  1. Sorry about not posting! Interesting stuff from everyone; that's why I made the thread in the first place, as I didn't know what most people conceptualized Witch-magic as.

I was pretty set on Fire/Pain when I posted that big blob of text on the previous page, but now my gusto for it is kinda gone because I remembered an Energy/Pain corr I made.. and I didn't much enjoy /Pain. So I'm kinda at a crossroads still.

Luckily(?), I got plenty of time to muse over it between having to work overtime and my desktop's GPU dying on me right after I resubscribed! I'm leaning towards an Elec/Mind Blaster at the moment now, having read up on the Croatian Witches. I'll have to redo the story a little but heck that's not a big deal.

When I get back online and going I'll post pictures of the finished product and what-have-you. Thanks everyone so far for making an interesting thread

Then again you could go corrupter and switch those around for a little more offense.
Wow I had no idea that faction even existed. I should probably go to Croatoa some time...

My original idea for the character was that she found an old old book that belonged to her ancestor who was a magic user, and she learned all about her life and how to use magic from it. When it abruptly ends, she does some research and finds that her great-great-great(not sure how many I require) grandmother was burned at the stake as a witch after only ever having used her powers for good.

Following this revelation she decides to try to use her powers for good... only as she's inexperienced, she burns down a building (we've all seen how well those fire alarms are handled in Steel Canyon after all) accidentally killing the people inside. She is detained and sent to the Zig as she fled the scene in terror, and then City of Villains starts. She uses fire magic to burn her enemies in retribution for the wrongdoings suffered by both herself and her ancestor she feels kinship with.

That was the plan anyway, but I could obviously modify it to suit a heroic origin. I have no idea on Praetoria's background so I'm avoiding that business altogether. I will probably make her go hero later on, as there is the obvious logical fallacy here that said ancestor wouldn't be happy with her using her powers for evil.

Wow, typing it all out and having to logically fill in the gaps really helped clear my mind. I definitely want to go Corruptor now. I'd also like to emphasize the inherent evilness of her magic so maybe Fire/Dark? Or Fire/Pain... I like pain thematically because it has the capacity for good but with a twisted angle. Yeah, definitely Fire/Pain.

Thanks a lot everyone I will post pictures and such when I can.

Freezing rain, though, I colored a light purplish tint to simulate her powerful 'rain' manipulating ability with augmented magic effects.

For fire, I kept it all bright white. Rain of Fire (one of her rain manipulating abilities) looks quite beautiful, like a whole bunch of stars/comets falling from the sky and Blazing Bolt is a wonderfully flashy snipe. You can color them however, either all different or with a color scheme depending on what you want it to look like. Concept-wise, my corr isn't actually casting the fire but using bracers of HotFlame (something she stole from a former Hero) since she sealed her own lighting casting abilities (long story). This is why the flames are all the same color for her...

That's definitely a possibility too with lots of different powersets. I feel it kind of fit a different type of magic, mainly that of a 'pixie' type, so used that for my fey fairy character.

I say be creative and have fun

Just post back with whatever you choose to make. Pics would be wonderful.
I will post (maybe with pictures! though I'm self concious about my designs ;_ though it'll probably be a while (maybe not til tomorrow though I hope that's not the case) because of my.. current situation involving my gaming PC.

And just because I managed to use parenthesis twice in that last block of text, here is one more set ().

Oh man I forgot entirely that the APPs even existed, probably because my highest level character is only 40 after all these years. Fire/Elec/Force maybe- I'd like to work in some non elemental stuff(and Personal Force Field is just a total baller of a power).

I actually just thought of a fairly good story-based reason to make her Primary Fire Blast- This is progress because before I was just kinda floundering about.

Green lightning sounds hot. Maybe... Fire/Elec Blaster? Blaster secondaries are weird to me because they seem just really weak and lackluster. I think I don't understand them correctly. Would I get much use out of it? I don't want to be like, "I'm a witch! I know lots of magic!" and then ONLY EVER use Fire with the occasional lightning ring.

How would Fire/Storm Corrupter be do you think? Can you make the lightning cloud different colors? How about the Ice Storm? I don't have access to the game so I can't check myself but Storm sounds kinda neat too if I can make the nature look more, well, unnatural, as it would give me a wide variety of stuff.

EDIT to add response and avoid double post:

The best reflection of "diverse" magic would be to pair up two thematically different sets - Dark/Rad, or Rad/Energy, or Emp/Dark. Power customisation can then be used to give all the powers a similar feel. For variety, slot your attacks up in interesting ways (/Rad with Neutrino Bolt slotted for Acc/DefDebuff?) and color them various shades to reflect a variety of "spells".
I never even considered coloring stuff all different, this opens up an even bigger window of choices!
  6. I enjoy the construct of the Witch, and would like to create one. I have a good costume, but realized I don't know exactly what kind of powers being a Witch entails.

My first thought was Dark Blast/Dark Melee etc. But Energy, and Radiation both fit the "Generic Magic" look quite well also. The next thing I realized is I picture Witches knowing magic of many types, something hard to capture with the two-set system. For example I could be a Blaster and have Fire Blast/Electric Manipulation, but that doesn't add a lot of variety.

I actually even considered going the Dark Melee/Regeneration Scrapper route, coloring the Regen to look like black magic, but I find the punching unsatisfying to the concept; furthermore I normally play melee and this character offers me the perfect chance to explore the wide world of blasting (besides my experiences as a Squid).

I'm pretty much open to any AT, and I don't particular care about effectiveness as most stuff is balanced well enough to make it work. What sets scream WITCH! to you?
  7. I feel like I should tell those who posted what I ended up doing. In the last several days this is what I've accomplished:

I have a Level 7 or so Trick Arrow/Assault Rifle Defender.
    I have a level 25 Warshade.
I have way too many hours on Marvel Vs Capcom 3.
I have what I imagine is a mediocre grade on an Anthropology quiz.
I'm four badges into Pokemon White.

I know I didn't respond to a lot of what was said, but I did read it all and appreciate it, even if I did kind of ignore it completely for whatever reason. Spring Break is in session now though and I'm going to make it happen with COH.
  8. Maybe increase the rewards on the old stuff but keep it deliberately below the new stuff?

The people who want to run the old stuff are probably going to anyway, so throwing them a bone can only be a good thing, but as long as it's below the standard I don't think your going to see people losing it and ignoring tips and the WSF. This solution isn't perfect but it'd alleviate the situation a bit at least.

My highest is a Dual Blades/Willpower Brute, at 40, abandoned on Triumph. Willpower is amazing for sure. The assorted melee is entirely Brutes and Scrappers. I actually have a level 26 Katana/SR Scrapper from long ago who just seems terrible, she runs dry of Endurance fast and tends to get blown up faster then I can Aid Self, and uses Divine Avalanche as a pretty severe crutch.

On a completely unrelated note, I just realized I've never played a Stalker, so that might be an interesting choice, though I've not heard a whole lot of positive comments about them...

I was actually looking at Fire/Dark as it seems like a pretty awesome combo for what I want based on what I'm seeing in Mids.
  10. I'm looking for a character whose strong at soloing from level 1 onward. I've got some cool characters I enjoy playing, but they don't do that well solo I've found and sometimes I don't feel like joining a team. I'm also looking for it to be strong from the start because quite simply, I get distracted or quit when I have to wait too long for key powers. My Controllers never do much because of this, for example.

I'm open to pretty much any Archetype, there's not really anything I dislike playing, having tried it all at least a bit. I have a number of Masterminds (all Ninjas, somehow) and an abundance of high level melee scattered throughout the servers though.
  11. Thanks for the help guys. It appears I'm not doing anything horribly wrong, so I'll just try to get on some teams and see how that goes.
  12. I made a Warshade recently just for giggles and found it to be fairly entertaining. I typically cannot stand Blaster-types due to the utter lack of survival, and usually play Masterminds, Brutes, etc because of that. With squid though I found it was entertaining enough to keep me going; besides, at 20, I get Dwarf and the good times start rolling right?

To make a long hover-blasting story short, I hit 20, got Dwarf and am now kind of scratching my head at the whole situation. Dwarf seems completely useless outside the double mire and some situational uses in groups. But that's not even what's driving me crazy.. it's that, while playing solo, I try to do all the amazing Warshade things I've read about in a certain MFing infamous guide, and I find that I pretty much just get blown up.

I super-speed and stealth over to a group, Mire, Dwarf, Mire, Squid and.... die. I understand that the true survivability is in Eclipse but I don't know if I can make it that far like this. I feel like all those many low level blasters I've thrown out! I'd like to enjoy my Warshade but I'm really not feeling it at the moment...

I'm currently 21, using DOs in all my slots. I can post a build if someone really wants to see it but I basically just took the imperative powers (forms, the hold, Hasten, Mire) and some useful tricks (Stealth+Super Speed, TP foe). I've thrown my slots exclusively into Nova's blasts and the 2 from 21 into Dwarf so I can 3 slot resists into at 22. I also have Stamina 3 slotted.

Oh oh, one other thing about Dwarf; It runs out of endurance in seconds!

That's about it, if anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with dying (I'm tired of +0 x1 no bosses ;_ or needs more information, please let me know!
  13. I've been following this thread with great interest as I want to make some kind of ultra-terrible character just to see how horrible it can be. This is the current winner, unless someone can persuade me otherwise:

    Trick Arrow/Assault Rifle Defender.

You got a terrible blast set with lots of knockback with a weak-as-far-as-debuff-sets-go-set that's generally localized in an area on an Archetype with terrible damage modifiers. Based on this thread and my own insight I think this might be the worst. AR on blaster with devices is pretty bad but the Blaster Dmg modifier and Defiance keep it from being too terrible.

There's also the aesthetics of this whole thing, pulling out the gun/bow constantly will look incredibly stupid, though I believe I remember reading a post by someone (Luminara's trick arrow guide maybe) that redraw is actually an urban legend and that its accounted for by the brief delays during animations.

At any rate, that's the current plan unless someones got a more compelling choice.
  14. Me and a friend recently got Going Rogue and back into the whole City-life again, and after a few different OO GUNS and OO KINETIC MELEES we're getting down to making our real characters. He decided on a Super Strength because of the new animation, and Invuln I think, Brute, and I made a Demons/Thermal Mastermind.

In practice I'm finding that I move far too slow to keep up with his amazing pace! Asking him to tone it down's lame too given Brute's inherent. As such, I'm in the market to switch to something more suitable. (As a totally unrelated aside, AMAZING WORK WITH THE MASTERMIND PETS, ONE BUFF FOR ALL AND THEY ZONE WITH ME !$*!@(*&!% I LOVE IT SO MUCH)

I've looked at a few different Defenders, and Empathy and Kinetic both stand out for obvious reasons. Something about Traps is appealing to me as well; it's so WEIRD for Defender and I like that. How is Traps/Sonic Defender?

The other thing I'm looking at is a Fire/Thermal Corr, it's convenient cause I can simply reuse my Demon/Thermal's concept.

I'm open to other ideas too, if anyone has experience duoing extensively with a Brute, I'm all ears. I've never played support to a very high level before, so this is all kinda new to me. Up til now I've just had solo Masterminds and Scrappers haha. We plan to join big parties now and then too, but the strength of the duo is a top priority for me.

AoE heavy? Does this mean you're going to be wanting to run Damage auras?

I never pick those up until after level 30, that's just me. I have to have a bunch of other issues at least partway under control before I start messing with those.

Endurance issues are a big problem in this game for a lot of us. For every person shouting "Oh having no endurance 'adds balance' and makes you appreciate the journey from 1 to 50 oh so much more!" you got at least one person grinning and bearing it for the time being.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I understand that no one (except perhaps Fire Blast people) are going to be doing much effective aoeing before 20 cause of endurance, I just meant in the grand scheme of things, I'd like to be good at it eventually. I keep ragequitting at about level 6 from running out of end and being forced to stand around doing nothing while I wait for it to return, because rest's cooldown is too long.

I actually have a Nin/Dark MM I got to 21 recently, and it's what prompted the comment about AOE. The Ninja's are completely ST based, and most of the game is simply how fast and efficiently you deal with groups of enemy minions/lts. Having impressive ST dmg isn't that great most of the time. A genin always seems to die each spawn, and now that the upgrade costs 50 end it's just a huge headache to constantly replace him....
  16. How in the world could logging out to char screen be a security hazard?
  17. I've been making a lot of characters, and I'm getting tired of running out of endurance constantly/missing/not having a real attack chain. What's a Villain that get's off the ground quick and doesn't feel terrible until 22 like most people? I'd prefer it to be an AOE heavy toon, as my characters up til now have been more ST minded.
  18. I didn't read the entire thread, but I'd like to chip in my opinion anyway. I just came back, and am having terrible endurance problems as a Katana/SR Scrapper. I know how to play the market, I know how the game mechanics work, you just run through END pretty quick if you chain attacks effectively. DO's from Architect Tickets help alot, but they aren't the end-all I'm afraid.

I like suggestion 1. Being out of END before Rest is back is depressing.

As an aside, who actually MANAGES END past 20-ish anyway? I know on my Brute I slotted stuff as I needed to make sure I could run all 4 of my toggles and do whatever I wanted attack wise, and would never have to think about END in the slightest. It feels like it's just tacked on to make low levels more aggravating.
