Game population

It has been many years since I last heard an estimate on subs for this game, and at the time I thought it was somewhere around 120k; I realize they never officially release any numbers but does anyone have a more recent estimate after Going Rogue came out?

Best guess: It's hovering somewhere between 100k and 140k. I remember the 120k estimate, and it seems like the servers are busier now than they were then.

I'm basing this on the average number of people online in the global channels I'm part of. Before GR the average was 80-100 in prime time, now it's more like 120-160 in prime time.

Pinnacle has had 2 dots of server load when logging in more frequently than I've ever seen it before. Now, granted, that isn't proof of more people being online, but it is one of the indicators. Server load is affected by the number of people doing things, and what exactly they are doing. What I DON'T know is how much strain the Incarnate Trials put on the server.

I thought the players estimates were hovering around 60-70k after the most recent release of financial information from NCSoft.

I never tend to place too much stock in estimates without any obvious direct evidence behind them - yes, you can make conjectures based off of the financial data but that is really all it is.

Based on subjective impression, I would agree that somewhere between 100K and 140K is most likely correct, but again I have no more hard factual basis for that than does anyone else.

Well I'm sure someone will pop into the thread eventually and post some homemade graph of some sort and proclaim it is proof the game is doomed.

Only slightly related, but I was surprised to find out 3500 is the max number on a server ever, and 2500 is considered exceptional. There must be a lot of subs playing causally.
Forum numbers look higher with 4700 browsing with 170k members as i type, though not spread between 12 servers.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Actually this is very germain to the topic. My friends who understand better than I do tell me that roughly 10% of a game's population can be expected to be on at any one time. If this is the case then at peak times when Virtue and Freedom are red (maybe 3000 players each?) and the other ten servers are yellow (about 1000 players each?) that's 16000 players. If the 1/10 numbers are accurate that puts the playerbase at around 160k or close to the estimates.

Remember that casual play is subjective. Some players can play for an hour a day or maybe 8-10 hours a week total. But when they DO play they're very intense. However I play 3-4 hours a day (until tomorrow when I go back to work) and I consider myself a casual player.

It kind of squares with some rules of thumb for server populations: At any time, there will be 10% of your total subscriber base online.

Let's say 2500 is considered a lot, and 1000 is considered about normal. 1000 x 12 servers = 12,000. That's 10% of 120k, which is around where most of the guesstimates are.

I've always been curious about the actual number of players/subscribers. I don't know why it is such a big secret but the NC Soft people do not want to let us in on the actual numbers (they really don't want to let us know much of what is going on behind the scenes but oh well).

I think there are more people playing now than in recent history but that's just based on observations. I think some people also report there are a few 'dead servers' (whatever that means). It'd be nice to get a real picture of player pop.

As long as they make updates to the game deos it really matter what the population is?

...of course. Some people take the second M in MMO and try to bury it in the backyard, but I'm not that anti-social. They won't make updates to the game anymore with hardly anyone playing it either.

Another thing commonly forgotten or glossed over: People try to say that 100k subscribers is low, because a certain 800lb gorilla has many times that number playing.

The truth is, 100k subscribers playing an MMO is a very healthy population, especially given the number of options MMO players have nowadays. Everquest at it's highest point had about 250k, and it still has at least 50k playing.

For a 7 year old game to be routinely hitting over 100k subscribers on a month to month basis is really good.

Especially when you consider co and particularily DC online should have wiped the floor with a substantial part of the coH player base.

But they haven't and now I don't think they ever will. So, more power to CoH.

I think a lot of people are listed as logged in to the forums while they are off doing something else. I have seen a number of people, who I know don't 'live' on the forums, showing as online for most of a day. Also, while I normally log out when done, I have been known to alt-tab to another application and forget I'm still logged in.

That game is doomed. Pity about all the physics, action combos and voice work. The rest is trash.

j/k

All I know is that more servers have been more consistently yellow than back when that 120k number was originally put out. Whether that is due to actual population or just what people are doing on the servers is unknown to me.

The converse to this: I used to stay logged in to the forums pretty much all the time, even if I wasn't at my computer.

I've since begun to browse invisibly. I know I can't be the only one.

They did give a highest concurrent figure quarterly, but stopped when it became the industry standard to not report on populations. The much-vaunted MMOGChart stopped updating with the same quarter that that change happened.

Kind of unrelated, but this thread jogged an idea into my little head. The server merge probably won't impact the number of subscriptions in the US, but it very well could entice more Europeans and non-NA folks to play since there will be more 'kids in the sandbox'.

Not only that but the EU player will finally be getting the same bang for their buck. I always felt they were getting shafted with only 4 servers to our 11.

This game has been doomed since before go-live in April 2004, and I suspect that it will be doomed for for at least a decade or two more to come.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
