The problem of not wanting to play other archetypes

Please tell me I'm not the only one who has this problem I've been playing the game on and off for 6 years and every time I come back, all I want to play are defenders/controllers/corruptors. Nothing else I make gets past level 10 before deletion.

Considering how much customization is available to me I almost feel guilty for not exploring more But I can't be the only one, can I?

Pfft, there are people here who only play one character. Period.

I'm not one of them. >.>

Roll the alts anyway. 10 is just too low to really tell anything about them. *shrug*

Yes, you are.

Naw just kidding. I have at least 1 of each AT, but my melee toons (scrapper/brute/tank) outnumber the rest 10 to 1 and are the only ones I play consistently.

Pretty common actually. I prefer scrappers and high damage toons, and I constantly make fun of my friend... not only does she only play controllers, she only plays controllers with two secondaries.

That said, I'm trying to branch out. I've found playing support can be a fun change once in a while. Even so, I prefer to be the hot dog, scrapperlocked insane person solo'ing their own group while the rest wonder where I am.

When I first made my warshade he was all I played for like 2 months.

I tend toward melee characters myself.

Out of my 6 50s, half of them are melee oriented, and all of them are offensively oriented.

I suck at the support role and I don't really enjoy it, so my one and only level 50 Defender is a Rad/Sonic. The rest are 2 scrappers, a brute, and 2 blasters. I prefer being in the offensive role, and leaving the defensive role to those who enjoy it or are better suited to it.

I'm far too frenetic when I play to watch what everyone else is doing like a hawk, like a good support player does. So I don't try to do something I'm not good at, and everyone on the team is much happier for it. I'm good at playing offensive characters, so I bring more to a team with one of them than a support character that I suck at playing.

What I do play:

  • Scrapper
  • Warshade (declared MFing by none other than The Man Himself!)
  • Tanker
  • Controller (2)
  • Peacebringer (Quad-form)
  • Defender (Empath, of all things)
  • Mastermind
  • Soldier of Arachnos (Huntsman)
What I will *NOT* play and have no interest in trying:
  • Blaster (which is ironic, given my Soldier is essentially a souped up AR/Dev)
  • Brute (again, ironic, since my first character is my MA/SR Scrapper)
What it really comes down to is the player's mentality and foibles. I've got a really good RL friend who is a Blaster at heart, who doesn't really "get" Controllers and (like you) can't take them all that far before abandoning them. I'm the flipside of the coin, where I like plenty of "manipulation" powers to shore up the "damage" powers on my characters ... to the point where my Scrapper and Tanker are both essentially Scranktrollers.

Everyone's got their niche they fit into ... and it's no shame to realize (and accept) what yours is.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

I can't really play Tankers or ranged damage characters. Well, I couldn't, until they proliferated Rad to Blasters... I've actually had good luck and a lot of fun on my Rad/Mind Blaster, since he can get in, hit hard and jump back out when using his secondary attacks.

Most of my characters are Scrappers, Brutes and Controllers. Similarly, my only 50s after over 7 years of play are 1 Scrapper, 1 Stalker and 3 Controllers.

I play everything . If its there I hit it! I can hate say a lousy Brute SR blaming other people ie say a empath defender for their own failings, because I have experienced the sets from both points of view I like to think I have more of an assured idea of who the real twit was.

I prefer brutes, corrupters, and scrappers personally. I don't mind tankers or stalkers. I don't particularly care for dominators or controllers. It is ok to have preferences when it comes to this game. I will say that it definitely helps to have leveled at least one of each AT to a high level so you can know what your team mates are generally capable of when teaming.

It reminds me of an Xmen comic with Rogue and Storm trying to save a ship full of sailors from doom blowing in on a crazy storm at sea. Rogue believed Storm should have been able to just "dissipate" the storm and save the day until she sampled her power and realized that it simply wasn't that easy. I believe knowing how each AT generally responds and what each can do will make you a well rounded player.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

I like to keep things simple, which means I play mostly melee, and sometimes blasters. I don't like playing healers or buffers (though I certainly appreciate having them around )... I wanna get in there and punch/zap the bad guys. I tried a peacebringer once, but the constant form-switching drove me nuts.

I'm leveling up a mastermind now, which isn't awful, but isn't great either. Solo, it's kind of dull, because you're just pointing and going "go get 'em". On a team, it's a hassle to keep your minions alive and upgraded while the rest of the team keeps steamrolling ahead.

Yes, it's hard to understand another AT until you've played 50 levels in their shoes.

It really helps to know what your character needs to do to help the team, and what synergies there are. For example, when you're playing a SS tanker one of your attacks has a hold built in. The tanker and controller can coordinate this to hold a problematic boss immediately. Some defenders think they need to clear mind everyone on the team, not realizing that melee characters don't need it 99.9% of the time.

The only characters I just have not been able to stand are Khelds. I've gotten one to 20 but deleted it. The other forms are just ugly and not customizable (I harbor a similar prejudice against stone tankers). I don't like the way the squid flies, I don't like switching forms constantly during play (I find it gimmicky), and a human-form isn't significantly different from a blaster or similar AT to make it worthwhile. And having only the human form seems to miss the entire point of being a Kheld.

The thing about playing different ATs is that they really do require a different mindset. I think blasters are the most radical. If you don't get into the blaster mindset you quickly wind up dead. But once you get it, you don't die any more frequently than another AT. Blasters who think dying is just part of being a blaster aren't doing it right.

I've played all ATs to 50 except the Kheldians, and out of all my 50's, over half is melee, and almost half of them are Scrappers.

Scrappers/Brutes/Stalkers are the only ones who feel comic book superhero worthy to me. Blasters faceplant to much, there really aren't Healing types in comics...ect...ect...

Nah. Not alone for sure.

Although I have managed to get a

~scrapper to 42 (Then took Shiriken by accident and now hate her. Also don't feel like running the respec trial, though this is purely my own fault)

~ a Night Widow (Jammed at 42 because I herofied her not realizing she would not get the epic pools. I have no desire to tip her back to evil and then run a respec trial to fix her)

~A Blaster I take out here and there.

~Defender Emp/Psi
~Controller Grav/FF

But I had to push myself to play em, because If I could play Controllers and Doms all the time Id prolly have a million of em.

I try to have at least one of everything even if one means a WS for Khelds, or Widow for SoA. I like the diversity each AT brings even if some ATs I like way more than others.

Defenders
Stalkers
Tanks
Masterminds

Hate 'em, don't play 'em.

It's normal. We all have our thing.

Be well, people of CoH.

EATs. That's it, just EATs. I've got a Peacebringer, Warshade, Widow, and Spider. They're all 50 and IO'd out. The characters I played to unlock them (Back when they became available at 50) are long gone. Every time I try to start a new toon all I can think is I could be playing my EATs right now.

So no, you're not weird. Matter of fact, I'd say it's much more common to have an affinity for certain ATs than to enjoy them all equally.

I've got every AT covered in my roster, but only 'cause I wanted to at least have one of each AT. I probably won't make another Tanker or Stalker, for example, but I'd heavily consider just filling the rest of my slots with Dominators.

But really, Scrappers/Brutes/Dominators are my thing I think, even though my main is a Tanker. We've all got our favorites.

I'm a controller player with 10 controllers sitting at 50 currently (more on their way). Controllers were my only AT for a couple years; I would roll another AT, but they would rarely survive until level 20. Recently, I've taken a few dominators to 50 and try exploring what looked like some of the more interesting AT's to me (HEATS, VEATS, masterminds, and stalkers).

See, while I don't argue with this... in some cases playing "an" example of an AT doesn't really do it. What if that AT were a defender - you'd have quite the different experience playing Traps versus Force Fields vs Empathy. Controllers are somewhat the same way too (not least because of secondary.)

... that's why you go for one of each powerset.

Joooiiiiinnnnn usssssss .... maaaake the aaalllllttttsssss....

See sig below...

I think I have one of every AT, but my Tankers and Khelds lag behind the rest.

But mostly, I Blast things (even when I'm playing Defenders and Controllers).

I have more melees than anything Including a lvl 50 scrapper which is my first character a lvl 41 DB/Fire which is a combo I had rolled up the 2nd it was available but my favorite character is easly my Bots/Traps. I dabbled with all other ats but if they take too long to come into their own like Controllers and Dominators than forget it. 2nd character ever is a lvl 48 blaster permantly parked there cause eff blasters and especially devices

Until I rolled a fire/traps corr, my highest blast set toon didnt even reach 30, and that through pling. Melee is where it is at. Hell, on my corr, srapperlock is a thing of beauty.
