Demoing the powersets before we buy them?

There are many many things I hate about putting Power Sets behind a micro transaction system but is there any word on how that is going to work in regards to customer satisfaction? It would appear there may be lots of buyers regret if the system is implemented without some kind of satisfaction guarantee.

Before now if you hated a powerset enough to never want to use it again like how I feel with both NRG Blast and Devices well the money spent to access/experience those sets got you a whole lot more than just those sets.

If you spend points on any of the premium sets you lost out on access to other rewards unless you have a lot of points, pony up the dough or wait until you get more points which would suck if you end up hating the way the sets plays

potentially on the test/beta servers they might allow access to everything

if not then that would be prolly a bad idea, if poeple can "demo" powersets on the beta/test servers since none of it matters anyway, they might buy the powerset for use in the actual game

Good point (OP). Still, I don't think there is much you can do about hating powerset mechanics (street justice) once you have made a purchase. But in terms of graphics it would be cool to get a preview. Maybe there could be in-store npcs who provide cut scenes, or maybe there could be a story arc id listed in the store that you could play in the AE or from the store itself to see the set in action.

It is possible that the leaked vid of Staff Melee is the type of thing they intend as a graphics preview for new powersets we could purchase. It shows all 9 powers in the set, their names, and the icon. I imagine we will also be able to access the real numbers of new powersets for review as well (I don't really see how they could stop us, since you can just type the power names in brackets to view the numbers, but hopefully they may have a nicer interface for looking at the powersets numbers than that).

I can assume that leaked vid of Staff Melee is no longer around?

As far as i understand from all the ustreams i have watched and the comic con videos. We as in the players should be able to try Freedom before launch. Which will or should give us access to test out the new power sets.

I got the impression that the OP was referring more to after Freedom releases. Say in a couple of months when they add a new powerset to the store.

At the very least I'd expect to get access to the real numbers, clear descriptions of how any special mechanics work (Street Justice combo system, Titan Weapons momentum etc) and a video of the animations. I should probably be able to get a fairly good idea if I want to try out a set from that information alone.

Since they're giving us the ability to try out costume pieces we haven't bought yet on our characters in the character creator, it would be great if they could extend this to powersets. That way we could preview different weapon models for sets that have them or different colour customisations for sets that allow it.

And access to the powersets on the test server for those that really want to take them for a test drive first would make a lot of sense too.

I am going to disagree about them needing to allow demos of new powersets. Looks at game expansions, you do not get demos of them when they come out with new classes, abilities, content. Game companies expect you to buy the expansion if you want that content. Another example is DLC for games, no demos of them.

I suggest you read up on powersets and other items for sale before buying like you would need to do for expansions and DLCs.

If powersets work like purchaseable costume pieces, you'll be able to preview them in the creator and buy them from the stpore without leaving the creator too.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.

You could also just team with someone who all ready has the powerset and see it in action. Yes, I know it's not the same as playing it, but it still gives you an idea of what it's like.

That would be a great marketing opportunity for them. It'll be interesting to see how they decide to handle it. The OP does raise a good point; your suggestion would go a long way to addressing that concern.

While I expect them to release general info on the powersets, some people here seem to be forgetting something important.

The forum. Within weeks after i20 was made available to the public, certain number crunching players released all the info we could possibly need, and then some. Some of this stuff was stuff that the Dev's didn't even make available to see in game.

So do not fret, if the Dev's fail to give you whatever you need to know about the new powersets, you can rest assured people on here will go over, in detail, all the powers in the new sets.

Heh, yeah this is true. And if that blog that leaked the power data for all the new sets the other day was in any way accurate, I have a pretty good idea how the next 5 new powersets will play already

But I was thinking more for people who don't frequent the forums or want to buy the powersets the day they are released and are too impatient (like me) to wait for the number-crunchers to do their thing.

True, that could be an issue. I'm still waiting on the dev's to implement some kind of system that lets players know what the Weekly Task Force is without scouring the forum or asking people in badge channels.

[Local] Moonshatter: Are you guys considering a preview system for free/premium accounts to let them test stuff before buying it?
[Broadcast] Positron: Moonshatter, they will be able to preview any costume set they want
[Local] Moonshatter: Costumes yes, but is there any thought toward a Sig arc or powerset preview system?
[Broadcast] Positron: Not at this time, Moonshatter, we'll have to see what demand for that is like
[Local] Moonshatter: Cool

Testing powers out is a difficult mess.

Can say just on test server, but that runs the issue of encouraging more players to use test as their native server just to avoid 'paying'. Also, you run into the issue that it's not just a single power, it's a powerset. So it's actually pretty difficult to 'test drive' a powerset without playing it out.

To be honest, I personally think that folks who want to wait and see could be served by player-reviews/assessments of the powersets.

With the new costume creator we get the option to see all costume parts prior to purchase - if we try to finalize our character, we get an error message.

Suggestion: Allow us to load into a demo room with said character (with training dummies, and all 18 powers in our power trays) to test out how the set looks/feels (or even see how recolored powers look in an actual combat environment).

Powers selection are a part of the Character Creator, and the new Character Creator clearly allows people to look at and try things that are locked/exclusive for various reasons. I don't see how people couldn't at least experience the names and animations in the market.

If you're asking for, "How does it feel when I play it to level 50," well then too bad.

This is really all I think needs to be done. Stuff these things in the Character Creator, but lock them so you can't make a character with the set. That way, when I go into the creator, I can see all the real numbers for all the existing powers, to the extent that "real" numbers are ever actually real, and I can see all of the animations for all of the powers on the power customization screen, to the extent to which you can see summons and toggles and can see what these powers look when flying.

Realistically speaking, a buyer's best choice would be to look for YouTube videos of the powersets and check City of Data and Mids' Hero and Villain Designer, but I don't believe any of these are official sources. I guess the Paragon Store could give you numbers and links to animation videos like how the Lineage II official gear database gives you links to still of the pieces, but I'm not sure if that would be enough.

All things considered, I suspect we'll end up buying blind for the most part even with all the information in the world. You can't really understand a set until you sit at the wheel.

I think that's what they are planning to do. As it was shown at SDCC, the character creator allowed you to check out all the costume parts available, noting the ones you would have to buy to use. I could see the same thing being done with powersets, previewing them in the power customize tab of the creator.

And I could be wrong.

Letting you preview the animations in the character creator is all you need imo.

If people care about the number crunching aspect more, then they can judge by the numbers or ask about it in game or on the forums.

Well, less numbers, but play style issues. Which can be hard to judge.

For instance, Titan Weapons unique mechanic may really not be to someone's liking, but they have no real way of knowing without actually playing it.

I agree with this statement. While a war room would be neat, this should be solely restricted to Test only. Unless if they wanted to do some kind of demo-large room where you are level 50 (no enhancements or improvements) and just fight dummies with the basics - that still should be restricted to the Test server.
