Why not just more levels ?
I look at the incarnate stuff kind of like training for something. If my friend learns martial arts and I sit around playing video games, I don't get to suddenly become a black belt when he decides he doesn't want to be a martial artist anymore. If I want to be a black belt, I need to earn it myself. Incarnate abilities are the same way, if this character didn't do it, then this character doesn't get the benefit from someone else doing it either.
I solved that problem by not trying to Incarnate characters I'm not particularly attached to. I don't want to go to all that effort for a character I consider expendable. I have, currently, 2 characters that have made any appreciable progress on Incarnate abilities, and I'm trying to decide who's next. |
My only issue is now it seems that there is trial burnout where not nearly as many trials are being run as when it first released (understandable, and not a complaint at all).
Unfortunately, as I have limited playtime, and that is rarely at peak times, that could easily mean a half hour wait in Pocket D trying to get on a trial. Considering often that is about half of the playtime I can dedicate to a day, waiting around is not fun.
I really wish the LfL system could pull you out of instances. I understand if you are on a TF, or Ouro, Or in AE that it shouldnt be an option probably souldnt work in pvp zones either, but why cant you get a popup asking you while you are in a mish that a league is about ready, do you want to join it like you requested, or skip it because you are now focused on something else. It may even get people to actually use the turnstile system.
I dont know if anyone else has noted, but murphy's law states that as soon as you step 10 feet in a mish, a league will advertise.*
*In before someone suggests I should enter a mish as soon as I login.
Umm, gonna have to say no to this.

Unless you want them to just raise the level cap by 1 every issue, which one do you think it funner? Raise level cap or a new incarnate power every issue?
I for one think gaining the ability to punch stuff so hard it explodes is funner than getting hand clap as a set mule.
They have also said that iPowers ARE NOT ending with omega.

Im pretty sure posi has mentioned multiple times he does not want everything to come out at once. So rather than just raising the level cap by 10 they are instead introducing incarnate powers. So there is always something to look forward to, and the game keeps getting bigger and our toons more powerful.

It would require a revamp of most game systems and most enemy groups and - here's the important part - IT WOULD GIVE NO BENEFIT. Raising the level cap serves no inherent purpose. Raise it to 60, people rush to 60 and start complaining again. Raise it to 70 and the same happens. Much better to stop at a specific number, never raise it, and head off all that stupidity.

For what it's worth the Devs have said they are planning to give us more Incarnate trials on a very regular basis, like a new one every Issue type basis. Don't be blinded by the idea of "only" having two to do right now - the Devs have always planned for much more content in this area.
Also it ought to be amazingly obvious to everyone how much of the game would have to be reworked to actually allow for a "general level cap" increase. For starters all of the critters, powers and enhancements would have to scaled up to account for levels beyond 54. At this point it'd probably be easier for our Devs to give us CoH2 than it would be to re-engineer this game for a level cap increase. Besides the whole idea of an "increase in a level number equating to more content to do" is a completely old-fashioned way for MMOs to operate anyway. I'm actually glad the Devs of this game came up with an alternative to that tired old trick games have been using for decades. |

Every other MMO is not City of Heroes. By design it is not. Raising the cap makes it a grind-fest to hit the next cap. Older content becomes obsolete and abandoned. In my personal experience folks can't wait to get to 50. Raise it to 60? It will be chewed through in a week--maybe a few days. It's an ***-load of work for something that will hardly matter in the long run. Their energy is best spent adding more worthwhile(and by this I mean fun) content.

How is this different from what we have now ?
I sat around playing video games.
My friend practiced martial arts for years.
I don't get to automatically gain his skill when he decides not to practice martial arts anymore. If I want that same level of skill, I will have to spend the same amount of time learning it for myself.
Incarnate abilities are the same way. If one character doesn't do the content to unlock them, they don't get to have those abilities magically passed to them when a different character is deleted or no longer played.
It is one of the few things in the game where it makes perfect sense for each character to have to do it individually.

Agreed.. while it seems simple to just say "Lets just add ten levels and let them go to 60." The game isn't geared for it and it would take ?? who knows how long to create critters to give a 60 level a good fight. Considering the design of the rest of the game it might even require 2 whole new zones.. one blue and one red side with 53-62 level villans, a whole new set of contacts, new story arcs and quite possible even new enemy groups to battle or at least new factions of older groups. Then we get into is 60 level enough? I picked it sort of assuming we'd gain one of the current incarnate powers every other level BUT realistically the rate beyon 32 in one power every 3 levels so 1 at 49 (that we have now) a 2nd at 52, 3rd at 55, and so on... using that scale we'd get the Omega power at level 79. Now we seriously need a new zone and potentially new enemies.. No way the current 50 levels survive long roaming a zone with 80+ level villains. So now we are talking between 10 and 30 new level , new zones new enemies and .. what NO Task Forces or Strike Forces through 30 levels of play???
See just like Lothic said they's be better off introducing COH2 with features like that built in than trying to add that much new content now to what we have.

Stopping at 50 has nothing to do with laziness. This game is designed differently from other MMO's. Frankly, the idea of increasing the level cap in this game well and truly BLOWS. Seriously, the idea is so bad and so stupid that it doesn't even merit consideration.

I have to admit as a seven year vet the "Trials" seem to be a bit of a sticking point for me. The Devs in the past have tried to make farming such a non issue as to lower xp and other rewards in farming missions that some players quit the game. Now, they are not only encouraging it, they are creating content for that express purpose. I hate the trials. Yes, I know I can still "level up" during regular game play, but in all honesty the only "level" I get is for the Alpha slot, the other two "levels" are for trials only.
The Trial system is a nice system in and of itself. But the farming a couple of or even a few or several of the same mission over and over and on and on and on and on is just boring. Where is the challenge? I love the TF/SF of the week concept, but seriously, it is time to give tons more content and a few new zones for level 50s.
As for giving us more levels, I want that and I want it now. What can I say, I'm greedy. I want my levels to count no matter what I'm doing and the best way to accomplish that is to create more high level zone and content aimed at the players who have reached max level. (Please note, I think we need more 1-25 content too.)
All in all City is still a great game but we really need either a change in the thinking of the Devs away from this current "Trial" concept to full on raising the level cap and creating new content for those players who have multiple level 50s and even servers full of 50s or they need to announce that City of Heroes II is in development. Yes, I know that announcing CoH II has its problems, but it will keep players excited for the brand and give us something to look forward too.

No thats just a cop out, people are worried about all their enhancements suddenly being invalidated. So what, it just gives you more reason to go with IOs instead. For the issue with HOs all the devs have to do is add a little bit of code that makes the bonus for HOs static, problem solved. They just add another tier of gear for those who want to get it while everyone else can just keep what they had.

* We have to have a new PvP zone just for 51-60.
* We have to have numerous new PvE zones just for 51-60 (one zone isn't going to cut it for all the new characters who suddenly have to gain another 10 levels).
* It would require an entire 10 levels worth of new story arcs and task forces just to keep people busy. If you added 10 levels and gave them less content than we have now at max level, you would actually be giving people at max level less to do which is the exact opposite of a good idea, and the opposite of what adding content is supposed to achieve.
* Suddenly, things like safeguards/mayhems, HOs, purple sets, the purple patch (it currently isn't set up to handle anything past +/- 50), mothership raids, incarnate trials, and badges have to be retailored with level 60 players in mind.
* All existing arch-villains, heroes, and high-end story arcs are no longer for max level players. Do you want to throw everything onto the same pile as random story arc #8675309 that nobody runs?
* All the high-end task forces are no longer high-end task forces. If you had to exemplar to run an ITF, would you?
It sounds like your solution is to just make all those things be for level 60s too. In which case, what is the point of adding more levels if it doesn't change anything? If the only point to adding more levels is to add exp grind and obtaining more powers, the incarnate system already does that. The only thing adding more physical levels would do is throw off the balance of the game and add tons more work than is necessary.
It's not about "laziness" in not wanting to have to add 5 new zones; dozens of story arcs; ten new task forces; update tons of existing arcs, task forces, and trials; fix tons of issues and bugs; rewrite everything; and retailor all existing high-level content and rewards. It's about how stupid it is to go do that when it's completely unnecessary and a waste of developer time to do so, when raising the level cap would achieve literally nothing.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Everything in the entire game is already set to peak at level 50. If you raise the cap to 60, suddenly:
* We have to have a new PvP zone just for 51-60. * We have to have numerous new PvE zones just for 51-60 (one zone isn't going to cut it for all the new characters who suddenly have to gain another 10 levels). * It would require an entire 10 levels worth of new story arcs and task forces just to keep people busy. If people are using IOs they are not going to suddenly just go red all of sudden. People keep forgetting this. As for as HOs are concerned they can just go back and make the bonus static as they should have done in the first place. As for as the arcs and stuff the same thing could be said about all the lower level content when the level cap was 40, they added more for 41-50. I do not see how thats any different. Its just going to take alot more of it. Moving developer resources to things like that instead of wasting time on the AE could easily fix this on the arcs issue. Lastly given how easy it is to make arcs in the AE and the devs have superior tools to that I do not see why we do not have way more missions being pumped out than we do now.
