Average height
So, the fact that I'm either towering over or a full foot shorter than most people is driving me crazy. Can you guys suggest a height for an -average, human male-?
And.. I mean average in CoH. Apparently being just over six feet makes you a little person in this game. |
Do you have the science booster? If so, you could adjust your height till you get to where you're happy.
And by people, I'm guessing you mean the enemies? What ones? Council tend to be super soldiers, so they're kinda supped up.
I'm thinking maybe you should put it at the half way mark between 6ft and 7ft and see if that works for you.

I'll try that, then. I got a good height with one of my characters but have somehow made every one after him a giant, even though I try not to. It's hard to gauge a character's height without NPCs or other characters around to compare it to.
I've found that around 6' 6" on the height slider puts you at about average in comparison to most NPCs. Typically I'll have males at around 6' 6" and females a few inches shorter at 6' - 6' 3", depending on the character.
Incidentally, Statesman's a bit of a shortarse when compared to other NPCs (not as diminutive as Manticore though). States is around 6' 3" or 6' 4". Considerably shorter than Imperious, who is at least 7'.
Oddly, Marauder is taller than BABs. Must be all that Enriche.

Average contact/civilian NPCs are typically about 6'4" for males, and 6'0" for females, give or take a few inches. Of course, certain enemies are ridiculously tall, like the Council soldiers, while other contacts were probably made with realistic heights, causing them to look puny compared to the average NPC.

There's a little trick to height, and that's to ignore the ruler almost completely. "Average" height is the middle of the height slider, which puts you at somewhere between 6'6'' and 7'' on the ruler on a Male model. That's where most Paragon City Civilians are, that's where Hellions and Skulls are, and basically any NPC which uses a custom one-piece model defaults to middle slider. If you make a Female character, then her middle slider will be a good foot lower than where the middle Male slider is, because as we all know, women are always shorter than men
There is a problem with this, however. Stock NPC civilians, one-piece NPC villains and most of the OLD content is scaled to the slider and is 6'6''+. NEW NPCs made in the actual costume creator, however, such as some Praetorian civilians, almost all the Praetorian villains and so on, are scaled to the ruler and run off a 6' base.
There really isn't a very good way to get an "average" height simply because the game's NPCs are all over the place.

I think I've only seen this in Cap Au Diable, but some of the roaming citizens vary in size dramatically, some of them look like they hit the bottom of the tallness slider and sometimes they're just a head shorter than my giant characters.
Maybe those Luddites are onto something...

Ridiculous.
61866 - A Series of Unfortunate Kidnappings - More than a coincidence?
2260 - The Burning of Hearts - A green-eyed monster holds the match.
379248 - The Spider Without Fangs - NEW - Some lessons learned (more or less.)
I'm 5 foot 5 and half in RL, but I had to add a foot to my avatar to feel normal compared to the civilians on the streets

Sexual dimorphism isn't as pronounced in humans as in some species (and there's a metric ton of variation between individuals), but the average woman IS significantly smaller than the average man, both in height and in body mass. Them's the scientific breaks.
That's the advantage of playing characters that aren't human, I guess. I've always been more concerned about their height in comparison to each other than how they stacked up against the NPCs or civilians.
Somehow most of the crew have ended up being on the average-to-a-little-tall side compared to the goons and non-Huge model Praetorian contacts (Well, except for Eddie. He's not much taller than Rose; the 16 year-old baby of the family. )... but they really do make some of the older Primal models look like shrimp. o_0

Not at all...just that the average female is shorter than the average male. So cheer up Sam. Nowhere does it day women can't be tall.

But that's not all. Weapon size scales to your model. Huge characters get huge weapons, naturally, while Male characters get pretty large ones. Female characters, however, get incredibly small weapons, especially for broadsword. BABs reasoning back in the day was to scale them to the model's hands, insisting that Males and Huge had hands that were out of proportion. "The Huge model hand is as big as the Female model head!" BABs famously said once, but what this means is that women end up with small dinky swords and axes.
You can see how greatly the Legacy Broadsword outsizes ALL other weapons women have access to, including Rularuu's Bane, the weapon which was supposed to be impractically huge. That's because women use the same Legacy Broadsword model (same size) as the Huge model, but all of their other weapons are dramatically scaled down. And we had to fight tooth and nail to retain even that. BABs scaled that down, too, when weapon customization was still in Beta. And now that I think ahead to Titanic Weapons, I am legitimately worried.
The City of Heroes "aesthetic" has always seen women as small, skinny, lightweight fighters to the point where the solitary few exceptions (of which I can only name a single - Doc Delilah), and the height slider is just one aspect of this. I intend to keep bugging David Nakayama about that muscular skin texture we talked about, and if that comes through, it will be a major step towards greater diversity. If women get actually LARGE Titanic Weapons, that will be another good step, but I fear that many of the Titanic Weapons options they get access to will still be smaller than the Legacy Broadsword.

You can't really expect them to design the avatar creator to cater for every single pervet who might get their hands on it - they have to be more mainstream with it to appeal to normal people
Women are generally smaller than men, but can still kick just as much butt without needing to look like men, or carry weapons that scream of overcompensating

It does, actually. The "height" slider is actually a scale slider, and when it starts off a small base, it ends up with a smaller maximum, as well. A max height female character is still a good foot shorter than a max height Male character, yet a max height Huge character is the exact same height as the Male. Even more amusing is the fact that the Male scale slider goes fro 0 (middle) to 25 (right end) while the female one goes from 0 to 34, I think, and max height women are still significantly shorter than max height men.

Look on the bright side, Sam. CoH acknowledges that women can fight. That's better than the shake they usually get in advertising or pro wrestling.

You may as well complain that men haven't as big boobs as women, I think you could actually make a better case for that as some bodybuilders could make many ladies jealous.

All of this doesn't change the fact that either the character creator ruler is wrong, or otherwise three quarters of the NPCs in the game are the wrong height. Even ignoring the absurdity that are the University tutors both hero-side and villain-side, common thugs like the Skulls, Hellions, Trolls, Outcasts, Family and so on are HUGE. 7 feet tall or thereabout, if the ruler is to be believed.
Once upon a time, I could simply tell people "Ignore the ruler, go by mid-slider." but then the developers started making NPCs who DO match the ruler, especially in Praetoria, where even the stock civilians are not super-giant. These days, I don't know what to say. I just keep my fingers crossed that the unique-model enemies will either get upgraded to new graphics and given more reasonable height or otherwise just rescaled.
Until such a time, though, I'd still advise looking at mid-slider as "average height" for tall men and mid slider for women as average height for short women.

I have always wondered why the Legacy weapons were so much larger than the custom options.. That disparity is not there on male/Huge toons?
