Everyone wants to be Statler and Waldorf.

Because of how shark-jumpingly ridiculous the people who are trying to be all serious actually end up being

Claws/WP Brute. Sex without the angst.

I havent come back to this thread in a long while. (Obviously). From it though I see I've sparked a great deal of discussion and possibly people meeting one another which is great.

The development of powers thing I dont necessarily attribute to the teenager roleplay X-men scene...though I did get a PM about that Westbrook Academy which seems pretty cool...although I didnt see anywhere on their website about possibly becoming a teacher there.

To further shed some light on what I mean by serious roleplay is my main character is human and has literally no powers at all. He is simply a scientist, and I wanted the chance to explore discovering super-powered people, and helping them understand, control, and evolve their powers.

I roleplay a geneticist, so I want to learn more about the science behind some powers, and when magic or other effects come into play. Maybe I can meet other like minded philosphers who are better versed on those areas of expertise to understand super-powers.

I guess I am looking for more humans, and maybe a mostly human oriented organisation with a few powerful beings for us to study/help grow in their story.

Mostly all of my alts I mainly use as NPCs to further along peoples RP or as contacts for roleplay missions, and that is the kind of RP I prefer I guess.

It seems I missed the Westbrook Semester signup, and thus I don't know if they even accept older toons who might want to be teachers. So if there any other RPers or groups out there please PM me.

I just found this thread and its a good one. I would like to say there are good and bad ways to use lore when RPing. Obviously the Arachnos Commander's story is one of the 'bad' ways. Using Lore to essential God Mode = Bad. Using lore to craft an interesting character = GOOD!

For instance, one of my early characters was a MA/IN scrapper called Titanium Steele-
Stacy Steele lived on Kings Row, wasn't rich, worked in a Crey Industries secretarial pool and volunteered teaching self-defence classes at the Y. Sure she tended to talk a little too much and little too fast and generally had an attention span best described as - OOO SHINEY! Then came the day when the giant clockwork construct Paladin first appeared and began tearing up the Row. Paladin was defeated by several of the heroes that Paragon is known for but Stacy was gravely injured. Reduced to a paraplegic when rubble from a collapsing building crushed her spine she was looking at a lifetime spent being ubable to even care for herself or move independently and she was only 27!

With bills mounting and her hope fading she volunteered as a research patient for the the reculsive genuis neuro-surgeon Professor Victor Von-Nueman. He had come to her personally and recruited her to be part of his progam to test a new type of cybernetic prosthesis controlled by direct neural input. As is all too often the case in Paragon City, that reclusive genius inventor is also a mad scientist who is not above using the cities poorer members who won't be missed, as reaserch fodder. Von-Neuman did have a prosthesis for Stacy, it was a completely new body, lovingly hand crafted of the finest metals and shapped to Von-Neuman's human ideal he just had to get her brain out of that old body first.

Whatever Stacy imagined was going to happen to her, waking up in an eight foot tall robot body shaped like an annodized porn star was not on her list at all. To say she was ticked off was an understatement. To say that Von-Nueman's genius allowed her the fine control of her new stronger nigh indestructable body necessary to use her martal arts to kick his butt was ironic is also an understatement.

Stacy tried to return to her old life but when you are an eight foot tall metal woman riding the PTA subway and someone shouts help- everyone in the car turns and looks at you. Its really quite embarassing. So Stacy registered with the City as Hero and her career as Titanium Steele had begun.

Since then her story has grown as time and events have occured.

Titanium Steele - Original Body

Post 2nd Ritki Invaison 'battle damage' body.

Repaired and Upgraded body (also used the battle damage as an excuse to switch her over to a SS/ IN tank)

As for Altoholism TS is one of my first characters I've played far too many to list here and outside of few throwaway ones all my characters have had detailed back stories that fit them into the greater CoX universe.

I've said this before, and I'll offer it again: The folks in this thread need to meet up and interact. We all seem to have like-minded goals for RP, and I'd really REALLY REALLY like to get back into regular RP on my beloved server.

All in favor? If people really are interested in a roleplay meet 'n greet I'll set up some sort of RP event/OOC meeting and post it to the Virtue forums.

With this MMO and every MMO Ive played I've always taken the quests and LORE in this regard.

LORE I think of as an acronym for Life of an Original Roleplaying Environment. It is basicly just the scenery, setting, and backdrop of the world in which your characters live. Only use this to help you figure out how your character fits into the world. A great quote from one of my favorite movies is "History is written by those who have hanged heroes". There are always two sides to every story, so IMO even "canon" is questionable. Use all canon and lore to give you "guidelines" not "rules" to making your character.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Get out of your bases. It's bad enough that people perpetuate the "nerd who lives in the basement" stereotype, and it's even worse when a lot of groups on Virtue tack on "RPer who RP's in base only."
QFT and all that jazz.

Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

Ok, well if the D isn't the spot to be at where is, blue side. I like being on my main most of the time and if i got rogue i lose all my hero merits. So anyone have a suggestion or a spot for rp blue side?

Several of the new rooftop areas in Atlas appear designed as potential rp spots. There are a few rooftops with what appears to be tiered seating around a central flat area, that would work as somewhat formal meeting areas, or a performance area with seats for an audience. One building sports a dome-covered garden, for more informal get-togethers.

Anyone take part in Red Side RP outside of the Pocket? I know Grandville may be better, but are there any specific spots that RP seems to be attracted to?

I have a villain right now who, though magically inclined; would like a chance a to RP with characters in the Isles. He is not a god, son of, etc... He is not intent on being the great ruler of the world - just power hungry for arcane knowledge.

I'm growing very disenchanted with the state of RP right now and would love even to find a RPVG eventually. There's only so much "D" one person can stand; with all the Succubi and More Eeeeevil than Evil characters, intermixed with the "I'm so Good, I crap sparkles" kind of characters - and all hanging out peacefully in a nightclub.

Suddenly I think of DC comics and a cold chill runs up my spine. Imagine: Lex Luther, Brainiac, The Joker, Superman and Batman are all hanging out a nightclub; knocking back drinks while Robin is off cruising the OTHER underaged patrons, flirting with the angst-ridden cat-boy that was beaten by his abusive father until running away to join the Legion of Doom.

If you find this normal, please walk away.

If this properly encapsulates your own fear and disdain, then please: contact me or post a reply.

@Intrinsic1

I may have to make this my tagline.

"SARS, Bird Flue, 9/11, Anthrax in the Mail, Mad Cow Disease. Pope John Paul didn't die, he preboarded." - Christopher Titus "5th Annual End of the World Tour"

I'm not sure how much this thread has drifted from the original post, but I started an RP character the other day with a concept involving her still learning her powers. Send a tell to @mahouneko if you have any interest.

In other words the emoier than thou type. I want to play with somebody who says "Oh wow. Look at this. I just managed to make a bird out of ice." not "Look, I just made a heart of ice. A heart as cold and dead as that of my father Satan, prince of darkness."
Wow, you've just cured me of ever wanting to "seriously" role play on-line. lol. i'll stick with one-liners in character and trying to personify a hero and/or villain doing super things.

here's my 2 inf, which after being discounted may in fact be worth much less than 1 inf:

I been roleplaying a very very long time. Ever since D&D. *note, did not say "A D&D" I love the City of X. I love making characters, costumes, backstories. If someone walks up to me and says something even halfway resembling something an actual hero/villain would say in that situation I will always reply back "in character voice." I like my characters. If you talk to them, they talk back. However, as often happens in the cities, whether it be just LFT broadcasts, brother can you spare 1 mil inf, is your team leader running AE, or a thousand other "in-game" questions that arise, I just answer. Not really in character, because questions like "How do i put this up for auction" is not something my Robot/demon/vampire/martial artist is aware is even going on.

But if you come up to me and start talking "in character" you are guaranteed to get "in character" responses. I will specifically not treat you as crazy. If you try ERP then it may get weird, but I will remain in character. Most of my city of X characters have E as very low on their priority list. But i will remain in character for the whole jaunt.

I wonder how many other individuals in the city this is true of. Sure, some will never "get it", or just do not want to RP. But a lot of us are just standing there, ready to be interacted with in character. Like a super theme park come to life.

I may start specifically start trying to only speak in character for a few weeks, just to see how many go along. Haters will hate, clueless will be....well, clueless. So what? I paid my nickle, and there's always that guy in red tights standing across the street to talk to.

That's pretty much how I am at this moment. I'll speech in character when spoken to in character and not when not. I've been trying to be more in character lately but it can be a little strange. My character Bee Hive came from a rather wealthy home and until she sprouted wings she was daddy's little girl so when she went into the sewers with a bunch of fellow heroes the first thing she obviously did was complain about the muck on her pretty hero shoes and the smell. ...Everyone seemed to think I was a wacko buuuuuut that brief second of in character-ness made me remember why i love rp and love city of heroes. I think I'll keep being In Character till I find someone(s) who'll play back.

If not I might have to switch to redside and force it out of people *evil glare*

I have no idea what is up with these nay sayers, but from my experience, Pocket D is the spot to find fellow RPers aside from RPing in pick up groups, which happen surprisingly often. Roleplayers are social creatures by nature, the more you RP openly, the more it encourages others to do so as well, and you will find it coming to you.

I have nothing against the Pocket D'ers, but I think there's a lot of us out there that aren't looking for the kind of RP that occurs there. A transdimensional nightclub certainly works for people just wanting to get drunk or pick up girls/guys/non-gendered rock creatures, but for anything beyond general socializing I think it really falls flat.

Pickup RP does work, usually, and honestly it is the main reason I keep coming back to CoH. It's not the most reliable thing in the world though and when you're running some mission/tf/trial for the umpteenth time it gets difficult to offer anything fresh beyond run of the mill snark (which of course is just as much my own failing than anything else).

I'd love to see a centralized in lore theme that could help bring the "doers" of the RP world together though. The game somewhat provides this with the incarnate lore/praetorians/coming storm, and I would be ecstatic if a handful of RPers gathered in the midnighter's club to discuss their next foray into the mysteries of the well of the furies or what not (leading to the formation of a mission/tf/trial team as they had people and inclination). With a little bit of prelude and discussion beforehand as to "why" you're helping synapse with the clockwork king yet again, an old TF could easily become a fresh source of RP and fun:

Vigilante: I was doing a little snooping in skyway and I found crates outside of a known clockwork warehouse that contained praetorian tech.

Hero: That does sound like it deserves more investigation, Synapse might have some more information, that's his part of town.

Rogue: Praetorian tech? I'd be happy to make sure that doesn't get into the "wrong" hands. *grins*

Villain: Who cares? The Clockwork King is no threat to me even with Praetoria's aid, I see little to be gained from this.

Not a great example, but you get the idea. I'd just really like any RP that was about the broader game lore, as opposed to showcasing individual backgrounds/quirks/drama (which has been my common experience with SG RP).

Of course the only way something like that will start is if someone actually bites the bullet and tries to get it moving. I hate being lazy

Hey,

I'd enjoy some RP with a group of like-minded players. Most of the time I enjoy just playing missions, but it's good to flesh out the character and lose yourself in him. I've got a few characters on Liberty and Victory if you ever want to team up.

They're not all level 50's, but I'm looking to bring them up and flesh out their stories a bit. My global chat handle is @Synergy Alpha.

I would love to meet more superhero RP types. I'm sick to death of tween characters that are super snarky/geek cool.
