Discussion: MMORPG.com interviews CoH producer Nate Birkholz

I'm missing this quote in the story linked....
The only thing I would say is the game STILL could benefit heavily from some main stream advertising. I saw a competitor's commercial on TV the other day and while it won't sway ME, it was pretty awe inspiring and could easily pull in folks that could be here.
"Orwellian dystopia"? I thought it was a utopia?
EDIT: I just realised, this is the first time that Beastyle has posted instead of Mod05

I find the comment about being surprised there aren't more Vigs/Rogues a bit odd. The reason for this is very simple - the system rewards staying at the extremes more than it does staying in the gray area. The ability to run on both sides does not balance out the ability to earn alignment merits from tips. On the average players will follow the rewards - no one should be surprised by that.
I'm not seeing an interview, all I see is a big advertisement for COH...

Right now, your choices are to stay with a pure alignment, and get more rewards, or go with a middle-ground alignment and... ... what? Have access to SOME more teaming opportunities?
You can't enter SG bases, so getting around is a pain. You can't use the other side's o-zone, so you can't start or join flashback teams (not even ones formed in bases, since, you know, can't enter those).. You can't run your own contacts on the other side, only radio/paper missions..
Honestly, being vigilante/rogue doesn't ADD that much, other than being able to get SOME of the other side's badges. and if you're after badges, you're probably going to go all the way so you can get them all.
If all you're interested in is teaming, you can generally get all the teaming you want staying on your side and using the relevant tools for getting people on your server.
So the question isn't "Why aren't people sticking with vigilante/rogue?" but "Why WOULD they?"

But my real reason is:
It's easier to film. But I'm a minority of one, here.

Badges and merits, I guess? If you can do ALL the task/strike forces that's a lot of merits. If you go for all the short ones, can't you get more that way instead of doing the same short one repeatedly and getting diminishing returns?
Just a thought...

Being able to do ALL of the tasks on BOTH sides doesn't significantly add to your options when you're looking at merit rate versus diminishing returns, unless you have an extremely high number of hours per day to dedicate to the game. I'm looking at this from a general case.
And D_R, you are not the general case.
Thematics is a valid one, and I DO have a vigilante myself because she's a grey area kind of character. But really, the system as it is now is HEAVILY weighted towards the 'pure' alignments, and doesn't give much to the middle ones.
Point taken. Of course, I do recall way back when the question was "who'd want to be a hero/villain?" Of course, that was before anyone knew about Alignment Merits and Powers.
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
'Twas a rather disappointing read after that... haha!

A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!
You know, maybe some people don't really use A-merits. Maybe not everything needs to be reward driven.
Or I might just be too stricken with altitis to really grind out enough A-merits to get something worthwhile <.<

Giving A merits as a trade for a few teaming opportunities is like giving people double inf for not using APPs. A nonsensical apples to oranges concept.

Nobody has to be a slave to loot, you can choose to farm that loot in a timely manner that doesn't effect the game play of every character you have.
And a nice fat add for a new Super hero MMO in the middle of the interview.... good work MMORPG!
" The superhero genre is remarkably broad. It incorporates science fiction, horror, fantasy, history, military, action, adventure… Even a little romance and a healthy dose of sex. We’ve told stories about alien invasions, secret societies, unrequited love, magical talismans, Orwellian dystopias, and scientific hubris. "
yep, just like seeing that affirmed by the devs. this is a broad concept hero game, not a slave to the 4 color tights and capes theme. Can we all get along now?
