Domination - Sadistic...Rainbows?

if you squint hard enough you can't see the rainbow.
So I've been thinking of leveling up a Dominator, but I've quickly discovered a distaste for the glowing rainbow aura that pops up whenever Domination either can be or is activated. Is there anyway to change the graphical effect for it to something different? I don't mind there being an effect, and I understand how it's important for there to be an obvious effect so that other players realize the Dominator is now a bit more dangerous, but having the graphical effect that's supposed to represent reaching the highest level of a Dominator's sadistic nature be...rainbows...just seems odd to me.

Tunnel-Rat has a dedicated thread for FX suggestions: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=260438
That would be the best place to request the ability to recolor inherent powers.
Who is more sadistic?
The Dominator, who can reach into their inner reserves and trigger a boost in their powers, or the Controller who's just really good at hurting people when they're tied up?
I'd love to have power customisation options for Domination. The sparkles suit my current Dominator, but I understand they dont work for everyone. And that flash of light when it activates is quite overpowering at default camera distance.
But why make the effect a rainbow in the first place? I mean, sure, it makes it obvious what's going on, but there must have been a better option. Or do rainbows have some dark, twisted purpose in the CoX Universe that I'm unaware of?

Until I see something that states to the contrary, going to assume VK is right .

Not as manly as this:

Of course, Dasher's biased... so YMMV.
(And yes, as soon as I get ahold of that blazing path aura he'll have a second costume to match the Heavy Metal version.)

Are they the best FX that could be given to [Domination]? Certainly not, but they DO match a similar effect that was in the game years before... so consistency, I suppose, trumps 'sadism.'
And this is where I submit my suggestion for a Rainbow Control powerset.

Whatever the reason, that is the way it has been...
However, I share your opinion and I would love to see Power Customization work its way to such things in this game.
Really, that would be fantastic (in my opinion).
It's funny... I love so much of the effects and all... but the amount of times I think about how much I'd love a No-FX/PvP-Only effects option sometimes makes me feel bad for the visual effects team, hehe.
"No, really, I love your work... But can I get you to do a blank option as well?"
Anyway, yeah, sparkling rainbowness can be a bit odd in the League of Sadistic Dominators of Doom.

The Domination FX follow the precedent set by other powers that boost controls. When the game launched, Power Boost in Energy Manipulation made a rainbow aura when you used it, the many colors of its graphic indicative of the cornucopia of effects it had. In issue 2 and then 3, when more powers where added with similar effects (Vanguard Medal and Power Build Up, respectively) they used the same graphic. By the time it was time to make Domination, it was well entrenched in the game that powers that boost the duration of controls were rainbowy.
Issue 16 made me feel like this.

The rainbowy effects had been used in other boost powers prior to CoV and Dominators... So, that is why it was used.

Another thing to be added to the list, along with things like recoloring/placing on minimum effects: Hasten in particular, and super speed. Also VEAT color customization...
And Kheldian color customization.
.........Sorry guys, I just insinuated that Kheldians should get some form of attention, no matter how small a thing like color customization...
That means that this post and anything close to it (ie: the thread) will now be snuffed and ignored by the devs and community team for all eternity. My bad.

The whole idea of Containment and doing more damage to a foe you have in your grasp seems to fit the concept of the Dominator very well. And I can see a Controller using Domination as them digging into extra reserves of power after the fight has dragged on for a while and they've finally had enough. Seems quite iconic and something I've seen in superhero comics/cartoons lots of time. Just swap the names obviously and you're good to go.
I don't ever see it happening mind you, I just think from a conceptual standpoint they make more sense to me that way.

It actually goes a little further than "other boost powers did it." There's a Why and a rhyme and a reason that no one touched upon yet.
All Build Ups pop red.
All Aims pop yellow.
All Control effects pop rainbow.
In PvP you would counter each one in a different way. i.e. Be ready to heal or dmg resists, pop purples, or pop a break free. It was meant to give people consistent cues so even if they didn't know the exact power they'd know roughly what it did, when it was used and when it wore off.
Of course in the modern game I'm of the opinion that is all completely obsolete, and we should be able to color them all as we wish and have the mandatory colors in PvP only.
But there you go, that's pretty much the entirety of why Dominators are sparkle rainbow beasts.

The true source of power behind Domination. Remember, the Well doesn't judge, it only responds to power and will.
I ask you, what is more sadistic than this?
"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
