Flying during Apex

Specifically, Battle Maiden:
I've done two Apex TFs in the last two days with my Fortunata, who I generally play hover-blast style. In both, I've pretty much stuck to that. At the end of the one I did today, someone mentioned that the blue patches would harm the people on the ground underneath, even if they were in the air.

On the flip side, when I've flown underneath them, they didn't harm me, and heck, it seems like when they -Fly me, by the time I'm on the ground, they're not hurting me (handy for survival, really...).

So can someone confirm where, and when the nanite swords inflict their massive damage? And how they're supposed to do it, if they're buggy at the moment? Because a little clarification would help either clear my conscience, or at least keep me from causing invisible death to rain onto my team.

Depends on how high you are - at some heights the patch can still hurt those on the ground, and depending on how they have their camera set up, it can be difficult to see, or judge the edge of.

Although, as usual, cautionary tales turn into "Omg, turn off fly before u cause immediate team wipe!!!11!1!"

"My inner mind has become a reality-cracking overgod. He torments me! Help!"

The blue patches of death are actually spheres. Which means that, yes, if you fly at the right height the sphere can reach the ground, or a player can jump into them. But if your flying high enough then it should be now worry at all, and this is usually the case.

The blue patch is a sphere. If you stay more than the patch's width above the ground, the rest of the team will be fine.

Cool, thanks guys. Guess I'll be making effective use out of those Range bonuses I have!

That's highly unlikely considering the mechanics of the game. All other effects are circular, spherical, or cylindrical... all based on a regular circle.

Well, the Sonic, Force Field and FF Generator Dispersion Bubbles look like Oblate Spheroids.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

As long as you stay ~20' or more off the ground the blue patch won't affect those on the ground... and as an added bonus the Swords have NO ranged attacks so they're a non-issue. That's something that's highly useful for a squishier character as those things hit HARD.

All my squishy toons fly in the Apex for that reason and I seldom have any issues. Yeah, if I'm stupid and don't dodge the blue I get hit... by the -fly and immediately drop out of the damage patch. As you've discovered you need to be alert to the forming blue patch and ready to move; once the warning forms you have ~8 seconds to get out of the way, more than enough even if you've been stunned and are suppressed.

Of course that may merely be a graphical effect with the actual area of effect being a true sphere...

I agree it's just a graphic. Evidence of this is having a toon with more that one size costume. Wear one that's 4ft tall, then switch to one that's 8ft tall. The Bubble graphic increases in size, but the actually AoE is not changed.

Looks can be deceiving.

You mean like this screenshot from a TV trial long ago

Get bubble as squid, swap to dwarf and tada, Kheldian wearing a nappy

It did however still protect from damage even though most of him was outside it.

p.s. I don't think this works anymore the bubble now resizes when you swap forms.

On the other hand, I noticed during a recent Apex that using Tesla Cage on a War Walker gives the giant robot an Electric Diaper.

I should have taken a screen shot.

This is going to end up being one of those "don't kill the pylons" things that's discussed to death but everyone still has their own idea of how to do it.

The only issue I've seen with fliers on Apex are with Superjumping toons (none of which are mine, as I don't use it). Flier spawns a blue patch above the jumper's range of vision and when the jumper jumps to avoid one patch, he moves right into another that he couldn't see.

Otherwise, if you stay high enough and dodge your own spawns, flight is damn handy on Apex.

Never argue with stupid people. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The key is fly high enough, the nice advantage is the -fly drops you out of them if you get hit.

But I have been killed by low-hovering allies who got blue flame dropped where I couldn't see it. =) So fly high dag nabbit!

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

This. I was on a two hour Apex yesterday with a team that pushed the limits of my resurrect recharge. A hover blaster stopped trying to fly (at 12 ft or so) because he kept dying anywise. I showed him that if you go higher, you get hit less and help the team. Sky-high bluestuff=less for the ground folks to worry about, and his ability to survive and keep shooting helped push the damage over the regen threshold to take battle maiden down.

Pretty sure that's just the graphic.

And as for the big bubble resizing based on charachter size, thought they had fixed that one.
