Backpacks!

So now that there is a tab in the costume creator for backpacks (thank you Steampunk pack!) are we going to see any NEW backpacks?

(Personally I think some kind of techpack would look awesome for robot masterminds, mercenary masterminds, and traps defenders/corrupters... )

Why stop there? Why not throw in wings and some capes too? It could be a full on Back Pack.

This.

And while we're on the subject of backpacks, how about some word on that crab backpack?
Yes, the one that sticks around, when you don't need it.
Yes, it's also the one who's preventing you from using cloaks, wings and other back details on your Soldier.

If only it could disappear when I decide to play whack-a-mole, I'd probably play my Soldier more often.

Yeah, the trenchcoat is in sore need of a cloth option.

Let me preface this by saying that I LOVE the idea behind backpacks and jet packs. I've been turning my fingers raw campaigning for backpacks for years now, and just the mere fact that we have one now brings me great pleasure and hope for the future.

However, some of the fears I had about backpacks seem to have been realised with the Steampunk Boiler backpack, namely that the attachment and alignment on the thing is... Ugh. I posted the following screenshot back when the pack was in Beta:

The Steampunk backpack seems to be anchored not at the shoulders or at the waist, but somewhere in-between, at around the level of the shoulder blades. What this means is that when the character bends forward as the Huge model likes to do when running, the thing sticks WAY far off the body. What's more, the Boiler backpack has a convex back, with the mounting point actually protruding from the body of the pack quite a bit. This makes the thing look like it's mounted on a frame bolted to the back more so than like a backpack.

Moving forward, I want future backpacks to be rendered MUCH closer to the back, with a back shape that matches the curvature of the spine more closely. What I also want to see is backpacks extend farther inside the model's torso - clip with it more, as it were. If they did this, then there' be more backpack to show up when the character bends forward, making the pack seem less like it's sticking out. Finally, packs need to either be articulated in at least one place so as to follow the curve of the spine as the character animates, or otherwise they need to be small enough to not extend below the bottom of the rib cage where they could clip with the lower back.

I want to see more backpacks. Lots more backpacks, as a point of fact. I've been waiting for these things for years, an I hope and pray that we'll see actual running jet packs before too long. However, I also believe that there's more work to be done on the backpack tech to make the things fit our backs better.

Hoping for the coats and backpacks to bloody well work together withought me needing to make my SoA banes then make costume with bolero or trench, then respec to crab and pray the darn thing doesn't default back to the stadard one. For a time I was running arround on a male crab with a neat 'albeit short' leather jacket with a gold backpack... Till I recently tried to use the costume editor for new shoulders and discovered I couldnt withought loosing that.

Speaking of which... can we have some more shoulders that go far enough round the back that they look like they can "connect" to the packs and therefore support the mass/wieght?

Just asking...

I think you pretty much highlighted the well known reasons why it's taken this long for the Devs to finally start giving us -any- kind of costume oriented backpacks. I can't really speak as to why the original character models caused backpacks to be such a hard thing to do "right" in this game or why it still seems like a goal they haven't quite reached yet. But at this point I'm totally willing to get more packs added to this game even if they are only 90% good instead of totally perfect.

I'm glad the Devs tried their best to get these things to fit our characters' backs perfectly. But clearly it's time for a bit of compromise to their otherwise exacting standards. Basically after 7+ years I'd rather (for example) have a costume item jet pack that might not look great from a few posing angles than not have one at all. *shrugs*

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the delay with backpacks had something to do with there only being so many nodes, or something, to attach costume pieces to, something like 32, and they were out of them or VERY low and had other things they wanted the nodes for before backpacks.

No, I agree with you, I want to see jet packs in the game, and BAD. For the moment, though, I'd like to stick to "small" jet packs like the Jingle Jet or the Goldbricker backpack, rather than monstrous abominations like the Raptor Pack. As they work on their tech and sort out their alignment, then we could look for bigger packs that extend down past the waist, if if we had to have priorities, small backpacks seem like a good idea for a starter, um... "Pack."

I'm surprised that, now that we actually have backpacks, they didn't make that Steampunk Jetpack a back option, as well. Seemed a little lazy.

TOTALLY. I'd rather have clipped quivers and tech packs and scabbard-y things (you know, like that other game) than not.

Throw in the oft-requested wider range of options for the Chest Slider, and make it the Rack & Back Pack.
