Beam Gun

So, I've been thinking about a Darker-Than-Darkest-Dark Blaster since they announced the powersets, and now... they announce Beam Gun as a purchasable powerset for Blasters in I21. One poster who saw it an the SDCC said it has an effect similar to Sonic Blast that makes subsequent blasts more powerful.

I'm never going to get an Incarnate above Alpha slot at this rate...

Interesting! Did they mention anything else? A new secondary mayhaps?

I have to agree with your Incarnate comment. With Dark/Dark becoming available with proliferation, I'm still working on my Dual Pistols, and now we have another new set!? Not enough time in the day.

All I know is, if the tier 9 power is something akin to "Heavy Barrel" (an incredibly fun old school arcade game...man, I'm old), I'm rolling up a new Beam Gun hero.

It's not been in any real post anywhere by a dev, but it's there according to the folks attending the San Diego Comic-Con.

Apparently it's single-target focused and puts a DoT on an enemy. When you use a power in the set against an enemy that has the DoT applied your power has additional damage and effects.

I think it's going to be similar to Clockwork's attacks. I've been asking for Power Armored set that uses Chest Beam but animation/graphic/costume may have huge conflicts.

Now, this Beam Rifle can shoot out Chest-Beam like heavy attack!

It's going to be more single-target oriented. Sonic Blast actually has a lot of controls.

I anticipate: Slow but very heavy attack like Clockwork's Chest Beam.

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Those that are posting stuff about the new Archtypes also need to include that they are bought ones. Even to Vip's they stated on the ustream.

I hope not.

Seems a bit BS if your paying and now you need to pay for a new power set. It should be you get it if your monthly payer and then its locked out if you decide to go free and then unlocked if you pay the fee to have it unlocked.

It has already been stated on ustream today. It is a premium AT's the Beam Rifle and the Street Justice. Vip's don't get it free. it Cost roughly $10. I expected something like that when they are going to a hybrid model.

The set will be unlocked via Paragon Points and cost 800pts (beta cost atm). VIPs get 400 points a month so by the time i21 drops VIPs will be able to get the set without putting up extra cash.

I did say a "purchasable" set in my original post.

I guess the question is does the damage buff only apply to your attacks, or others as well.

I would imagine that at the most it only adds damage to beam weapon attacks. Sort of like how the different ammo types change things for the dual pistols set except you get additional effects if the enemy has the debuff on them.

That's just my thought anyway.

Don't all the blaster attacks already add damage?

So beam gun is a double defiance?

In a sense, yes. It is also along the lines of Sonic Attack's -RES secondary effect, but coming from one move in the set. The actual attack's name on the Beam Rifle set is called Disintegration (if memory serves). Essentially, it is a 10 second DoT effect that doesn't necessarily do a whole lot of damage on its own, but during those 10 seconds, all following attacks do more damage than normal. My guess would be that the set lacks Aim, replacing it with this attack, but still: Build Up from your secondary plus Disintegration could lead to MAJOR damage output.

@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.

Actually it has AIM and Disintegration has a lot of damage in itself, it's the set's third and highest damage ST damage attack much like Blazing Arrow and Bitter Ice Blast for Arrow and Ice respectively.

The real problem is, Blasters have only a few seconds before they die horribly and screaming like the defenseless cream puffs they are. DoT powers and powers that require a set up to shine like what this set has don't lend themselves well to the "I get two shots before I'm dead or mezzed then dead".... mechanic blasters have. I hate calling it a mechanic. That lends it too much legitimacy. Is there a commonly recognized word that properly encompasses "Lazily thrown together" "Badly designed" and "Fails horrifically without a MASSIVE money investment" that I can use for this AT? Suggestions please. Not a fan of blasters as you can tell. But I play them anyway because I like the ridiculous challenge they are fighting anything past level 30 where everything has a mez. Other ATs are powerful to the point of being boring..... I play blasters BECAUSE they suck.

But then again, there's really not a whole lot they CAN do that fits into this... "mechanic". They've very much painted themselves into a corner with blasters.

"Traditional DPS role". Hero archetypes hew closer to the old Tank/Healer/DPS "Holy Trinity". If you assume that you're always going to have a tank and a healer/buffer along then a glass cannon makes more sense.

Beam Gun seems fairly single-target focused so I can see Disintegration being handy on teams. Just wait for the tank / brute / whatever to take the alpha, then pick a boss and Disintegrate him and unload your various blasts. Your cone will do a bit of damage to the rest of the spawn but probably not enough to get aggro, and your single target blasts will burn down the boss pretty fast, sort of like a ranged MA Scrapper. Between team buffs and a few IOs it wouldn't be that hard (or expensive) to be able to handle aggro from one boss for a few seconds if you manage to peel him off the tank. On teams with no solid aggro control you'll be better off than most Blasters due to your single target focus... just burn things down one at a time and you won't have too much incoming damage.

Solo, I see Beam Rifle as one of those sets where you might leave the spawn size at x1 and crank up the enemy level a bit. It looks very good at flattening small groups of fairly tough enemies but not so great at mowing down hordes (unless the T9 mini-nuke is fast enough recharging to use every spawn).

This set is better than it sounds on paper for Blasters, at least if you're looking at the concept. The ST damage packs a whallop, and your cone is pretty good. It's not too hard to eliminate a mob in short order with your attacks, and Disintegration is getting an increase to its chance to spread soon, which should help. Throw that on a hard target in the mob, and it will hopefully spread easily in the future, meaning your many ST attacks will drop groups in short order.

Haven't gotten to the crashless nuke yet, but it should work well. I am hoping that we'll get a little more mitigation in the set as well... I'd rather have KD in the cone than -def, for instance.
