  1. I wish I had a few more levels on the latest defender project. Cosmona is 37. We'll see where she ends up after tonight. Regardless, I'll be around with something useful, though I might miss Sara Moore. This will be some people's last chance at the legendary Dr. Quat.

    See ya soon.

It's important to have a bit of wiggle room so that your power supply isn't worked to its limits every time you turn it on. If you shorten the life of your power supply, it could take the whole machine with it when it gives up.

Dell power supplies might be a proprietary form factor, so you might not be able to upgrade easily. I've not dealt with it, I might be wrong.

Here's a drive bay supplemental power supply that might do in a pinch, but I'd recommend you save the money for a new machine instead:

    Spybot 2

    I have a few ideas.

First thing is to verify files. R-click COH in the launcher and click Repair (consistency check)

Consider the possibility that the spybot2 was in impostor program and that a trojan may have been installed or was already on the system. Also consider that some trojans can disable certain antivirus programs like Norton. Try MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Avast antivirus, or Ad-Aware and AVG antivirus, or all of the above.

What's the error screen? The details would probably mean nothing to me, but someone might get an idea.

Can you disable Norton and get the game to launch? I'm not a big fan of Norton or McAfee. Their popularity could work against them. If a rogue programmer can make the virus immune to a single virus scanner, it would probably be one of those 2.

I'm not really a tech person, but I hope this helps.

  11. I'd like a cleaner interface at the server list, something like a Show All/Show Favourites option. I'd even prefer an alphabetized list to the current list or other sorting options. The 2 biggest 'problems' I have with the current server list is the changing order and that the whole list doesn't fit on screen and has to use a scroll bar.

They're certainly minor annoyances, but if it's feasible to make an improvement, I'd like to suggest it. Thanks for your time.

    $2k beast

Before you get your heart set on the i7, I'm going to risk repeating myself and ask if you expect anything for the $100 premium that you're gifting to Intel.

Google it, it's been asked before: i5-2500k vs i7-2600k, there's no reason for the vast majority of users to pay the extra money. The performance boost was negligible even on games that do support hyperthreading, which is not many. (GTA4 framerate went from 58 fps to 61 fps with HT turned on, for example)

If you're going to do video editing or rendering, then yes, you may get value for that $100. I think putting an extra $100 towards video card and/or motherboard would bring more joy.

I'll leave it at that. Have fun with whatever you go with.

    $2k beast

The i5-2500K is probably the best bang for your buck, processor wise. It's in Father Xmas' rig that Hyperstrike recommended. The K is important, it's got an unlocked multiplier, the other Intel processors of this generation can't really be overclocked. The i7 isn't really necessary unless you want hyperthreading and many programs won't ever make use of HT. Put the 2500K on a P67 or Z68 motherboard (see Father XMas' recommendation) and push it.

Damn. Sorry if these suggestion seem too obvious: updated drivers, or maybe a prior version? Is it fully powered (a power connector on the card, besides the power it draws through the slot)? Is there dust or debris in the slot that can be blown out with compressed air? Are there any BIOS updates for that mobo?

I hope you can get something working. Good luck.

  15. The GT 520 is not a good video card. Can you take it back? What card did you replace? You might want to put that one back in.

Here's a ranked list. The GT 520 is highlighted.

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/vi...GeForce+GT+520

No, it's there, keep scrolling down, way down. It's a bit below the 6800 GT that was decent like 6 or 7 years ago. Nvidia shouldn't have bothered to make the GT 520.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear.

Here's a 240 GT for $25 after mail-in rebate. It's a low end card, but not the very bottom end and will definitely be an improvement over what you're using.

Father Xmas will probably have better suggestions than mine. If this is the first computer you've built, congrats, the next one will be better, stronger, faster. Have fun with it.

Oh, yeah, I should have realized you'd already been working on it. The old 7800 is AGP, so it's not going anywhere anyway. I'd like to nudge you towards a video card if you can swing it. I won't try to recommend one because I've not kept up myself. If you're set on getting an IDE card, maybe skip the SATA HD for a video card and upgrade later?

    Just a thought.

That processor was unlocked by AMD and should be a dual core.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Sem...hlon,8447.html

I'm pretty sure your 7800GS would make a better gaming card than the onboard 8300GS. Try both and see for yourself. You should backup and wipe a hard drive and start building already. Have fun!

  20. Does the video card memory count towards the 3 GB limit of 32-bit OS? How does windows divide up the allocations?

Ultimus, it's time to get a 64-bit operating system and maybe treat yourself to a solid state drive (SSD) to put it on.

    Jer
  21. Drop the i5-2500 and get the i5-2500K for $10 more. The 2500K has an unlocked multiplier and overclocks nicely, if you're into that sort of thing.

    Just a suggestion.

Power plays can make for some pretty exciting hockey. Besides that, some teams are very good at power plays and some teams are not. A good power play is an asset and the refs should never be allowed to negate the assets of the players on the ice. Putting the whistle away favours the team with the weaker power play. The games should be called according to the rulebook. It isn't pro wrestling.

That said, Vancouver's power play was not an asset in the final round

What? If you're not booing Gary Bettman, you're not a fan of hockey.

Here's a brief montage dated from 2009. His popularity has not improved.
