So now I'm curious (CoH Freedom/f2p)

With the announcement of CoH Freedom (call it what you want, but it's f2p ), is anyone thinking of transferring to the "VIP only" server?

Obviously lots of things have not been mentioned yet like:

1.) Can we transfer the SG bases with us?
1a.) If not, at least the prestige?
2.) Can we transfer all our toons to the VIP only server (will there be more than 36 slots on it?)?

and etc....but...

I've always called Liberty my home and I'm sure most of the free players will be fine since they are basically glorified trial accounts (can't send /tells/form SGs/etc)....but....anyone thinking of either leaving (quitting for good) or transferring to the VIP only server?

In some ways I can see going to the VIP only server being 'fun' because there'd be more people there that know how to team/are fun to do so with. It may (or may not ) be like a closed beta where everyone "knows everyone" and likes that people follow directions/generally has fun. *shrugs*

Food for thought.

Liberty/protector will be my home. I do have plans on moving to VIP Server due to the prestige race(if not tansferable) for bragging rights. I can finally get Obsidian Ops 5 or 6 servers together on 1 server lol!

Well, I'm looking at it as a seriously extended free trial period for those that, for whatever reason, can't or won't pay.

The pay to play server fills me with a zillion questions which just can't get answered until it goes live.

I wonder if it's a "newer" server, with more power and resources that just might allow for a full league MSR without lag.

I don't think they'll allow us to transfer the base, but I suppose for a "VIP", anything is possible, such as the prestige transfer you mentioned.

I am also wondering how the populations of the servers will be impacted.

As for me, my sub just renewed for 6 months. I'll be able to take a peek and see if it's worth the money. I've already gone on record as saying that the game never needed any new content, the game was fine as it was. Maybe now, I can save 15 bucks a month and still have my fun. I have a hunch though, that I'll miss out on a host of badges if I don't keep paying.

If you go F2P, you won't be able to stay in any SGs, chat channels, AEs, limited content.

If you start off new, you are severely limited, but if you have been subbed you are considered premium and have a few more options than a new f2p

And that's why I'm very seriously considering starting a 3rd account before this starts to snag VIP status on it. I'm almost maxed out on slots now, but have been reluctant to start a new account due to the vet reward lag. However, it sounds like under the new setup I can purchase the rewards I want/use and catch up on the new account.

As to staying or going, I prefer small servers and the enjoy the folks playing here. I plan on staying on Liberty provided both those conditions remain. I'm guessing the new VIP server will turn out to be more Freedom-ish than Liberty-ish in size and flavor. I'm also hoping that Liberty's smaller server size will buffer it against the more unpleasant aspects of F2P.

That's actually a great point. There aren't a ton of things VIP gets that I feel I would need it on more than 1 account. Letting the subs run out on anything but my main seems perfectly feasible since they still would have access to things I would want.

Now, all I need is for them to define their definition of "limited" on some of the options.

Going to VIP server means you don't have to guess if someone is a free account and doesn't have access to the content you are doing and making a team for.

Might be a moot point for when TOR is released I'll be heading there anyways. =)

It's too early to say for sure, EI (at least for me). I don't know what the new VIP server will be like nor what the impact (if any) of the f2p people. It does sound like the devs went to great lengths to limit the ability of f2p's to grief, spam, generally annoy, but at the same time, as Canadian Stars mentions, what if you're on a team doing something that someone on the team can't do because they are f2p? It's a lot to absorb and sort through, but my first impulse here is to wait and see before I decide to move there wholesale (I'll definitely make and/or move at least one toon there, whatever happens).

Some excellent points. <sigh> I guess I'll have to re-sub my second account before it expires, just in case.

Actually you would drop to Premium, not free to play...and according to the Side-by-Side comparison, Premium can still be in SGs, and you can use paragon points to unlock the ability to use chat channels.

The whole reaction to having free players has been incredibly over-exaggerated, IMO. I've seen so many posts about people wanting a way to move everything to the VIP server, but why not just stay on the server you've always been on? If a few free players are enough to drive you away from your own server, you have some sensitivity issues. Plus Liberty has dealt with me for like 5 and a half years now...if you can do that, you can deal with a few free players.

I know I was one to somewhat over-react. I never got the chance to see what the f2p players/accounts would be able to do (or not do)....so, I think, for right now I'll definitely stay on Liberty. Maybe make a new toon on the VIP only server for fun but...*shrugs*

IDK it is so sounding like champions online. only with slightly better graphics. More when I get home from current work conference.

Meh, I will probably stay unless ******* abound. And with 4 accounts - all with vet reward slots still not filled, I am not worried about running out of slots anytime soon. Plus I have tried very hard to not make any new toons until all these bri....er other toons are 50. I am more concerned about what happends to the vet reward badges and what not. For example, Star will get 84 when I get 81. If they stop at 84 - I will never have it and that makes me sad. Plus Star will have it and I won't and that is simply unacceptable!

I'm wondering if the one server will be able to handle all the traffic.

I may take my mother's acct to Premium until she gets her character to 50. For myself, I will stay VIP.

I play LOTRO which has been FTP for about a year now. I posted here
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...=263583&page=7
about that, and am linking so I don't have to repeat myself too much. FTP has been a mixed bag from a player POV. My LOTRO kinship (SG) did not lock down recruiting to exclude FTP, but many did. We found many good FTP players, most of whom went VIP. From a management perspective the FTP is very good money, which can lead to more game development, but the game store model is so profit driven it can be very annoying to have it shoved down your throat and lead to anything good being obtainable only from the store.

I wouldn't go to any pre-20 zone the first week, or pre-30 the next, etc for all the influence in the game. Without pve zone level limits there won't be very many places safe to go, thank goodness for instance missions, tab editing, and getting the hell rid of that "Helper" tag. I'm dropping that from all my characters ASAP.

I'm planning on staying on Liberty. Liberty is my "home" server. I think people moving to the pay-only server are severely overreacting. Being able to pay a subscription doesn't automatically make you a nice person, and being a free-to-play player doesn't automatically make you a bad one. There are plenty of people who can pay a subscription who are jerks, too, after all. You just have to learn how to deal with them.

I agree. It's hilarious how many people on the forums seem to think that people playing the game for free are all automatically going to be terrible people intent on griefing (how? in local?). I've only talked to one trial player in the six months or so since I resubscribed, but he was actually pretty nice. Give them a chance before you judge them.

I have nothing against players (new/old) I don't like the model and I have been experiencing it in Champions Online. If I wasn't already a lifer in CO I would have left that game long ago. I don't like the model. If COH goes the same way CO, without lifetime sub, I doubt I will continue, we will see.

City of Heroes IMO is a community driven game, we are loyal in part to our servers just as much as we are to the game. Changing the business model of the game, may be a way to increase revenue, and F2p may be the new popular trend but in the long run is it going to truly benefit the players or the company.

Thats all I have to say except I wonder if W.O.W. is going to switch to F2p soon.

I, for one, will continue to play on the server that has been my home for the last 51+ months. This is where I essentially grew up, as far as characters go, and where a majority of the great people I consider my CoH family reside. I'll maintain my subscription, just so that I can finally say I'm a VIP somewhere, and may send a character to the VIP server, but a majority of my toons will stay here on Liberty, because as PW's signature says, "Give me Liberty, or give me debt!"

I'll be staying on Liberty, so to speak. It's my home server but I've got alts on almost every server but do plan on transfering a lvl 50 to the VIP server.

I'm looking forward to the f2p because during the times I play, most of the servers are so quiet and not much is going on and I'm hoping that'll be a thing of the past once City of Heroes Freedom is live.

Looking forward to the crowds of newbs.

F2P is not DOOOOOM!!!! It really isn't. Steele - I read your other post and quite franky I do not concur. Yes the store is shoved down your throat and I get 2-3 emails a week from LOTRO. But you do not have to buy anything and VIPs largely have enough points that they can purchase for quite a long while without ever having to buy points.

As far as the community. Yea there are always a few bad applies in the mix. You get a few that have the mentality of a 5 year old. Unfortunately, that is just how it goes. I know on my LOTRO server, I don't see any of the large problems that Steele sees. I reside on the 3rd largest server, people ask questions and people get answers. GLFF (closest thing to LB) can become a bit juvenile but unlike here, the GMs can smack you for ingame global chat problems.

The GMs are largely more aggessive in LOTRO than they ever were here.

As far as the F2P model that LOTRO uses, I think it actually fits better than what this game is trying to do which is alienate former players who are thinking of coming back. I whole-heartedly disagree with holding Controllers and MMs away from previous players with under 3 years. New players sure, but not to former players.

F2P is an odd time. Existing players are wondering how it is all going to work and if they are going to be bigger changes. From a revenue and development standpoint, if this works for CoH you are going to get more updates. This will be good.

Stand fast and don't alienate players because they are new or not paying. By going to a VIP server, you alienate them and show them that this game is more about badges than it is about community. There will be rough times ahead and there will be some getting used to. Just take it in stride and know that this will ultimately improve the quality of life hopefully. It did in LOTRO and the game has flourished since going F2P.
