Kevin Costner Cast in Snyder's Superman
Sometimes you really have to wonder though. Tom Cruise seems to play nothing but Tom Cruise. Its easy to wonder if he used up all his acting skills in Risky Business. Sometimes he seems not to even be able to play Tom Cruise correctly. Then he shows up in Tropic Thunder.
Tom Hanks is probably the example everyone loves. He tends to play himself, sometimes loosely disguised. He is the everyman, and that's what he's good at playing, but well. George Clooney seems to do a good job playing variations of George Clooney, sometimes disguised much better than Tom Hanks. But then there's Russell Crowe. Who is apparently a dick, but plays a rather diverse set of characters, most of which are not nearly as dickish. And Matt Damon, who is definitely not playing the same character in the Bourne movies as he did in Courage Under Fire or The Talented Mr. Ripley. Although to my mind, the best character actors are the B-listers who seem to show up in movie after movie always playing different interesting parts. The late J.T. Walsh, for example. Chris Cooper. J.K. Simmons. Gary Oldman. Those guys. Everyone knows them, even if not everyone can remember their names. Hardly a bad performance among the lot of them. |
Harrison Ford. He's a great example. Usually himself, though can pull off the suprises.

Yup, Harrison Ford is undoubtedly Harrison Ford in every roll, but he adjusts himself enough to be unmistakably a different character all the same. We know who he is in American Graffiti, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and even the recent Morning Glory (which was a surprisingly decent "light" movie), but the characters are all noticeably different and you can let go of the fact that it is Harrison Ford for the sake of the movie.
With people like Tom Cruise (and in a less annoying way for me, at least) Kevin Costner, they only seem to be able to do this intermittently (or find roles that bring this out somehow). Cruise somehow works in The Last Samurai. Costner is most definitely not British in Robin Hood, but gets the job done for that movie. We know it's Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, but that is still a fine movie: and I don't really love baseball anymore.
Guide: Tanking, Wall of Fire Style (Updated for I19!), and the Four Rules of Tanking
Story Arc: Belated Justice, #88003
Synopsis: Explore the fine line between justice and vengeance as you help a hero of Talos Island bring his friend's murderer to justice.
Grey Pilgrim: Fire/Fire Tanker (50), Victory
My favorite Brin novel: Kiln People. YMMV as to whether the story leaps off a cliff at the end, but its one of the best science fiction novels of all time in my opinion up to that point. The narrative is very thought-provoking and creative.

Another book of his that I really like is Glory Season. Very thought-provoking work, IMHO.

Costner plays a good southern gent.

i liked Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Untouchables.
I could probably stomach Costner for a 5 minute cameo as Pa Kent in this new Supes movie. But I just can't see him effectively pulling off any other more involved character here. Could you see Costner as General Zod for instance? I'm just not convinced.
I've liked Costner's performances in some of his movies, but somehow I almost think he's too "typecast" for a big role in the Superman universe. As others have said I think he plays "himself" so much that I'm not sure he could actually portray a "different" person as needed here.

Sigh of relief, I read the thread title and said,"Wait..what?"
Costner as country man? That's right up his alley!
Read the novel that The Postman was *very* loosely based on - David Brin's "The Postman" - to see exactly how bad that movie really is. Costner took one of my favorite sci-fi novels and dumped huge, steaming loads of "director's vision" all over the original story.

Plotwise, I did prefer the ending of the film over the book though; no spoilers, but the book sort of lost me towards end down a huge credibility gap.
There is an update to the article now, just read it, that says he is being eyed for Pa Kent.
I don't particularly love Costner, but I don't hate him either. I think he's picked some unfortunate roles and I think he's not a very good director. However I see him working well as Superman's father, so long as he has little say in the creative aspect of any part of the movie. I mean no creative aspect at all. If Costner says the roses in the background of a shot should should be red, then they need to paint the roses blue.
I did like Costner in the Untouchables. And Pa kent is a country guy, sort of like in field of dreams. It could work.
Interesting that Ursa will be in the flick but they are denying that Zod will be. That could be an interesting battle, Ursa V Superman. I really wanna see a movie with Superman VS Braniac, or Apocolypse. But mostly, I wanna See Superman VS Darkseid on the big screen!

I think Costner is dead on for the role of Pa Kent. Pretty much anyone could play this role well, but Costner is a big name that might draw more attention and he is great in the simple type roles.
