Don't worry, we'll get a Haloween event out of this for sure.

Try looking at it this way... we get a Ustream Dev Chat at a reasonable hour instead?

Yeah, I know...

Nah, they had Halloween for that last big downtime, I'm betting on... Pocket D Chalet being opened.

uStream was lagging on Wednesday with 64 people in there, with the video stopping and starting and the chat window at several points bodysliding into the ethereal vapours. Dread to think what it'll be like with higher numbers and chat that moves faster than a weasel after peanut butter covered weasel lures.

Wow, some at Paragon Studio sure does like shafting Europeans. Why not hot fix at the regular mid day EU time downtime, and not slap bang in the middle of prime time on a Friday?

I was on it with them for the 600-odd person stream (that was at 3am UK Time) and it was pretty okay - the issue tends to be the PC in question, and what else is running on it.

I guess the streaming software is a real bandwidth/resource hog. Since they've planne dit in advance, hopefully they'll be taking all precautions reasonable to make it a smooth stream.

Or not

If we could wait for this maintenance we would. The fixes that are going in are actually very important fixes to several mapserver crash issues which we felt to be important enough to get to live before the weekend. Obviously the time slot isn't ideal for the EU Community, and we did everything we could to get it earlier in the day (ideal would have been during our normal maintenance window starting at 5 AM PDT).

I hope that folks will join us via UStream tomorrow evening (morning for us) as we pass the time with whatever member of the dev team happens to stop by (it's usually a mystery who's going to pop in on the Coffee Talks...sometimes it's Doc Aeon, sometimes War Witch, and sometimes Sexy Jay pokes his head over our wall).

Thanks!

The ones I do from my desktop usually run fairly smoothly, as long as I remember to shut down whatever resource hogs I'm running (so basically nothing that's Adobe Air ).

We actually took a look at the "official" UStream cast and will be forgoing the laptop next time. It's going to be interesting to see how it goes with the next one, but we'll manage something with a more robust machine.

It's a shame, I figured that the laptop would be able to handle it because it was a pretty beefy little beast.

The 600+ person one was awesome fun, and I'll hopefully be there tonight, digging for important answers again, like "is Ms Liberty homosexual?" (actually relevant to a story I have on the go).

And maybe I won't miss out on a freebie this time.

I made a sarcastic comment on the last thread where fixes/issues resulted in EU losing their primetime.

The comment was maybe we in the EU should get used to having our primetime taken away from us.

Is this going to be the case from now on and maybe could be worse when we merge servers?

Would just like to know, as obviously if this is the case then I will not be-able to continue subscribing due to work commitments.

Isn't any good paying for a service that is only available whilst I am at work.

Which is a fairly typical response from certain quarters. Of course, were the shoe on the other foot, said persons would be spitting bullets.

The EU servers are already located in the same datacentre in the US as the US servers. They were moved a few months ago, which is when they started putting downtime in our primetime.

It really is, IMO, unacceptable. When you run a game that has servers specifically for a different timezone, they you need to adjust your maintenance schedule for that servers to take that timezone into account. If you're not willing to do that, there is NO point in regional servers.

Maintenance windows was one of the primary reasons for the EU servers in the first place...

Well no, it's unlikely to get worse. We've had a unified downtimes ever since the EU offices shut down, more or less and this sort of thing is a rarity. This isn't something new happening due to the server farm merge or the upcoming list merge, it's been a reality for a couple of years now.

It's still a mighty pain in the nads mind, and whomever decided to post an Announcement about no downtime for maintenance yesterday is looking slightly silly today.

Hopefully the next issue won't be so bug ridden that it requires developers to do silly things like patch a server just before the time period when they aren't in the office for 2 days and there are the most people playing the game (ie on a Friday afternoon).

I think the rollback issue last week was a tester to see how mad the Eu would get if they lost their primetime.

We couldn't have gotten mad enough?

Also what's the betting odds for the servers not to comeback on at 10pm?

I think it is a more than a little cowardly that there are official discussion threads for the smug hey no normal maintenance this week posts but when you screw the Europeans out of their primetime playtime (again!), that you can't start an official discussion thread and take the heat.

I'm sure there are pressing reasons for it - no-one patches on a Friday without 'em but I think you could really start treating your European players with just a little bit more respect.

Has the time for this been changed? Because in game we've just had the

"[Admin] Attention! In 30 minutes, City of Heroes and City of Villains will go down for daily server maintenance. The "downtime" window is two hours long but maintenance may or may not take that entire time. We will have the game back up as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!"

If the Americans don't know, it's only HALF PAST FIVE, which means the downtime is from 6pm till ?

I guess you can't please everybody. I work lates all the time. 2pm till 10pm, which means I go home tonight, its pushing 10.30pm, then I gotta boot up the PC. Download a patch... that takes seconds being on 30 meg... but the real time consumption is then watching 3.6 gig patch itself.

So then by the time Im getting comfy, a lot of peeps to group with, are signing off. *sigh*

I need a better job.

A) Regional servers will be no more after summer, really. I'll be able to hop on Union as an NA subscriber whenever I want.

B) Anything involving a clientside patch (like this one did) must be done at the same time so that you don't have version mismatches on, say, Union because you patched up for Freedom.

Both of these only apply after the merge takes place.

Since it hasn't yet, what's your point?

A: We still have regional servers until after the summer, and should expect the service that implies.

B: We can't get on Freedom if we're patched for Union yet. So there can't be any version mismatches until after the summer.

Every time I bring up the treatment of non-US customers (generally the EU customers, since that's the group I'm a part of), I get shouted down by everyone else. I am sorely, sorely tempted to go "I told you so" at every available opportunity, but I'm just not that petty. The evidence is clear as day anyway.

And I got to play in my primetime in the end, so I'd hate to get into another argument where I'm told I'm the minority and should just like/lump it.

Your point is wrong, common auction server so versions have to match. Strictly if there are no changes to the AH code, they could update at different times, but they did that for a while and found it more trouble than it was worth.

I'm an EU player on the US servers, and if you think our treatment is bad, you should see what the Aussies put up with as regular weekly maint can impact their primetime.
