So I guess I threw a pizza and beer party, all things considered.
At least you tried to join in to keep having fun with the event you started, even when a group started moving it in an entirely other direction. My character really doesnt fit in with that kind of RP though (again more serious character, vs the party), and honestly none of my characters do.

Totally blanking the name of the Spider I was talking to, it was Moppet something, right? Remember trying to ignore the party going on in there and talking to him about the giant suit he managed to get, which was when you first walked in (emoting shoving both of us aside). I believe you were also acting like you were Russian, which led to an OOC conversation about how little each of us actually knows in that language, lol. Still, trying to just talk to people after that got to be an impossibility with how many people were in there at that time (think it was up to 15 or so at that point), which was when I left and then saw Paladin organizing the Tin Mage that I jumped in on.

I guess I'm sort of harping on a point here, but... Why don't your characters "fit in"? I mean, can't a serious character simply react seriously when something goofy happens? Even if it's just shaking their head and moving to another room (the other rooms being one of the reasons Nalrok_AthZim chose the Midnighter Club in the first place), it could still be done in-character instead of just rushing for the door as soon as things start to get Too Silly.

Cause I kind of suck at RP? I don't always think of the best thing to do IC at every given moment. When I left it was more of me just going 'F it, I'm out of here". Admittedly still kind of new to RP, and have lots of bad experiances with it in the past. At least I keep trying though.

My own character can border on Lacklaugh McGrumpypants on occasion, and frankly, his IC response when a bunch of drunk dudes show up demanding pizza and beer would be to leave.

Ice/Ice Blaster. Dedication to concept is an ugly thing.
Claws/WP Brute. Sex without the angst.
Every CoX character lies somewhere on this spectrum.

And yeah, what Xan said summed up something for Volt. Even though he might be (from that scene, I'd agree) a "frat boy" type, he did participate before that. Intelligently. However, I'm the one who plays him and gave him his personality. He's often absent-minded. Big whoop. However, he's passionate at his hero career and co-leading the Lightning Strike Initiative. I'll put his serious hat on every now and then, but it's nice to unwind a serious character (or in some of my alts cases - unwind from)

I'll acknowledge that I troll and grief, but I wasn't aiming to do that for that meet and greet.
I actually wasn't there, I posted based on what people TOLD me happened.

so to clarify in retrospect, I was not there nor did I see anything happen, so I can't really give me opinion on what ACTUALLY happened. my only opinion is that I was told people were griefing there and trolololing to their hearts content.

the extent of which, I did not know.

edit: I also did not personally report anybody, I suggested it that's what they were doing, to tell a superior about it, buuuuuuuut like I said....I was also just told they were trolling and griefing, I didn't know if it was IC or ooc or ICLY ooc. :O

Hehe
This will probably not be anything you don't already know, but the big key for such a thing is to just let your character decide. What would your character do?
Forget your own mind and lose yourself in the character's mind and go along for the ride.
When things come along and throw you out of it, try to just shrug it off and ask yourself what your character would/should do within the situation and go with it. Maybe find some kind of key to focus in on your character for those moments when you lose it. Whether it is something in their backstory, a piece of artwork that reminds you of the character's persona, something, anything that might help you zero back in on them instead of you. Maybe even something form your own life that easily relates to the character. Some emotional/psychological similarity/connection. Sometimes that is what inspires us to create that character in the first place.

Being new is where we all start. The only thing any of us can really suck at (when it comes to role-playing) is allowing ourselves to let go.

I know it can be tough sometimes when you feel like styles are clashing (You've got The Tick in my Watchmen scene!!), but that's the nature of wide-open RP in an MMORPG.
It can work. We all just have to be flexible.
That goes for all sides, of course, but we can only control what we and our characters do.

Anyway... Best of luck and no worries!

Whatever issues that folks had aside, it sounds like it's a shame that I couldn't be here. Hopefully there'll be more of these in the future? I'd love to be able to break the ice with more RPers and get back into the scene a bit after an extended RP hiatus.

Sorry I missed the event. In general, sounds like Xan and others had some really good advise in regards to future planning. I would also point out that every AE building has a 'quiet room' that does not allow powers to be used - you may want to consider one of those rooms for a future setting.

Good luck, and thanks for taking action in regards to strengthening the RP community.

Hey Nalrok, sorry to piggy back off of your topic, but since there's a pretty significant number of people in the thread I'm going to take advantage of it.

So I'm thinking of doing a similar event. I plan to invite a ton of people to my main's supergroup base under the IC pretense of a grand opening of his medical facilities.

It's a redside base, so people would need to be rogue or villain to enter. The theme would be very lax, though, as the base is a legitimate medical and research facility with a less than perfectly clean background. Would this prevent interested people from showing up? I figure, at the worst case, people could make a level 1 redside version of their intended character. Is there a time/night of the week that would be most agreeable to all time zones?

I was there with Freedom's Arch Mage.

I felt the meeting did what it was intended. I met and greeted people I didn't know. The frat boys showed up while I alted out and didn't sync with the character I brought so I left.

Like I told folks..
I host an event night at the Midnighter's Club at the Steel Canyon section on Thursday's at 8pm central. Anyone is welcome to drop by and join us. We meet and then go off on an IC adventure. (The group name is Incognitus, but like I said.. anyone is welcome)

If any, this gathering showed people are still interested in getting together outside of Pocket D and RPing. Every RP event I have seen on Virtue in close to 7 years has had some sort of drama associated with it after it was over. It keeps people talking about the event and even encourages more to show up next time.

I'd be all for that, Dechs. I have a level 40 Stalker named Emotionless; he's been looking for a chemist/pharmacist to reproduce the drug that suppresses his emotions. He has a stockpile somewhere in the Isles, but once that stockpile runs out he'll... well, he'll snap like an I-beam punched by the Hulk. The Kaison Corporation would be his first go-to if they opened the doors.

I would make that as well, Dechs!

Undecided with whom... But only because there are a few good options for me, hehe.

I'm seeing it as a bit of a high profile, swanky sort of public affair?
(Maybe not quite so much "swanky", as business/promotional?)

Actually, I think I know who I'll bring.

If I do this, I intend to set aside a three hour block of time at the very least. It will be a come and go as you please kind of event, so you're more than welcome - nay, encouraged - to bring multiple characters.

It'll being hosted by a former mobster trying his best to open a mostly legitimate business in the Isles. High profile, swanky public affair could be a great way to describe it.

My turn: I brought Blood Widow Ricki in at first, and things went smoothly but it just wasn't clicking with her. I had planned to switch over to Kometstryke at some point, once Muppy started giving the widows dirty looks I figured that was as good a time as any. I apologize over any mentions of 'free beer' but it was a spur of the moment reason for why there is a honkin' huge Destroyer wandering into the shindig. And once she got rolling I really had a blast, mainly thanks to Muppy and Operative Russkie and especially Cid. I even got to explore a bit of her lost childhood.

So, I for one had fun actually roleplaying, and I again apologize if Komet brushed anyone the wrong way.

Hey everyone, this is tentative right now, but how would next Saturday, the 13th look for my IC meet 'n' greet? (Mentioned above, the "grand opening" of facilities, high profile, swanky public affair)

I'm planning on a three hour block of time, something like 8-11PM EST.

Sound like a good idea? If so, I'll be making my own thread for it tonight.

Much as I'd love to come, that's during DXP weekend and I'll probably be out leveling until my eyes bleed.
