Roleplay - How does it work around here?
Thank you all for the helpful tips and information. Just have one last question to ask.
How in blazes do people end up in Praetoria in the first place? There must be something that happens to send people to an alternate Earth where Cole is the supreme ruler. I've yet to convert a character (and won't even bother with my Triumph ones. It's a four day process, I'd be better off leveling my villain that I want to go hero.) so I don't know how people suddenly leave their faction city for the middle one. |
And the IC reason would probably be either to help Cole's Utopia spread to our dimension or to help the Resistance in overthrowing Tyrant.

People who roleplay something that goes too far against the mechanics of their character. A Super Strength brute who happens to have a machinegun or is additionally a psionic is okay. A Peacebringer/Warshade that is "ACTUALLY AN ANGEL/DEMON LOL" is not "original" or "creative", no matter how loudly they whine about it. A Fire blaster who pretends his fire attacks are actually bolts of water is kind of silly. |
Likewise, a Peacebrings defined as an Angel is perfectly fine. Peacebringers shine like crazy diamonds, they're the 2nd coolest lightshows right behind Stormies. If any AT ever was made to portray an Angel, this is it. Never mind that the Peacebringer background as presented in the game is really lame, and any story is better than that. And that said, an Angel is such a loose concept that there's tons of other ways one could portray one. Fire Tanks, Rads, Illusionists, Archers, Broadsword Scrappers... they all work just as well.
What I'm trying to say here is, I think this is a fairly silly point for its majority. Yes, the Fire Blaster insisting he's shooting water is silly. But as long as the concept doesn't run counter to the in-game representation of their powers (and with Ancillary Pools and Temps it's quite easy to pick up extra powers beyond the scope of your AT) I really don't see the problem, nor can I see it as a necessary extension of a player's RP abilities as compared to how well the game can accommodate their ideas.
Mind you, I expect the worst everytime I drag my **** into the D, and more often than not, I find it. But I feel I can and must judge that on a per player or even per character basis. I've had terrible nights out with people whose every emote was sheer poetry but who were unable to weave a cooperative yarn. I've had a lot of fun with people who had a hard time constructing a grammatically proper sentence and whose character was obviously designed to be a sex toy. Prejudice is probably the least recommendation to give to anyone just setting out on exploring Virtue RP.

Nice pace to back and forth (not to mention the *actions* can be seen in any channel you use it in AND sometimes I prefer to add it into a single message, rather than put emotes in-between messages or always write out what the character is saying within an emote).

So here's my advice: pick up some chopsticks and use them. You'll enjoy the experience a lot more. You can do:
[Local] Super Guy: *walks up to the bar* sup *grabs a beer* |
Super Guy gives a passing glance at the nearby bar, deciding, heck, why not? Could use a drink anyway. A few quick strides and he's at the bar, leaning over the counter and giving an nod to the bartender. "Hey. What's up? Can you grab me a beer?" The bartender acknowledges him, and within a few seconds he's acquired his drink. |
No. It's not that hard, people aren't in that kind of a hurry, and there is no such thing as "habit" when it comes to consciously pressing a series of keypress combinations on your keyboard. Unless you have such low control over your own actions that you are completely incapable of avoiding such a thing, you CAN type /e at the beginning of your emotes instead of making yourself look like a tool with asterisks.
Seriously.
Never mind that the Peacebringer background as presented in the game is really lame, and any story is better than that. |
If you don't like the concept, why don't you just not play it? There's plenty of other powers you can use to represent your unoriginal angel character. Like Energy Blast. Or Broad Sword. Or Fire. Hell, anything vaguely angelic. Just don't mangle a perfectly valid and actually interesting and intriguing archetype's concept for the sole reason of "I think it sucks I'm going to make it better LOL XD". To do this is not only an insult to the people who worked hard to make that archetype for you to enjoy, but also to the people who actually roleplay that archetype and create actual, interesting storylines to go with it.
But that's too much to ask, isn't it? I guess people so caught up in their own self-importance that they forget what other people think or care about.
Translation: "Go to hell, game developers. I hate this unique and interesting game archetype that you spent a long time developing the backstory of and making it nice for people to play it. I'm going to impose my own ridiculous concept instead of having to deal with an archetype I actually have to adapt to the backstory of! I'm such a rebel for defying the oppression of the machine!"

Ah look, now you've gone and made me get all poetic on you.
I'm perfectly fine with people playing Peacebringers and Warshades as Kheldians, even though the taste got soured a bit for me when everyone and their mother made Kheldianized versions of their mains back when they first came out.
But the backstory is still not very enticing. Kheldian shards are basically a deus ex machina on the level of Dyne (which makes some people super-strong but gives others entropic powers). Shards either allow you to bond with a real Kheldian, just tap into their powers but at a lower level... or become a ******* Werewolf. WHAT? All Kheldians can shapeshift, but only into two pre-programmed forms mimicking creatures they've encountered before. Huh?
Yeah, sorry if I don't think it's the greatest story ever told. I can see what they were trying to do with Kheldians, mechanically, and I think it works well. But the backstory is just... well, if not for the revelations of the ITF, I'd have long since assumed that they just tried to forget all about it themselves because they realized how silly it all was.

More seriously, though, I already allowed as much in the post you're replying to. But since you're too hell-bent on reading what you want to read rather than what's actually being written you obviously didn't notice. 'Angel' is almost as wide a field as 'mutant' or 'spellcaster'. It's pretty much carte blanche for power selection. Moreso with power customization.
But we might want to step away from the idea of 'Angels' for a moment anyhow because I'm not comfortable discussing beings who have neither souls nor free will. It's... icky. What people look for when they pick a Peacebrings to represent something non-Kheldian is a 'being of light'. You can turn it any which way you want to, but no AT in the game will represent that better than a Peacebringer with their auras and beams. Whether you like it or not, some people play the game in such away as to find the AT that most closely matches their concept, then superimpose their concept onto that AT, no matter what it is meant to represent.
I hold that to be a legal approach, you don't.
I have a Claws/SR Scrapper who's built to be a Blaster really, cause I don't like Blasters and was looking for another way to build a ranged attacker that wasn't one of my dozen or so Defenders. Should I be put to the stake now? I obviously went above and beyond the traditional definition of the Scrapper AT.

Do not RP with anyone who writes a long involved post about how to RP.

Oh, crap.
/e jots down a note never to eat Chinese food with Mondo.
Generally speaking, I'd suggest avoiding Pocket D like the plague. Since its inception, it's pretty much been the leper colony of the most stereotypical, overdone, angsty nonsense imaginable. While a lot of RPers do frequent the place, it seems to me that a lot more avoid it.
Of course, you might be interested in that stuff and different people have different experiences. At the very least, if you check it out, please don't use it as the yardstick of RP on Virtue. |
So while Pocket D for the most part is slime, there are RPers out there looking for other RPers. Take a chance and do a little RP and find each other. Otherwise, good ships can pass in the night.
It's funny... But I hadn't even noticed that Mondo had posted earlier in this thread...
I think I will continue with that mindset.
Sorry... I'm a trifle deaf in this ear, you'll have to speak up next time.

You're never gonna convince MondoCool on the Kheldians. All I can suggest is that you consider that, if you applied that stupid argument to the rest of the game engine, you would conclude that it was a horrible abuse of the game to claim to have hugged another player, since it's physically impossible to do so in the game engine.
You are, in fact, welcome to use any power set to represent any thing you want. It might work better or worse for some power sets, but it's up to you what you think is the best approximation the game engine has for your concept, and you are not required to do something that matches the flavor text.
Everyone should roll pure healers instead. As few attacks as possible and pick up the medicine pool.

Using asterisks to emote is like using a spoon and fork to eat in a traditional Chinese restaurant instead of chopsticks. Yeah, you can eat with it. But it makes you look like you can't do it the way it was designed to be done.
So here's my advice: pick up some chopsticks and use them. You'll enjoy the experience a lot more. You can do: Or, if you want to actually have fun and take the time to put some thought into the character you are controlling, you can do: Seriously. Is it that hard to put some basic thought into one's roleplay? Are people in some amazing hurry to roleplay that they cannot come up with posts that look like actual posts instead of some asterisk-infected fanfiction? Is it your "habit": a physical impossibility to not press shift+8 before and shift+8 after every pose? Or you could do something like this...
*Gives a passing glance at the nearby bar, deciding, heck, why not? Could use a drink anyway. A few quick strides and he's at the bar, leaning over the counter and giving an nod to the bartender.* "Hey. What's up? Can you grab me a beer?" *The bartender acknowledges him, and within a few seconds he's acquired his drink. *
Same amount of thought put into the RP, and it uses asterisks!

Edit: Also, yes! Pure healers are awesome! I have 5 Empathy Defenders with only one attack, and I'm making an SG of Empathy defenders with only one attack each. It's gonna be awesome!

While I don't have any of either type of character setup, I'd like to point out that just cause someone is into ERP or has extra parts in their pants doesn't mean it's all about sex for them at all times. Though there's certainly more than one example of players hung up on getting laid ICly, tags advertising the possibility of this occurring actually strikes me as less dreadful than people without such tags turning out to be just as sex-crazed or worse. Also, there's still some discussing with regard to what 'M(ature)RP' stands for, as for some people it means ERP, and for some people it means 'not naive RP' apparently. And then there's the ever-ominous 'All RP' tag which to me always suggests that the player'd like to get laid, but is too timid to ask and doesn't want to blemish what they perceive to be their rep.

As an added point, using asterisks in /local for an emote means that your name shows up in the right color, if you have that option on. This can be helpful for keeping track of things when there's a lot of chat scroll.

I use asterisks much the same way you used the quotes there, to set apart speaking and acting in the same post. Also, it's hard to use emotes over /team or /sg, or in the arena.

You know what else sets apart speaking and acting in the same post, that people have been using long before the first AOL chatroom roleplayer got the idea of asterisks?
These things:
" "
If using the /e command is so terribly difficult for you, you could do the following:
[Local] Super Guy: Super Guy gives a passing glance at the nearby bar, deciding, heck, why not? Could use a drink anyway. Bam. No need for asterisks.
Sorry your thread is just headed into a bottomless pit, Blazefire. I hope this doesn't skew your view of Virtue!
