Issue 20 - Important Patch Info for XP Users

If you're still using XP service pack 2, time to ante-up and install SP3. I'm afraid that attempting to load CoH after the I20 path will result in the following error:

the procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernel32.dll

Sorry folks, but hey... SP3 came out 3 years ago, and SP2 went out support last July, so why are you still using it anyway?

Already upgraded to SP3 when it was on Test, but I just want to address the usual "lol why aren't you running the latest whatever lol why?" comment.

From my perspective, there's only two ways to look at the above :

- you're genuinely surprised people have different interests in life and might not care about computers as much as you do. If that is so, might be worth it to step outside and reconnect with the real world every once in a while.

- you're trying to act smart in one area you can claim expertise in. Bad news : stepping on people never made anybody taller.

Either way, the obvious answer to this question as to every other "why don't you upgrade" question is, as always : because it works. Many people couldn't care less if they haven't the latest omgwtfbbq feature. If you're truly trying to be helpful, being condescending at the same time never helps.

Or, to phrase it another way... Why do people always ask obnoxious, passive-aggressive questions when giving IT advice? ""

Hey, if you want to be a security risk to the rest of the internet, knock yerself out.

But if you want to play CoH, then update.

Back when I switched to SP3, my wireless receiver stopped working. I contacted Cisco and was told "We don't support SP3 for that, tough luck". When I groused about it elsewhere, people said "Why did you switch to SP3? That sucks and you should roll it back. SP3 is garbage". Not a single opinion was "Don't listen to them... upgrading to SP3 is the way to go!"

I've since gotten a new computer with Win7 and my old XP machine was eventually upgraded back to SP3 (and is directly wired to the router now) so it's a moot point from a CoH perspective but not everyone who isn't using SP3 is a lazy mouth-breather who can't be bothered to keep up.

I love how you guys keep making stuff up that I've apparently said.

I guess the old adage is true. People really WILL complain about anything, even when someone's offering helpful advice.

Or, you know, as you have to make a conscious choice not to install SP3 by disabling automatic updates (people subject to domain policies excepted) and you're creating a risk for not only yourself but others on the internet too by continuing to use something that is unsupported, unpatched and has been for almost a year, I think I'm entitled to be frustrated by people's unwillingness to update in order to get CoX working.

Who's unwilling to update in order to fix CoX???

just so you know, all of you saying 'why didn't you upgrade, are you nuts?' does nothing but frustrate those of us who either didn't or can't.

get off of your high horse. realize that if those of us using XP SP2 can't play or figure out a way to upgrade... we're gone, not because we want to be, but because we can't play anymore. you shouldn't be jerks to fellow players who help keep this game going.

I'm not being a jerk, though people seem to be getting that impression. I was just warning folks that you're going to need to update to SP3.

Excuse me for trying to help, sheesh.

Launch the game using:
Code:
-launcher -setlocale 1033 -auth 64.25.36.15
and you don't need the NCSoft Launcher (EU settings, setlocale & auth server may be different for US players), but I'm not sure if it'll help with the SP3 issues as I'm not sure if that's the launcher or a change to the game code (I have a feeling it's the latter).

my apologizes. i know that sometimes people need the simple, obvious answer first to clear out the simple solution, but its not always that simple you know.

i know i'm one of those people who may have issues with i20, especially because i have issues with installing SP3, i just haven't tried yet due to work.

now that we've got that out of the way, solutions and work arounds are great ways to make people like me less anxious and frustrated , besides the obvious answer.

People don't update to SP3 because SP2 is easily pirated. And that's that. The people who "won't" update come up with all sorts of fake reasons, but the only one is that they can't easily do so.

People will spend hundreds of dollars on video games they play for 8 hours and never touch again, ever, but these same people feel that since Microsoft is "evil" they don't have to pay for that.

And yes, if you stole the OS, everyone else very much does have the right to be "up on a high horse" about it. Microsoft's bent over backwards to let people buy their OS legally. If you plead enough poverty, they'll let you pay in monthly installments of as little as $9.95 a month, it reactivating each month you actually pay. You pay more than that for CoH.

You can't figure out a way to upgrade? It's easy.

Step 1: Turn on Automatic Updates
Step 2: Go somewhere for a few hours

Or they are people like my mother, who is convinced her computer is being hacked every time it tries to update and her friend (at the diner) told her she had to turn off all those evil updates, she read it in an email from a friend of a friend of a friend afterall.

/Stealth updates when visiting
//Scary enough its not even just an age thing I know younger people who do the same thing. The chain email said so after all.

Because the chances of getting an HONEST answer out of an angry luddite is greater than if you coddle them along. It's also FASTER. And when your time is in demand (and you're charging $100-200/hour) that's important.

Sit there for 45 minutes and let them spend the entire time spewing some elaborate, completely implausible lie about how "it just broke", or needle them with the questions you need to actually get the information you require to just fix them and hang up.

I mean, PERSONALLY, I have no problem having a single-day take-home of 9 years worth of CoH sub fees. But most of my clients require Depends when they see the bill.

Uhhh excuse me? I didn't steal my OS, and I don't update to SP3 cuz every time I do my drivers go bad on my laptop and I have to restore to SP2 just so my laptop is useable.

I'm hoping that they really do make a fix for this because otherwise I'm not going to be able to play.

Silly question - have you gone to the various manufacturers websites and gotten more current drivers before upgrading?

Unfortunately yes, and I'm not the only person who has had this problem it seems as I read through other posts on people not being able to run the game. Im going to bite the bullet and install SP3 again and pray that it doesn't cause any problems.

Shoulda sent this Laptop back on Day 1 when I had problems with it, but it was very expensive and for my business so I couldn't really waist time by sending it back

Folks,

Two things

1. We're currently investigating this issue.

2. Please refrain from posting instructions, advice or anecdotal comments regarding the pirating of software or digital licenses on these forums. As fellow software developers, we consider it a professional courtesy to not encourage or foster an environment where this type of activity is discussed.

Thanks

The machine I'm typing from right now is still running SP2. The reason it is doing so is because, at my work, we had to disable automatic updates because some of those updates (IE 7 and 8, for instance) broke vital web programs we have to work with, and I just never bothered to go and update it manually.

FFM, I'll believe you were trying to be helpful, but you might want to consider how you worded your post.

Apologies; I wasn't trying to advocate or provide advice regarding pirating XP, merely attempting to refute the argument that piracy was the reason for everyone still being on SP2
