Sexism in Costume Choices?

To be fair, I've been bemoaning the lack of long-haired styles for male characters ever since european launch. It's been a large part of why I don't make male characters on CoH, generally. That, and a guitar as a custom weapon, and my Metal God would be complete.
The bAron jacket seems to be an incredibly popular wish for female characters, and I can;t help but agree. Same with hair under hats.
Some of the design choices in this area just seem odd. Not necessarily prejudiced, but they do betray certain idelogical ideosyncracies about proper gender-specific appearances.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
No no men can't have shorts. That brings up the whole shaved/unshaved legs issue. Then if you give men unshaved legs some women will want it to and there goes the ESRB again (in the US anyway) lol. We went through all this with nipples. Seriously though there are a LOT of immature players and if you give them ammunition they will use it and you be admitting 'Nancy Boy' joining your SG because, after all, you shouldn't judge. As a GM do YOU want to put your job on the line for saying what is cross dressing and that it is inappropriate? Well for men anyway, no one dares tell women what to wear - no one would dare accuse a female charater in a flannel shirt and work boots of not dressing appropriately (unless she also had an inappropriate name then they'd make you change the name). We live hip deep in hypocrisy. The easiest way to avoid problems is not to take risks. I think some long hair isn't TOO much, but I'm sure they had a lot of meetings before they even introduced kilts. Personally I don't think varieties of shorts would be all that popular for guys. "Bicycle Delivery Guy" dies on the vine. |
Your arguments are invalid, and have a bizarre form of gender myopia.
I say, long hair for men. Skirts for men. High heels for men. Tops with skin for men. Male costume pieces for women (I really want the Baron Boots for my female characters!)
In my experience, it's not just the use of costume pieces that make creating characters fun - it's using costume pieces in ways other than the intended to create something completely new that's really fun.

Actually, my pet peeve does work in this thread. If the devs decide to follow up on this particular thread, It'd be nice to see the Military Decorated jacket made available for female and huge model characters.
The Abrams is one of the most effective war machines on the planet. - R. Lee Ermy.
Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?
A: You crash into another one.
I, too, would like to see more options ported across the gender lines. Personally, I think it's downright terrible that a Male or Huge character is denied the shoulder kitten. It should not be so.
On the other hand, the character creator is already massive and a bit unwieldy at times. It's not very well sorted out and could probably use a UI upgrade.

I just want the kitten and panda shoulder options for males. That would make me happy.
And maybe the ability to make muscular women instead of constant super models. Don't get me wrong, I have MANY female characters with whom I'm quite happy for their appearances. But when I make a strong female character, I'm not as happy when she's just another model. Guys can be HUGE. Can't women be a little buff at least?
My Stories
Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
A little bit would be ok - but anything more would just be gross

Yes there is sexism in the way male costume choices are limited.
I also wish for more variety in "ethnic" pieces. I can haz grass skirt (for men and women)? More African accessories would be great.
Necklaces, anyone? Am I the only player who wishes for necklaces?

It's a political thing. Allowing males to wear female costume options would drastically change the ESRB rating of
|
That is highly unlikely. As an example of why, I have in front of me 2 different games for the Nintendo Wii: Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party 3, and Dance Dance Revolution: Disney Grooves.
In both of them, if you wish to do so, you can completely dress up male characters (both built in, and Miis) in any of the girls' outfits, and vise versa, no gender restrictions whatsoever.
Ratings on these two games? E (for Everyone). Well, Disney Grooves is plain E, HP3 is E-10+ (Mild Lyrics/Suggestive Themes).
So no, this would not change CoH's rating at all.
I wish female characters would have a muscle definition slide.
Nothing to much over the top, but something similar to the female Paragon protector. Female bodies are too plain, tops with skin doesnt look good.
Also, the chest should be remade, and have the shape of Mother Mayhem chest. That would make everything look better.
Im sorry but if it was in my hand I would press the button to delete all current skin tights and replace them with new textured skin tights, like the tank top, witch, and plus versions.
Current skin tights are low-res body painting. Some colours like grey or white doesnt even look well.

And like I said in the other thread where you copy-pasted the exact same post - "body paint" is the only way we're ever going to see a muscular female texture. If you think the graphic designers will re-export two versions of every single texture you propose to make, you think wrong.
|
Why should it bother you?
I dont even think they will even upgrade the ones we have for the current female body...
But those are my wishes.
Btw, if they ever add a muscled texture, I dont think we could use a skin tone if they do it like normal tights, to avoid people to make naked characters.
Maybe just a muscled tight (2 colours, no skin tone) and muscled skin tights (1 colour and skin tone).
They could add that, and upgrade more basic skin tights options to plus versions, so everyone is happy.
What's wrong with men wearing skirts, I mean the Scottish can do it, why can't we?
