Speaking of Challenge...

Here's a challenge for everyone here, and I'd dearly love to see something like this included as a requirement to advance in the Incarnate System:

The Mad Typist has what you need to advance in the Incarnate System, but he's locked it in a safe that's impervious to all external damage and he's rigged the safe with a timed explosive device that will destroy the safe and its contents - from within! - 30 seconds after you defeat him. The only way to stop the explosion is for you to type The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. twice in five seconds, after the countdown has begun. Be sure to capitalize that first T! Don't forget the period at the end! Spell everything correctly! Copy and Paste won't work - the letters and spaces must be entered in the proper sequence!

Let's Beta Test it! Skip ahead to the end of the big fight...

The Mad Typist: You have... defeated me... but you have not... yet... won... <keels over>.

Safe: Self Destruct sequence activated! Counting down to self destruct in 30... 29... 28...

/e waits for someone to post "People are having trouble with THIS? OMG! My three-legged blind hamster can do this while reciting the alphabet - backwards! L2T!"

Could there not be a better pangram than that one to use?

Wow, I never thought someone would set out to troll me specifically. I must be moving up in the world.

Heh. Not my intent, Sam, although your thread did suggest the title for this one.

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

I'm an extremely speedy typist and that still took me 10 seconds. Challenge fail.

Incidentally, when you make it past tense, you ruin the entire point of the sentence. "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is the actual sentence; without "jumps", the sentence lacks an s.

This is why we beta test!

What's to stop people form copy-pasting?

I've always favored "Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow!" myself. It also strikes me as somewhat easier to work into a plot involving game characters.

It would require the addition of a Sphinx of Black Quartz map, which in itself sounds pretty sweet.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

11 seconds. Darn. BOOM.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Ten seconds exactly.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
The quick brown fox jumps ove rthe lazy dog.

Eight seconds... but a typo! Doh! BOOM!

Yeah, that's not happening.

Right now defeating Reichsman is enough of a challenge. I've been in that TF for 3 weeks now. Maybe tonight will be the night we beat him! Go go gadget envenomed daggers! (Yes, we suck, no need to rub it in.)

What have you got against the letter S, maaan?

If we're going for every letter, I'm much more fond of "Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz."

We can make them type one sentence then the other in the challenge.

Thanks, but we can't invite people mid-TF. I don't mean I've been trying the TF over and over for 3 weeks. I mean I and my teammates have been engaged in one attempt for 3 weeks. We only play about 2 hours a week, and we spend half that time trying to remember which character to log in.

I have to say, my absolute favorite thing about the Incarnate system is that I can use shards to craft things without having to run any specific TF.

Edit: And my least favorite thing about the new forums is that the tongue sticking out smiley looks weird. Too happy.

And most of the remaining time is spent trying to figure out what zone they should be in. It's not a pretty sight.

That's 14 standard words in five seconds, for a typing speed of 168 wpm. I don't believe anyone on this forum can type that fast: most typists top out around 90-100 wpm.

If it was easy, anyone could do it - and it wouldn't be a Challenge! Without Challenge, well, where would we be today? Still turning over rocks with sticks to find delicious grub worms! So get out there, people, and sharpen those typing skills!

Personally, I think it's still too easy. How about if, during the 30 second countdown, every 5 seconds there's a 95% chance that a random member of the team will sustain 3500 points of Challenge Damage which can neither be avoided nor resisted. That will make things much more interesting! While still allowing a dedicated soloist to complete the arc, this will encourage teaming, as the more people there are on the team, the lower your chances of being zapped! It's brilliant, if I do say so myself!

168 words per minute is pretty much unobtainable for about 99.999% of all users. I know that my mother who was a secretary topped out at 110 words per minute, with another at her work hitting 120 on occasion (more errors overall though). Typical average (over ALL users) is 40 IIRC with 60-80 words being considered "fast" in comparison

That's the beauty of the game - there's heaps and gobs of regular content for those unable or unwilling to rise to the challenge, and their game play won't suffer at all if they don't earn the coveted and prestigious 'Five by Five Flying Fingers of Furious Fury' badge.

Words per minute on wikipedia

Look at that, and see that professional positions typically require a max of 70 words per minute and *might* top out at 90 words per minute...

Hell just setting the task to complete it once in 10 seconds is enough of a challenge...

Hmm, well then, how about this:

!god yzal eht revo spmuj xof nworb kciuq ehT in 10 seconds! 10 seconds - a virtual eternity!

or

zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba in 10 seconds! Maybe while standing on one foot...

or

I helped defeat the Mad Typist and all I got was this stupid badge and a token for a free pony ride should such ever be added to the game. in 17 seconds, or 20 if attempted while wearing a beanie cap with a spinning propeller (video proof required)!

I can't tell if this thread is trolling poor typists or people who don't think the new TFs are all that hard.

On a team of 8, each player only needs to type around 3.75 characters (including spaces) within that time.

COH is such an easy mode game, it's pathetic
