What's your favorite form of 'support'?
Did you read the part about "what I currently play" and have played? I have zero direct experience w/Traps; by all means feel free to share yours.

In my experience, traps has everything.
Web Grenade: Single Target -recharge, -fly, immobilize
Caltrops: AoE -speed, -jump, DoT, crowd control patch
Triage Beacon: Team +regen
Acid Mortar: AoE repeating -def, -resist, DoT
Force Field Generator: Team +def and +status protection
Poison Gas Trap: Huge -regen, hold
Seeker Drones: AoE -tohit, -dmg, stun, damage
Trip Mine: Placeable AoE mini-nuke with knockback
Time Bomb: Well, at least you can pick an extra pool power.

To play as: Storm. No matter how much I goof off, no matter how many toggles I switch on or off because I'm bored of them, the enemies are screwed.
To play with: Kinetic. If I have to explain, get off the boards and go roll a Kin.
The kind of support many of my characters seem to like the most is +recovery. Sb is the obvious, RA and AM also do wonders. I seem to like to make End pigs. The cardiac alpha has done wonders for some of my people.
For the two characters I have that dont really need +recovery, that is, my stalker (elec/elec) and one of the two builds on my Kheld (Tri-PB), hmmmm, well the stalker anything that boosts his damage output, +dam + acc or debuffs on the mobs and anything that makes him tougher (which is mostly +def + regin). I suspect a bubbler could make my stalker nigh invulnerable. He does pretty good on his own buffs just make him better and better.
My Tri-PB is fairly self contained, cosmic balance gives him a lot on a big team. Last Apex he ran he got smacked out of the air like a bug a few times so +def +res (back to bubbles) would help him. +Recharge really helps his damage output, more so in dwarf then Nova, +recharge gets Photon Seekers up for the mini-boom and dawn strike up for the big boom more often as well.
My other build for the PB is still mostly SO's and needs a whole lot of +recovery work to be functional, I likely need to get his +def to melee over 30% as well. (at least for solo on a team the +res from cosmic balance usualy gets him to 85% res all)
My elec/elec Dom is also pretty self sufficient, he has less end issues the more mobs he is fighting. Being able to fill up the end bar by hitting Dominatrix mode helps too. His damage while not uber or awesome does well enough. Damage and stun procs in most of his abilities really round things out. I'd say the biggest help for him is -res -def on spawns like Storm and Rad can do (as well as some others). + acc for his sleep and sap fields is nice too. The more they hit the more chances they have to stun and damage as well.
After leveling my Grav/FF a little more, I would have to say Sigularity is support! Like WOW support. I force field it, teleprt it, run around with it, hug it, love it, and it does so much I can't even begin to explain exactly how my toons life has changed since she got it.
It eats aggro, keeps my teammates pretty safe, and I am beginning to think that FF is beyond capable of making a team unstoppable. I mean, I always under estimated the value of it, and that was my fault, because it really is a great tool.
I have always loved playing with other FF's but seriously, Grav/FF is so much control! (Others seem to think it's chaotic, and I don't know why. I have so far skipped many of the annoying powers people hate in gravity and FF and supplimented them with power pool powers.
Although I just recently played with an Illusion/TA and I have never seen so much Map Domination in my entire gaming experience. It was like watching a human, or in this case Illusion Cat Chick, Steam Rolling everything in her path, while we all just watched in shock and awe.
I just shutter to think how Earth/TA would play out. Although Ill/TA was just insane control and support.
I don't see traps on your list. I guess it's so awesome you didn't need to mention that it's better than all those other things.
|
The best thing about Traps is the stackability and the numbers on the debuffs, allowing you to totally dominate an area once you get set up.
The downside to Traps is the reduced mobility and maneuverability that comes with that.
The Melee Teaming Guide for Melee Mans
Traps is an very powerful set, but its certainly not better than all the other support sets. I would disagree with any assertion that a given support set is better than all the others because they all have their advantages and disadvantages.
|
I agree that no support set is hands down best. There are "best for X" or "best for Y" and even "best as long as not Z." Traps is easily my favorite, and I responded with a bit of hyperbole to the omission of Traps in a tiered list.
Chances are, whatever your team needs, traps can give it to you. It's not going to be as fast paced as Kinetics and Radiation, nor will it be as mobile as Cold Domination and FF for protection.

Bonus coolness points if you swing your camera around and toggle on Walk so you can see the explosion behind you while walking away like a badass
It's kind of an edge case, but it's a case where Time Bomb is actually useful.

I've got a DP/traps defender, but he can get Mass Hypnosis. The character's name is "Just That Good," so the action of walking away to some heavy metal with a spawn eradicating blast in the background fits all too well.

My favourite form of support to play is, oddly, my Plant/Emp controller. For me this is strange. Normally I love debuff sets and hate buff ones (I despise playing Kinetics for example) but I don't hate Empathy. In fact I really like it. Dark comes a close second with Storm and TA after that.
In terms of playing with I'd probably say Cold or Dark.
What is your favorite form of 'support' to play, and what is your favorite form of 'support' to play alongside?
|
I like to play along side support that does not require a baby sitter.
I prefer to play support that allows for an aggressive offense, so primarily debuffers & VEATs.
I've played everything but constant buffing is not something I enjoy a great deal, so sets that have no single-target buffs are ones I prefer. Dark for example. ^_^
I don't think of VEATs as true support toons per se, but I told my scrapper-heavy team last night that my night widow was a "support scrapper". Which is kind of true, not only for the defense and other toggles but also I have recall friend and the medicine pool (largely to give me a self heal, I'll admit -- but I took the rez as well.)
my lil RWZ Challenge vid
I love playing with any kind of support. I play alot of TF's so mostly I look for debuffs for the AV's. I'm mostly teaming with VG and alot of well built toons, so buffs seem less important.
I hate playing active buffers. I WILL FORGET TO BUFF YOU. Last night running ITF on my Fire/cold corr, we are on the last mission fighting Rommie and it hits me. I haven't given out an ice shield to anyone this entire TF! I was too busy debuffing and setting everything on fire. We were flying through it and completed in less than 25min, but the VG still got a nice kick out of it when I told them about my lapse.
So most of my support toons tend to be debuffers or ones that can pasively buff the team like my rad or veats (or a cold that apparently might as well have skipped his shields.)
Teaming i like a sonic on my def based toon or a cold on my res toons or squishies even .
Dark is my favorite to play, even though i would rather team with sonic, cold, rad, FFs...you get the idea.

@Caucasiafro
Unless your primary (or secondary for defenders) is Sonic, then you can have the ability to put a spawn to sleep and set a bomb....and then just walk away, knowing that the spawn will soon be no more.

Of the support sets, over time I've played Rad, Kin, Thermal, Sonic and Pain to 50, and Cold and Dark Corrs into their 30s. I like all of the 50s well enough, but lately I play the Son & Pain the most, Kin the least. I don't think there's much to that, just the way my prefernces lie right now. Someone mentioned the Rad trifecta (Veng/Fallout/Mutation) but in practice folks buzzkill that too often, popping the wakie before I can get the powers off.
FF and Emp are sets I loooooove having on the team, but can't abide playing myself (obviously YMMV).

Mostly Pinnacle, with scattered alts on Liberty, Freedom, and Justice.
I had a great time playing with you!
I never had the patience to get an Alarm Clock build up to level 39...
I've actually given this a lot of thought because of Midlevel Crisis: "What can I bring to the task force that everyone's going to want to see?"
1) Force field/sonic defender: I like defensive overkill. Sonic provides great damage enhancement to the entire team. Probably the best combo of foolproof protection and damage boost I know. I have an indefensible [sic] love for Force Fields- any level, any team, full protection, guaranteed.
2) Rad/Sonic defender. Similar, but with even MORE damage boost, nearly as much protection from tough targets, and the capability to enhance the team and dehance the enemies in a variety of ways. Has the "oh sh**" buttons that FF is totally lacking in.
3) Dark/Sonic defender. Has the protective overkill I so like, but occasionally suffers from enemies that resist the debuffs.
4) Sonic/Dark defender, with Maneuvers and the blasts slotted for debuff: This was kind of an experiment. It's the ultimate "+1" character. By itself it's hopelessly weak. But it makes any other buff, debuff, defense or resist set better. A _lot_ better. Useful for ANY large team.
As for what I like on my team? Any buffer that keeps the buffs up.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
i love playing Trick Arrow. I know what im supposed to do, and how im supposed to lay it all down. I find traps amazing, on an MM, where i know where the fight is gonna happen. on a team where everyone is running everywhere, and i have to guess just how far they're gonna run or just how many mobs they're gonna try to pull together, i find traps difficult to lay in the appropriate (im not a mind reader) spot.
To play I like Rad. -Regen and -Def are always useful. I have a Rad/Rad Defender who solos well and teams just love him for the AM, Mutation and Fallout he brings.
To play alongside it depends on what I'm running. My Tanks love Sonic for the shields, -Resist and Disruption Field. Brutes are the same but then I prefer Therm and Forge. Blasters love anything like Clarity or Clear Mind and -Def or -Resist on the enemy. My Controllers and Doms like the same thing as the Blasters but soft controls like Stuns are always good too.
Some of it is mood. Bubbles are nice but seeing them ALL THE TIME gets old. Variety is the spice of battle...
"Comics, you're not a Mastermind...you're an Overlord!"
My FRad controller is great.
For defenders I am actually really getting into a very young Emp/Pistols right now. I tend to attack first and ask questions later but can fall back into a more active "healing" mode when the team needs it ("oops, accidentally brought three groups along with me!" times).
