Well, I'll concede that point to you; no, you do not get any sort of confirmation when you purchase something from Christy or Michael. But IS the Certificate/Voucher system being used for store purchases? All I know is that they're being tied to the Paragon Rewards program.

Also, Astral and Empyrean Merits are an entirely in-game currency, with no relation to real money, whereas Paragon Points do directly tie in to money... This is confusing.

Anyway, rather than ranting on this way, why not PM one of the community reps and ask for clarification? Like I said, I'm assuming that it will email you a receipt... but I'd feel better if that assumption were confirmed by a redname.

Responsibility is irrelevant.
It is a COMMON, DESIRED and HELPFUL feature. That's all that matters. By the current standards of e-commerce, lacking that feature makes a site deficient.

In reality, that is the bottom line.

The Certificate/Voucher is being used for the market. They've already said account wide and character purchases, which directly equates to the existing system. The Tier 9 consumables available for purchase (everything except the Signature Summons) are exactly the same as the ones on the market. I don't see why they would be claimed any differently. If they were claimed differently that would represent a colossal waste of effort.

How about this: I fully expect that buying the Paragon Points (not the 400-550 free points) themselves will generate a receipt, but using the Paragon Points will only generate certificates & vouchers.

To be fair I bought most of those on sale, I was a runner up in a contest (loading screen contest) and got the magic and mutant packs as my prize, and was lucky with the coralax costume code. My second account (which is inactive most of the time, and will go premium) has a Retail GvE (bought at $10), and GR:Complete ($9 from Steam). I think I paid full price on the origins, steampunk, booster 1:technology, and booster 3:Super Science. I was gifted the buddy code (equal to the base CoH game in 2005), the CoH DVD code, and the CoV Collector's DVD. On my main account I bought the AE/Mac edition and the GR:Complete Retail Box (had to wait 2 weeks because of EBGames). That is over 6 years. I've also managed to get the 12+2 subscription twice, and when my subscription renews in December, I'll get it again thanks to last year's promotion.

I save money where I can, but this is pretty much the only MMO I play. I haven't bought many games in the last 3-4 years.

As far as being "casual" there are many different types of "casual", and by a lot of the definitions, I'm not. Now excuse me while I go through my CoH logs to find out how many more incarnate trials I've run. I'm up to 275 so far (on the live servers, not counting the beta/pre-beta trials), but I'm missing a month, thus needing to go through my logs.

Just my two orange cents!
This has never been the intent of Freedom Friday. The intent of Freedom Friday has always been to answer questions from folks who otherwise wouldn't have their questions answered.

Freedom Friday is another way of reaching out to players outside of the forums. The forums hit a limited segment of our Community and Facebook has broad reach. This combines with the fact that a considerable number of folks who follow us on Facebook are not current subscribers to the game, as evidenced by many of the comments.

Not everything has to be a reveal. We've been doing quite a bit of revealing as of late .

Sure, answering stuff that's only been on the forums makes sense on the broad appeal thing. That still leaves the mass asking/answering of questions that have been answered on the official summary page as kind of annoying. >.>

Crap. I have to get back to following the Forums more rather than scanning the titles of messages.

I really hope a Red Name proves your fears wrong on this or else i'm not going to be using the store either. I've bought (though on a budget myself) every pack except the Party Pack. I pre-bought GR through the website here and have bought server transfers and additional slots...and once even a name change when I realised i'd really goofed on a name and overlooked long enough to establsih the character as a favourite. Not to mention the yearly subscriptions I get.

I'd hate not to be able to use the Paragon Market the way it's intended.

Apparently my concerns about a receipt seem to be partially unfounded. My concern about getting a lot of emails from the market seems to be dead on though.

I'm still disappointed that they didn't think a history should have been included with release.

Freedom Friday is starting up! Today, it's City of Heroes Freedom™ general Q&A. Ask any questions you might have about Freedom on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/CityofHeroes

Posted

Here's part 1 of today's Freedom Friday Q and A. Today's topic was a free for all in regards to CoH Freedom

Q. The biggest question in our household is when does Freedom go live?

A. Freedom will launch later this year. If you’re a current subscriber, you can check out CoH Freedom on the Beta Server now!

Q. What were the PvP changes Positron was trying to fit in with Freedom’s launch (if they could find time/manpower)?

A. Positron had some ideas for PvP, however what those are and what the time timetable is for them is not something we’re commenting on right now

Q. I was under the impression that Epic Archetypes could run the new tutorial and choose Hero or Villain right off the bat, but this seems not to be the case. Was I misled or has this changed?

A. HEATs and VEATs are locked to either Hero or Villain, so when you select either you’ll automatically be that alignment.

Q. Will the Freedom beta open for free players if not can we have better idea when Freedom will launches?

A. The CoH Freedom beta is a VIP-only beta. Freedom will launch later this year for free players to join the game!

Q. Will those of us that have Mastermind characters but haven’t played in a few months be out of luck or will existing masterminds be accessable for free?

A. Depending on your status in the Paragon Rewards program, Premium players may have access to Masterminds. There will also be an option to purchase the Mastermind AT in the Paragon Market for Premium players who haven’t reached those tier rewards, or for free who want to play the archetype.

Q. Will there be any more costume items, CC emotes, normal emotes, auras, etc. in the live launch than we have in beta? Right now, I’m just seeing tons of stuff from the boosters and that is a little disappointing as I already own them.

A. The Paragon Market has new things that are not in any of the current booster packs. In addition, we plan to roll out new things in the Paragon Market every week.

Q. Will there be any difference between heroes and villains after Freedom hits? Other than story arcs, contacts, and badges? Will there be any point in staying loyal to one side other than for theme?

A. The things you mentioned (story arcs, contacts, badges, and even a character’s theme) are the differences. You’ll experience different things as a Hero or a Villain.

A. To add to that, however, you’ll be able to play an AT on hero/villain side in CoH Freedom with the exception of HEATs and VEATs

Q. Say I’m a returning player, and I have characters from my previous time on CoH. Will I be able to choose which characters I can keep or will they just be locked out?

A. You will have a choice in which characters you keep. The number of characters you will be able to play depends on your earned Global Character Slot Tokens.

Q. For VIP, will the monthly points be added if not used?

A. Yes! Your Paragon Points will add up, and there’s no cap, so you can save them for as long as you want and build up points to purchase items in the Paragon Market!

Q. Since Galaxy is dead… Where is the respect guy located now???

A. Jack Wolfe is in City Hall, in Atlas Park

Q. Was hoping for slightly less vague than that . Will there be alt animations for the new Time Manipulation set? I have noticed several people lamenting the lack of clock graphics. Which I think would work well with some character concept too.

A. When the effects for Time Manipulation were being designed, it was ruled out that clock imagery would be used as it was too obvious, and a very specific iconography. Instead, Time Manipulation is a representation of what “time” might look like; clockwise, counter-clockwise swirls, portals, and motion-lines.

Q. If you have a character that is an Incarnate, but you choose not to pay for Freedom, will they lose their Incarnate powers?

A. If you drop down to a Premium player, your Incarnate powers will be grayed out. You won’t lose them, but you will not be able to access them until you become a VIP again.

Q. For the Beta testing: Will there be a phase where we can test being a free player and another phase where we can test being a premium? Or provide a way to switch between them to test each of those levels?

A. We’ll have more information about that at a later time

Q. Hints about booster pack cots in the Paragon Market?

A. None yet, however it should be noted that any prices you see ANY item in the beta right now are subject to change.

Q. Regarding NPC costume powers purchasable in the store, will any of the Costume codes from the Meet and Greets/Conventions be available or will they remain exclusives?

A. Costume codes WILL be available in the Paragon Market! If there’s a costume power you weren’t able to get at a convention, you’ll eventually be able to purchase it in the Paragon Market.

Q. Will there be new power sets?

A. Yes, there will be new power sets! If you’re a current subscriber, you can test out some of these new power sets in the VIP beta, including Time Manipulation and Beam Rifle

Q. If I am on the beta server, and I spend points, are those points spent when I get back to the regular server, are those points still spent?

A. Everyone gets 10,000 Paragon Points to play around with; these do not affect the number of points you will have when Freedom goes live. The amount of points players will have when Freedom goes live depends on their subscription; since July, subscribed players have been receiving 400 paragon points per month.

Q. I saw someone wrote that Galaxy is getting nuked? What a bummer. I loved that zone. Always felt it was the place for the grittier Heroes to start from. At any regard, I’m curious if we’ll ever see alternate movement powers available? I saw pics of some recoloration of movement powers on the Freedom site. I’m wondering if we might ever see something like an ‘Earth Dive’ or ‘Earth Swim’ power, that way an Earth tank or controller could have something halfway decent or appropriate to match their powerset. I never did like being pigeonholed into Teleportation. Also, might we ever see an Aquatic power set? Perhaps something like fitness that would involve actual swimming in game? (Would love an underwater zone) Maybe more water powers too.

A. Galaxy City is the site of the new player tutorial “Galaxy’s Last Stand.” Where you’ll see Galaxy City come under attack from the Shivan race. Meteors will rain down, smashing into buildings, while Shivan Invaders roam the streets attacking hero and villain alike. Galaxy City, as a zone, will be gone, but it’s going to be the site of an awesome introduction to City of Heroes.

Q. So will time manipulation, street justice, and beam rifle be ready when CoH Freedom launches, or will they be held back for a later date?

A. Time Manipulation and Beam Rifle will be available at launch. Street Justice will follow shortly after.

Q. Wait, wait… so, free players can’t get into a SG base, even if they’re a part of said SG?

A. Free players cannot join SGs, only premium and VIP players.

Q. Will VIP have to buy power sets?

A. There will be certain purchasable power sets that will only be available through the Paragon Market, for all players.

Q. I think the q&a is done they might do another session

A. There’s still 13 minutes by my clock

Q. For those of us returning Premium players, will our Super Groups we ahd still be there????? I am curious because we had a very large base and want to know if our stuff will still be there when Freedom launches or do we have to start all over again. If not I’m thinking I need to resub to get our stuff out of the base.

A. I do apologize that an answer took so long. Regarding base access in SGs, if you are in a SG, you will have base access. As mentioned by Kurtis Black, SG access is a tier 2 reward, so many premium players will have access to it.

Q. For the premium downgrade will you be able to move characters into the available slots or are you stuck with the ones at the top of the list?

A. You will be able to choose which characters to place with your Global character slot tokens.

A. Addendum to that: so long as you have access to those character ATs, as some may be locked. But aside from that you will be able to choose which characters you’d like to keep with the number of Global slot tokens you have.

Q. Meanwhile, my question is… Rocket Board is the coolest thing I’ve seen in years. Can we get a motorcycle too?! Pleeeeease???

A. Rocket Board IS the coolest thing. Those of you who have access to the VIP beta, I suggest you check it out.

Q. Will there be a way for us to massively increase storage? I for one have never enjoyed item management as much as most players seem to. After one or two task forces I find myself having to ‘empty my bag’ and spend hours at the Exchange. I realize for some heroes this is their thing, but its not mine. So will there be some kind of microtransaction allowing us to bump up our inventory… just so we don’t have to make the Exchange run QUITE so often?

A. There are a lot of items in the Paragon Market that will allow you to increase different types of storage

CoH – And with that, part 1 of Freedom Friday is done! We’ll be taking a break and will be back at 1pm PDT! Thanks all!

There were a lot of good questions unanswered in the second round today, but one of the more interesting was this:

Quote:
You stated that you have to fill up an entire tier in order to move to the next one. To me, that seems to defeat the purpose of "picking and choosing" our rewards. Any chance that this will change before Freedom goes live, and if not can you give the reasoning behind this. Why do we have to fill up all the tiers in order to move on to the next?
I can grasp why we might need to fill up one tier to move to the next, but it does indeed defeat the "Freedom" part of that system. Perhaps only require a certain amount of each tier to move up?

Here's part 2 to today's (08-12-2011) Freedom Friday Q and A.

Q. What is Street Justice going to entale exactly

A. Street Justice is a melee set that is, as its name implies, more “street fighting” than “martial arts” There’s a lot of heavy hits and attacks in the set that have a bit of “oomph” to them, rather than the flowing movements of martial arts or kinetic melee.

Q. I thought we were going to be able to pick and chose our Paragon Rewards. Do we have to fill up an entire Tier before we can move onto the next Tier?

A. You will be able to choose which rewards in a specific tier you get first., however to advance to the next tier you will eventually have to fill all the slots. For example, at Tier 3 I could decide to pick Greek chest emblems first before Shirts and Kilts, but eventually I’d have to take all of those to move up to tier 4.

Q. HOW DO I GET THE BETA SERVER!!!!!????

A. The VIP beta is open to all current subscribers. If you’re subscribed to City of Heroes, you can access the beta through these instructions: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=267978

Q. I’m very tempted to join the VIP beta, so two questions. As a late comer will I get the 10000pp to spend? And will this beta continue until Freedom is released?

A. If you were to subscribe today, you would need to make a duplicate account on the beta server, and send us the account name. You would then be in beta as a Free player. However you would not receive the 10,000 Paragon Points.

Q. When does it go live?

A. As Chris Fenwick said, later this year

Q. [Could not find the question]

A. All prices in beta are subject to change

Q. Power Proliferation coming up?

A. Yes, Powerset Proliferation 3.0 is coming with City of Heroes Freedom!

Q. I thought we weren’t supposed to lose anything we’ve already purchased. Incarnate access was tied to buying Going Rogue. But, it seems that we will lose those powers if we drop to premium. Can we get clarification?

A. Incarnate content is VIP only. If you drop to Premium, you will not ‘lose’ those powers. They will be grayed out and inaccessible until you become a VIP again, however these powers will never be ‘lost’ to you; they will never go away.

Q. Is there a possibility that when you buy already have something off the store that it can get/be greyed out or give you a prompt that you already have that item? Tried it out by buying a costume piece I already have from a perk pack and it used my points as if I didn’t have the piece.

A. This is a known issue in the beta and we are working on it. It is intended that if you purchase something in the Paragon Market that is a one-time purchase, such as an account-wide access for something, you will not be able to purchase it again.

Q. Will we be able to go beyond the current maximum of 36 characters per server as exists now?

A. As Eyal Teler mentioned, VIPs will be able to purchase up to 48 slots per server

Q. How do I shot web?

A. I dunno lol

Q. Will Mercy Island change? Will it get more contacts and/or missions?

A. Mercy Island has changed a bit. You no longer start off in Fort Darwin, because you will find that Longbow has taken over. One of the thigns you’ll be tasked with doing is taking back Fort Darwin from Longbow.

Q. I always thought the opener villain mishes were kinda lame. Glad to see they are getting a shake ‘n’ bake

A. More shake, less snake.

Q. Will the referral / re-referral programs continue after Freedom launches?

A. There will be more information about the Refer a Friend program in the coming weeks.

Q. Has there been a date range for i21 to be released?

A. Later this year.

Q. What about all the pack and GR I just bought b4 freedum came about? Do I get points for that or is it just a way for COX to make money by leeting ppl still buy this stuff even tho u will b able to buy it n gfame now?

A. You do not receive Paragon Points for purchasing booster packs and Going Rogue. Since July, subscribers have been receiving 400 Paragon Points per month of subscriptions. Purchasing the booster packs and Going Rogue will grant you access to that content.

Q. Can you get use the Paragon Points to get the booster packs like magic, ninja, etc?

A. Yes, you will be able to use the Paragon Points to purchase bundles of items. However, if you want to get EVERYTHING in a booster pack, my suggestion would be to purchase it before the launch of City of Heroes Freedom. After City of Heroes Freedom, however, if you only want one or two things from each booster you can choose to buy those items standalone.

Q. What you bought before you’ll keep. I agree that since VIP’s get GR content for free it’s a bit of a waste of money if you bought it just recently and intend to say a VIP, but it’s not that different than paying for CoV for example, which players got for free for years.

A. If your purchased Going Rogue before CoH Freedom’s launch you’ll get two additional Global Character Slot tokens that VIP players who did not purchase Going Rogue will not receive.

Q. That lame if your a monthly subscriber you won’t be able to use incarnets, people worked hard for those shards and theards!!!

A. If you’re a monthly subscriber you will be able to use Incarnate abilities. It’s VIP-only content; monthly subscribers are VIP players. They have access. Premium and Free do not.

Q. Well unless I’m wrong but if you aren’t VIP you will not be able to access your incarnet powers ???

A. That’s correct. Incarnate abilities are VIP only

Q. How many characters will Premium players have access to?

A. It depends. As a Premium player, you’ll get two Global Character Slot Tokens to begin with. You’ll then receive 1 additional GSC Token per year you were subscribed—for example, if you were previously subscribed for 3 years, you’d have 3 additional Tokens. If you purchased Going Rogue, you’ll have 2 Tokens. Finally, any character slots that you have purchased, you keep.

Q. So as bits of boosters go do you gotta buy each individual piece (ie boots or wings or bustier) separately or is it in chunks like costume, aura, emotes.

A. You can buy individual pieces, but there will also be bundles.

Q. If you paid your yearly subscription are you VIP?

A. To clarify, VIP players are players who subscribe. VIP players are the players who pay a monthly fee. Premium and Free players do not pay a monthly fee.

Q. Will there be a BIG price differential on that breakdown?

A. Right now, all prices are subject to change, but to give you an idea of target prices, a single costume piece might cost you 20 Paragon Points. A bundle of costume pieces might cost you 400 paragon points

Q. Will there be any effort to better explain or advertise that Freedom isn’t so much about letting current subscribing players stop paying, as it is letting people who have never experienced CoH before have a go at it now? Seems to be a breakdown in communication over that.

Q. I always got the impression that Freedom was about getting players whose subscriptions has lapsed for various reasons rejoin the game. I guess everyone has their own take.

A. City of Heroes Freedom is about choice. It’s about allowing players – current, returning, and new—to choose how they want to experience the game. That’s what Freedom is about.

Q. We love the Hover Board power in Freedom Beta. Are their plans for more travel powers in the market? Motorcycles, magic carpets, and flying brooms would be awesome.

A. There’s a thread on the City of Heroes forums, in the City Life section, about possible ideas for similar travel powers like the rocket board. You might want to check it out!

Q. Will a purchase history ever be implemented in the Paragon Market? Has the Paragon Market dev team even considered putting one in?

A. We plan to have that functionality, however details about it are not yet available.

Q. So Devs what about new base assets w/ Freedom?

A. We’re not discussing bases at this time

CoH – That about wraps it up for today’s Freedom Friday! Thanks to everyone for all the questions, and thanks to some of the community members for chiming in answers as well! Until next week, see you around, and subscribers don’t forget to check out the Beta Server!

I agree, maybe for the lower tiers the devs can place the 'Require the tier to be filled up' in order to move to the next one. However for the higher ones I don't see the reasoning for it other than a way to have a customer burn up a Paragon Reward Token. For the higher tiers have maybe 3 or 4 to be filled in and then move on to the next, or maybe make it a VIP reward. For higher tiers, VIPs do not have to fill the tier in. They can fill some of it up, and then move on to the next.

It doesn't defeat the whole choice angle cause you get to choose the order of your rewards pet tier

I strongly disagree with you. As far as I'm concerned having to fill up a tier in order to move on to the next truly defeats freedom of choice. If you gave me the option of picking rewards A, B, C, and D and tell me that I can't move on unless I pick all of them then there is no freedom of choice, at all. It was never there to begin with. I'm pretty much forced to take rewards A, B, C, and D in order to move on, period. Where's the freedom in that?

Sure there is if D is more useful than A

So what happens to the people who have no desire or need for reward D? They can't proceed to the next reward tier unless they take it? Congrats! the devs forced them to use a reward token they didn't want to use and saddled the people with a reward they didn't even want. It does not matter what order the rewards are taken. The fact of the matter is, There is no freedom if people have to take every option presented in order to move to the next level.

Then they dont use that reward.......Like they do now. Only now they can go directly to the good one in the tier where as now they had to wait months. Thats a choice. You see anytime you choose to do something you made a choice.

Wow, how benevolent of our devs to give us that option. I get to choose one or two rewards I might find useful right away and then when I want to move on to the next tier I have to saddle myself with worthless rewards, Thanks devs.

Not if you're forced to make that choice with no compromise. Which is what the dev team is doing with the Paragon Rewards system. Lack of compromise means lack of choice. Just because they "graced" us with the option to pick the order on how the tier is filled doesn't mean an actual choice is given.

Best thing about being a pessimist is that you're either constantly being proven right or being pleasantly surprised. Look we can discuss this back and forth till the end of time itself, but I'm not going to change my opinion on the issue of choice in the Paragon Reward system and I'm going to assume that you're not going to budge on it either.

I see what your saying but I don't agree with it, and it really doesn't change my opinion on the Paragon Reward system. If you want there's a Feedback forum in the Issue 21 Beta forums for the Paragon Rewards program. If you want we can go there and continue to hold our discussion there.
