However, I'm going to chime in as a SP2 user who is waiting to hear back about a possible hot fix. I am fully able to install SP3 if I choose. I never installed it in the first place because it was superfluous considering what my personal computer gets used for, and SP2 users still receive critical security updates (contrary to popular belief). The differences between SP2 and SP3 shouldn't be related to problems running MOST NEWER games, let alone an older game like City of Heroes. I will be upgrading to Windows 7 at some point, not SP3. SP3 is a piece of garbage that sometimes causes so many problems after installation that people are required to rollback or reinstall Windows XP entirely.

If you're still using XP service pack 2, time to ante-up and install SP3. I'm afraid that attempting to load CoH after the I20 path will result in the following error:
the procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernel32.dll Sorry folks, but hey... SP3 came out 3 years ago, and SP2 went out support last July, so why are you still using it anyway? |

As an IT professional I'd just like to take a moment to point out that Windows Xp SP3 is mostly a roll up of all security updates that came out between SP2 and SP3. There a few things that SP3 gives you that you won't have without it or arn't offered by an update. HD audio for one (can't count the number of times I had to go searching for the patch to allow HD Audio drivers to install because the manufacture didn't think they should include it in the driver install) and Office 2010 won't install if you don't have it ( gotta love Microsoft)
for those of you that have issues installing SP3 such as redering the computer unable to boot or blue screens during start up SP3 requires more current ACPI support from your motherboard, most often this can be resolved by a BIOS update. In some cases a motherboard may just be too old to support SP3 which is unfortunate but it does happen and the only fix is to buy a new computer. Something I know not everyone can afford.
I also recomend that you atleast do the latest High Priority updates offered on Windows Update. SP3 is a High Priority update. Most High priority updates fix security holes in your system. These plug holes many annoying and irritating viruses like to take advantage of.
Also I never recommend just updating the BIOS on a whim or because there is a new one for your motherboard available. You really should only do it if you are fixing an issue you are having with your system. If your not familiar with updating a BIOS you should take your computer to a professional and have them do it. Doing it incorrectly or if something goes wrong durring the update it will render your system unusable.
I can't stress this enough if you don't know what your doing take it to someone that does.

For some crazy reason (yes, I know why) they're continuing to support XP SP3 until 2014, but after that, no more XP support of any kind.

No, they don't. Microsoft may, on occasion, decide to backport critical fixes where it's trivial to do so, but they do not have any formal support for SP2 in any form and have not since July 2010. Unless you're one of the few enterprises willing to pay vast amounts of money for custom support contracts from Microsoft, your chances of having SP2 machines that are up-to-date and secure are effectively nill.
