Veteran badges and Freedom
This is what I hope they do:
Stop adding badges past 84 months. Let those of us who haven't been playing since release start catching up.
Separate the Vet Badges from the Vet Rewards. That is, keep awarding the badges automatically for time subscribed, and make the rewards that go with them purchasable with Paragon Points or Paragon Tokens or Paragon Radial Freem-and-Bacon Pie or whatever new currency they come up with. The Vet badges, in my mind, are badges you earn for being a loyal and subscribed customer for X months, let's keep it that way. I want the /auctionhouse vet reward, but I don't want a badge that says I've been playing for 84 months when I haven't been. I don't agree with buying badges unless they are and always have been badges specifically granted for buying something. Sell VIP? Heck yeah. Sell the 84-month vet badge to 60-month vets? No.

Really? What happened? Did you have a massive life-changing epiphany where you realised that you will almost certainly outlive CoH and one day, all of those badges will be gone as if they had never existed?
|
Well unfortunately, they are. They will sell anything and everything they can now to make money. That's the reason behind the F2P is to get people to spend money. Look at the other F2P games, they'd sell their mothers if they could...lol

Silver Gale, I didn't see your reply earlier but it turns out Beefcake hit my worries on the head. I just don't see badging as being fun if it becomes ,"I paid eleventy billion paragon points to get my badge total up."
WAY too early to be too worried about stuff like this.
They've said multiple times on the forums and in the U-Streams that much more info is coming specifically about the Paragon Market and the Paragon Rewards (which are two different things). They've also said they are going to great lengths to ensure that they don't remove anything for subscribing (VIP) players, and if anything want to ensure VIPs get more than they are now.
If I had to guess at this point, I would guess the badge itself and future badges will either continue to be rewarded just as they are now...you'll get a new badge when you log in for the first time past the date you're supposed to earn it. What'll change is instead of you specifically getting a respec, costume change, power, or something specific, you'll get some quantity of Paragon Reward Points (which are different from the Paragon Market Points) that you'll use to 'purchase' from various rewards, most likely what we have now through the vet rewards plus more. Like every month lets say you get 100 reward points. You'll go in to the reward point store and you'll have an option of a costume change token, or a respec, or a costume set, or the sands of mu power, or the nemesis staff, or a pet, or the TuT, or the Reveal power, and so on. You then pick the one (or more depending on the cost).
Maybe a slight variation where instead of automatically awarding a badge, the badge will become available at the reward store for little or zero cost and you pick up the ones you want.

I'm guessing buy purchasing points or earning reward tokens will be the currency for the vet badges. Not sure if it will be a package deal for the powers for each vet badge or you can just purchase the badge or the power, we'll have to wait and see how they work that out. As for other badges, I don't know if they will be able to be purchased with the 2 new currencies or not.

You will be able to accumulate Vet Rewards--or at the very least, something very similar--using Paragon Reward Tokens. You will automatically get some number per month with subscription, can gain more as a bonus for purchasing Paragon Points.
Q: What happens to my Veteran Rewards? Will I continue to earn new Veteran Rewards?
A: We are replacing the Veteran Rewards with the Paragon Rewards program, a rewards program superior in every way with Veteran Rewards, to add new rewards, features, and choices. The Paragon Reward program unlocks new exclusive rewards on top of the existing Veteran Rewards. All subscribers keep their Veteran Rewards and badges, even if they choose to play for free. We will have more information to share about that in the coming months. Q: What is the difference between a Reward Token and a Paragon Point? A: Reward Tokens can be redeemed to unlock free in-game benefits. They are earned as part of your monthly VIP player subscription or as a bonus for purchasing Paragon Points. Paragon Points can be used to purchase items through the new in-game Paragon Market. Q: Are there any incentives to maintaining my subscription or reactivating my subscription before City of Heroes Freedom launches? A: Current subscribers and former subscribers that reactivate their accounts earn 400 Paragon Points per month beginning July 1, 2011. Any active subscriber also earns Reward Tokens in our new Paragon Rewards program. Q: What additional content will VIP players get? A: A VIP player will enjoy the same benefits as a current City of Heroes subscriber and much more! In addition to the regular Issue content updates, VIP players will receive new monthly Signature Story Arcs as well as full access to Incarnate Trials and Going Rogue expansion content. VIP players have high priority status in any server queues, access to live in-game support, and one free server transfer per month. VIP players also receive 400 Paragon Points each month and earn exclusive rewards in the Paragon Rewards program. |

It's a matter of currencies. Beef keeps saying that you'll be able to purchase Vet Rewards with Paragon Points, which is incorrect, but...

All we know for sure is that you can't buy Veteran Badges (or any other badge) with Paragon Points.
(Personally, I hope the badges run up to 99 months and then stop, but that's just me.)

Not necessarily... Anyone can purchase the Vet Reward benefits using Paragon Reward Tokens, but there's no mention of the badges themselves. They might just continue to award every 3 months as a generic VIP perk.

Let me rephrase:
- We DO KNOW that you can buy Veteran PERKS with Paragon Reward Tokens.
- We DON'T KNOW if you can buy Veteran BADGES via any means.
Edit: Even the link you gave there doesn't say whether the badges will be purchaseable via Paragon Rewards. It just says they'll still be "around and attainable." That may mean you continue to get one for every 3 months as a VIP. It might mean you can buy them individually. They might un-number them, slap a big "PR" logo on them and have each badge go alongside a specific perk. We just don't know right now.

in yesterdays ustream chat it was very heavily mentioned that we will NOT be able to buy the badges and the badges will continue to be earned as normal
they are just not tying the rewards to the badges anymore and making the rewards more of a choice to what you want, so if you dont want samurai armor but want the vet powers like reveal you could pick and choose instead of waiting 5 years

I'm not personally upset about this either way, and I don't see why you would be either, Beef. I do feel bad for one friend who I'd really like to see up at the top of the badge list who happened to join the game 9 months in... but if the badges stop at 84 months, eventually everyone who's serious about badging will get there.

I never said I was upset about it.
But I guess we'll find out for sure when it goes live. All of this is all speculation until we get a for sure statement on all of it. I'm just guessing from what I've read that youcan, but I may be wrong. So we shall see.

Ok you are upset about having to spend free points to get the badges for free anyway. Doesn't make sense but ok.

At then end of this seven years the council changes their policy and decides to instead send out coupons every month to everyone in the city. You can use these coupons to get free meals, or you can use them to lower your taxes, up to a total of 2.8%. Now, the people who already have a 2.8% tax break can get the free meals, but newer residents have to decide between getting a tax break or getting a free meal.
All I'm saying is, if the new people want to use their coupons for free meals, let them still get the 0.1% tax break every three months like the older residents did.
Now, it sounds like the Vet rewards will be separate from the Paragon Points system, so this all might be moot.
(Sometimes, I wish there could be a Dev thumbs up button for quality posts, because you pretty much nailed it.) -- Ghost Falcon
And you get an option to spend your Paragon Reward Tokens on exactly what you want to use them on, whereas the vets who came before you all got shoehorned into what the developers wanted us to have. You're getting the better end of the deal here whether you see it or not.
|
I mean say what you will about some of the Vet Rewards, but they have all been useful to some extent.

That's ignoring the disparity of taxes versus the cost of a meal, of course.

Is the highest Veteran Reward that has been announced 82 months? I know the system is changing but I'm trying to see where they stopped announcing them.

As Veterans, we've already spent those Paragon Reward Tokens; we just didn't have the options you will.
It also appears you'll be able to effectively buy a 7-year vet status on a day one account, if you want to fork out the cash for it. Hell, I'm starting to feel like the one who's being penalized!
