Wonder Woman Chosen
Myself, being an old school comic dork, it always frustrates me when Hollywood gets its' claws in a comic franchise because they never seem to keep it simple. They always have to change something because some fool in a suit, who has most likely never read a comic book to begin with, believes the show or movie won't work as portrayed in the comics.
95% of the time the suits are wrong.
Sadly this time I believe the suits are right.
As much as I wish the red, blue and gold suit would work and the original comic storyline could stay intact. . .their time has passed . . .at least for a weekly television show.
As I approach the age of 40(yikes), I have seen most of the things I enjoyed in childhood change, from re-vamps to re-writes, to a complete disavowing of previous work.If it takes a tweek of story and history to get Wonder Woman on the small screen, then go for it.
Let me put it this way.
Smallville.
Smallville is the biggest turd ever dropped on television. It has also survived for 10 years thanks to an attractive cast who do a good job with the complete manure that is written for them, and a very loyal fan base.I watch it every week.I have seen every show.I watch Smallville for the small, tiny moments that get it right. They are few and far between but they are there. Those moments make it worth it to watch, and make the rest of the time watching bearable.
I am hoping for the same thing from Wonder Woman.
A final comment to those jokers who posted that Palicki didn't quite "measure up".Lynda Carter is one in a trillion.Beauty, grace and class . . .they just do not make them like that woman anymore.
Adrianne Palicki is not exactly lacking in the "asset" department either.Get stronger glasses or maybe put the bottle down for a bit.Or maybe do both.
I expect better fight scenes than the Lynda Carter era Wonder Woman, and I want to see the moves she displays in Superman/Batman Apocalypse, Wonder Woman Animated Movie, basically, some of those wrestling moves that makes me cry that I can't perform them in CoH.

What really puzzles me about this:
The rights to Wonder Woman can't be all that cheap, even for Hollywood. She's a prominent character with an established history.
So why even buy the rights if all you're going to do is strip away everything established about the character and turn her into Generic Vigilante Woman? Just create Generic Vigilante Woman and be done with it.
The project would probably have a higher probability of success (no disappointed fans) and be cheaper to boot.

This allows us to eat our cake and have it, too. Wonder Woman's origin story is intact as a heroine of WWII. Then, when the job is done, she returns to the island and goes back to not aging. Now trouble brews again and she returns to the outside world to kick some bad guy butt. Since her roots are in myth, just make the Big Bad one of the Greek gods stirring up trouble.
You can actually have all the real-world references to Wonder Woman remain, such as being on the cover of the first issue of Ms. Magazine and becoming a symbol of the feminist movement as the original "strong woman". Just flip it from her being a fictional character to being a real one in this TV universe. Add in a female grad student character who was inspired by WW doing research and uncovering the location of Themyscira so she can engage her help in defeating the evil dude.
Update the costume to something more modern (but not as '80s-simple as the current retarded one), but going back to the have-it-and-eat-it version of the cake, make sure the new costume gets trashed during some dust-up so she has to don the classic one. Win-win. With an extra helping of win on top.
I can fix Superman, too.
Just to keep up my Grammar Pedant Quota for the month, the two versions of this word are as follows:
it's -- contraction of "it is".
its -- used for everything else, like possessives and stuff.
Just remember the contraction version and use the other one in every other instance.

I'd have to go back and look at the article again, but I'm pretty sure that the guy behind the pilot and the conception of this new show was specifically saying that he wanted Wonder Woman to be some sort of corporate executive , less powerful, no Greek heritage etc.
Granted there is a lot that can change in the next year before this hits the TV and certainly even after it gets on the air it has room to grow and change over the seasons, assuming it lasts for more than one. So there can be room to get her some powers and put her in the costume etc. They might do it like Smallville and slowly grow the character into a more powerful version etc. That being said, if from conception the guy is saying, "No suit, no greek heritage, less powers, she's a corporate exec" it does seem that the show is already starting on the wrong track, and for people who like WW, it can already get them thinking Doom N Gloom. |
Honestly I feel like for as big of a deal as WW is to DC, one of their big trinity, they'd take more care to market her more carefully, make a good movie about it and be good about what ever TV show they put her in. That being said, maybe there is a lot more to this show than we know, time will tell, but the early word is the conception of this show, isn't much like WW.

Instead of wasting your time watching this show, go buy a corvette and get it out of your system.

Oh dear, it's really not going well!!
I mean, she was ok in Austin Powers and all that, but, no, just no.
What is it with Warner Brothers?? Can they not treat their own damn characters correctly??

I don't really have a problem with Hurley playing a Wonder Woman villain at face value.
As always I'll wait to watch it before I judge the sum of its parts. *shrugs*

Bah!
The only Bedazzled worth watching is the original with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook (and Raquel Welch).
And now the magic words, Julie Andrews! (snap)

It's not that the new one is especially bad, it's just a very different style of comedy.
The original was very subtle dry British style, like some Monty Python skits of the same period. Also Cook and Moore were probably the best comedy duo at the time. I also really enjoyed Cook's portrayal of the Devil.

Those things may yet come from this. I just think it's sad for people to read a few random words about a show that's probably nearly a year from happening and automatically assume it's going be sucky. *shrugs*
Trust me if this show does end up being sucky I'll be in the vanguard of tearing it a new one left and right. I'm just going to maintain a tone of "hopeful neutrality" about it until I know which way to judge it.
