient light changes, the lighting on the player... does not.

In order for the power-set to be aware of the tile-set, there would need to be a data-base lookup where the power-set queries the tile-set for type, then sets a random listing from another table with the listed animations.

On it's own this isn't such a big deal.

When considering the amount of information that now has to be transfered, it becomes a big deal, which is why the aformentioned propel uses a randomized client-side lookup for the items it throws.

Could the client-side look-up solution be implemented for Super-Strength?

Probably.

Would it be a short and easy task?

Probably Not.

My wish for "Hurl Objects" is for them to be a "Map" property.

The idea being that if the map property isn't set, then they use that standard "Chunk of rock". But if the map property is set, then it could be anything the map designer thinks appropriate, like a car, a computer console etc etc.

I know its highly unlikely, but this section is for wishes right?

[EDIT] And if that did happen, they shouldn't tell the players Imagine the surprise when you are on a scrapyard map and you start throwing cars!

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

This is a thing I'd love for Propel too, but it's a pipe dream...

HECK YES! Though I always thought Shield Defense should have had a shield throw anyway...

The makers of City of Heroes have already been sued by Marvel Comics once. I don't think they wanna do that again. Just puttin' it out there.

I saw this thread and thought it was about vomit powers customization.

I leave now, disappointed.

I've suggested this many times before, and I will support it now. If a new animation is needed, then that's what power customization is for. We got new animations for Jab, Punch, Haymaker, Knockout Blow and Foot Stomp. Why not for Hand Clap and Hurl?

Im down with this, different objects would be awesome, heck Ive been stood on sand and done hurl and instead of blasting my target with a cloud of harmless sand, no, he got a chunk of concrete...

so from my perspective I wouldn't give a monkeys if Im in an office building and suddenly a forklift gets tossed at the enemy.
