Best sets for Witch-Magic?

I enjoy the construct of the Witch, and would like to create one. I have a good costume, but realized I don't know exactly what kind of powers being a Witch entails.

My first thought was Dark Blast/Dark Melee etc. But Energy, and Radiation both fit the "Generic Magic" look quite well also. The next thing I realized is I picture Witches knowing magic of many types, something hard to capture with the two-set system. For example I could be a Blaster and have Fire Blast/Electric Manipulation, but that doesn't add a lot of variety.

I actually even considered going the Dark Melee/Regeneration Scrapper route, coloring the Regen to look like black magic, but I find the punching unsatisfying to the concept; furthermore I normally play melee and this character offers me the perfect chance to explore the wide world of blasting (besides my experiences as a Squid).

I'm pretty much open to any AT, and I don't particular care about effectiveness as most stuff is balanced well enough to make it work. What sets scream WITCH! to you?

What about an Ice Blast/Electricity Manipulation Blaster? I colored the Ice Blast a violet color and Electricity Manipulation green like the Vanguard electric attacks. Blizzard and Lightning Field look especially awesome with those unnatural colors.

I'd say a Defender would work best, but I have a weakness for Defenders. Any sets work fine - Dark/, Rad/, Emp/ (for a "good witch" focused on helping spells rather than curses) or even Storm/ (the witches of Croatoa specialize in Storm Summoning, after all).

The best reflection of "diverse" magic would be to pair up two thematically different sets - Dark/Rad, or Rad/Energy, or Emp/Dark. Power customisation can then be used to give all the powers a similar feel. For variety, slot your attacks up in interesting ways (/Rad with Neutrino Bolt slotted for Acc/DefDebuff?) and color them various shades to reflect a variety of "spells".

I actually just thought of a fairly good story-based reason to make her Primary Fire Blast- This is progress because before I was just kinda floundering about.

Green lightning sounds hot. Maybe... Fire/Elec Blaster? Blaster secondaries are weird to me because they seem just really weak and lackluster. I think I don't understand them correctly. Would I get much use out of it? I don't want to be like, "I'm a witch! I know lots of magic!" and then ONLY EVER use Fire with the occasional lightning ring.

How would Fire/Storm Corrupter be do you think? Can you make the lightning cloud different colors? How about the Ice Storm? I don't have access to the game so I can't check myself but Storm sounds kinda neat too if I can make the nature look more, well, unnatural, as it would give me a wide variety of stuff.

EDIT to add response and avoid double post:

I never even considered coloring stuff all different, this opens up an even bigger window of choices!

Fire/Elec sounds like an awesome combination too. The way I had my character set up was Ice/Elec/Fire. She would cast ice spells, radiate lightning, and be protected by flames. An elemental caster.

Oh man I forgot entirely that the APPs even existed, probably because my highest level character is only 40 after all these years. Fire/Elec/Force maybe- I'd like to work in some non elemental stuff(and Personal Force Field is just a total baller of a power).

My 'witch' is also a Fire/Storm corruptor. Yes, you can color the different powers, like green tornadoes, purple hurricanes and what not. I personally kept most of my corr's powers more natural: an icy blue tornado, grayish/blue hurricane, blue/gray storm cloud and what not. Freezing rain, though, I colored a light purplish tint to simulate her powerful 'rain' manipulating ability with augmented magic effects.

For fire, I kept it all bright white. Rain of Fire (one of her rain manipulating abilities) looks quite beautiful, like a whole bunch of stars/comets falling from the sky and Blazing Bolt is a wonderfully flashy snipe. You can color them however, either all different or with a color scheme depending on what you want it to look like. Concept-wise, my corr isn't actually casting the fire but using bracers of HotFlame (something she stole from a former Hero) since she sealed her own lighting casting abilities (long story). This is why the flames are all the same color for her...

That's definitely a possibility too with lots of different powersets. I feel it kind of fit a different type of magic, mainly that of a 'pixie' type, so used that for my fey fairy character.

I say be creative and have fun

Just post back with whatever you choose to make. Pics would be wonderful.

I will post (maybe with pictures! though I'm self concious about my designs ;_ though it'll probably be a while (maybe not til tomorrow though I hope that's not the case) because of my.. current situation involving my gaming PC.

And just because I managed to use parenthesis twice in that last block of text, here is one more set ().

Well, the game already has witches ( Cabal ).

If you choose blaster, I'd go electric as primary, and anything but devices as secondary.

If you choose defender, Storm/Electric or Cold/Electric would be the closest to Cabal you could get.
Then again you could go corrupter and switch those around for a little more offense.

However, if I were to ignore the Cabal, I'd probably go Dark/Storm corrupter.

Wow I had no idea that faction even existed. I should probably go to Croatoa some time...

My original idea for the character was that she found an old old book that belonged to her ancestor who was a magic user, and she learned all about her life and how to use magic from it. When it abruptly ends, she does some research and finds that her great-great-great(not sure how many I require) grandmother was burned at the stake as a witch after only ever having used her powers for good.

Following this revelation she decides to try to use her powers for good... only as she's inexperienced, she burns down a building (we've all seen how well those fire alarms are handled in Steel Canyon after all) accidentally killing the people inside. She is detained and sent to the Zig as she fled the scene in terror, and then City of Villains starts. She uses fire magic to burn her enemies in retribution for the wrongdoings suffered by both herself and her ancestor she feels kinship with.

That was the plan anyway, but I could obviously modify it to suit a heroic origin. I have no idea on Praetoria's background so I'm avoiding that business altogether. I will probably make her go hero later on, as there is the obvious logical fallacy here that said ancestor wouldn't be happy with her using her powers for evil.

Wow, typing it all out and having to logically fill in the gaps really helped clear my mind. I definitely want to go Corruptor now. I'd also like to emphasize the inherent evilness of her magic so maybe Fire/Dark? Or Fire/Pain... I like pain thematically because it has the capacity for good but with a twisted angle. Yeah, definitely Fire/Pain.

Thanks a lot everyone I will post pictures and such when I can.

I think Dominators actually works best for "generic magic-user". Pick a control set, pick an assault set, go nuts with the colors.

Ebony, I'd also love to see what you come up with. I've attempted the Witch thing a few times, but I'm partial to male toons and it's been a little more of a challenge, lore wise. Do we even have warlocks in game or any lore reason why Cabal are all female (slight de-rail... sorry !).

Before we could recolor stuff, my "witch" characters used Rad/Rad (both a defender and a corruptor).

I also have a caster who is a Fire/Ice/Electric Blaster - she's more of an elemental caster than a witch, per se.

Finally, I also have a lowbie Illusion/Kinetics Controller.

I used Rad Emission and Kinetics to represent power than drains the target (Siphon Power, the Kinetics "heal", Rad Infection, etc.)

What kind of Witch you want?

If you want something like Scarlet Witch, with energy blast, buffs and debuffs, try a Rad/rad or Energy/rad corruptor.
If you bought the Origins pack, get the Runes aura on fists, same colour as blast and you will have a magic rune energy blast effect.
If you want something more elemental you have controllers and dominators with Plant control, fire assault, energy assault, storm summoning, etc...

I tend to use Controllers, Dominators or Defenders when recreating magicians, sorcerers and witches. My primary mage, Pagan Sorcereress, is a Plant/Storm controller. When she reaches level 41, she'll get a fireball, and I'll be quite happy with her.

Among my other magic users -- and I have several -- are mind/storm and illusion/empathy controllers, a pain/fire corruptor (recolored dark & blue), and a dark/electric defender.

This sounds like a great idea.

My personal vote would be Fire/Storm or maybe Dark Storm, and I'd lean Corruptor instead of Defender, but either would be just ducky.

My vote goes for a Storm/Dark defender

A trifecta of elemental powers could be done with a Dominator, say Earth/Ice/Fire/Electric Control paired up with Earth/Ice/Fire/Electric Assault. And for their post 40 powers, they can take Electric (Mu Mastery)/Ice/Fire/Dark (Soul Mastery) and you could even use water via Leviathan Mastery.

If you want someone that knows a wide range of "spells", I'd suggest a look at the Kinetics Buff/Debuff set. It does a wide range of things, with very little overlap on how it's done. Color them different colors, and it should work pretty well for spells.

OK. Witch sets. Here's my take:

Plant Control - Fantastic choice, my first thought for any witch character, especially a Good Witch. I tend to think of witches as being especially in tune with very ancient things, and "nature" is solidly in that category.
Storm Summoning - The Cabal uses this to great thematic effect. Like Plant Control, it's nature-oriented. This would be my second choice.
Demon Summoning or Necromancy - Obvious picks for Bad Witch characters. Pick and choose depending on whether you're leaning more toward devil's-bride-witch or voodoo-witch.
Any ranged Ice sets - Snow witches are cool and well established as an archetype in storytelling.
Mind Control - If your witch is an enchantress-type, go with this.
Empathy and Pain Domination - Witches are frequently healers. Do not mistake that for healz0r; I'm just saying that these sets are great for representing the idea and I know full well that these sets have even more strength in their buffs.
Dark Miasma or Radiation Emission - The debuffs in these sets work fantastically as hexes and curses.
Force Field - Magical wards are another thing witches often do.
Fire sets - For even more thematic goodness, color the flames pale blue-green to make them into foxfire like a real eccentric old woman who lives way out on the moors would summon.

As for what I definitely would not use -
-Mercenaries
-Thugs
-Robots
-Any primarily melee AT
-Guns
-Arrows (unless you're going for a Golden Compass-type witch)
-Traps or Devices
-The swords from the relevant Fire and Ice sets that contain them

And probably not use -
-Earth or Stone sets
-Sonic sets
-Psychic sets other than Mind Control
-Energy Blast or Radiation Blast (more wizardly than witchy)
-Thorns
-Kinetics, Illusions, or Gravity, though I'm not sure why not

Personally, if I had a witch character, I'd probably run Plant Control/Empathy for a mystical herbalist type.

I'd disagree here. I think a Mental Blast or Psionic Assault character would be a good way to represent a Granny Weatherwax style Discworld Witch.

I haven't read enough Discworld to make such a judgment.

I know it's a melee set but Kinetic Melee has attacks which almost look like casting spells.
Example from Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59kX4hrnAZI

Have it on a mage character of mine too.

Still hoping for a Kinetic Blast/Assault using a ranged version of the attacks but keeping the cast animations.
