Sherlock Holmes....

So just watched the Robert Downey Jr version of Sherlock Holmes and I have to admit that it was an enjoyable flick.....the ending left it open for the story of Holmes to continue as well.......

I liked it, too. It was nice to see Watson portrayed as a competent partner to Holmes rather than the bumbling sidekick. And I thought Downey's Sherlock had the right combination of intensity and jerkwad-ness.

I liked that as well. It's a big reason why I liked the movie Sahara as well. The comic relief sidekick is an ex-SEAL. It's good to see the sidekick guild raising the bar for new recruits.

Of course they left it open, no studio in Hollywood would tie up obvious sequel fodder as Sherlock Holmes. He started as a magazine serial after all.

They green lit the movie sequel after the first test showings and principle photography for the sequel is probably finished by now. There was a bunch of on location photos circulated back mid October.

Yeah, I remember hearing complaints about it too. I thought all those complaints were unfounded. It's a fun movie to watch.

I enjoyed it for what it was. I'll always prefer the more cerebral Holmes; but as an "Action-Holmes" type movie, it was pretty good.

Of course, Jeremy Brett will always be the king.

Preferring one style of Holmes over another is fine, but what got me were all the complaints about Holmes knowing how to fight and carrying a gun. Some people acted as though it was sacrilege, despite the fact that Holmes in the novels is an amateur boxer and carried a revolver with him on a regular basis.

And the reason I didn't care for Sahara that much was because it differed a bit too much from the book. If you liked the movie, you should definitely check out the Dirk Pitt series by Clive Cussler. There are a total of 21 books in the series as of last month but the earlier ones have proven to be better than the more recent ones.

Well partially because the torch has been passed to the son, both the character (and daughter, twins) and the author (just a son here). But mostly because how many times one man (and his trusty sidekick) can save themselves, the girl, the country, the planet from all the Bond style foes they've run up against.

Last novel I read they solved global warming. Well they foiled the plans of someone who was making a buck with a phony carbon sequestering scheme while saving the scientist (female of course) and finding the rare raw materials for an actual working system.

I actually pointed that same fact out to someone when the first trailer came out. You just have to be in the right mind set going in. If you go in thinking of the books or the Jeremy Brett series, yer gonna be disappointed.

If you go in with the idea of "okay, this is Hollywood Holmes", then you can enjoy it for a fun action romp with some clever 'Holmes-isms' thrown in here and there.

I enjoyed this one so much in the theater, that I'll have to watch it again now that you guys have reminded me about it.

I've also read several of the Dirk Pitt novels. Eh. They are ok, and a good diversion to kill time at work when I have the opportunity.

Anyone here seen the BBC adaption, I think just called 'Sherlock' set in modern times?
I don't think theres enough excellence to describe that series I hope they do more.

Seems that if you are an "intellectual geek", people find it strange if you are interested in martial arts or weaponry from a purely cerebral perspective. Kind of like Batman being a genius but when it comes time to fight, he should run and rely on Robin to provide the muscle.

Holmes in the novels and short stories could easily defend himself and was quite skilled in several forms of fighting.

The Nigel Bruce portrayal of Doctor Watson from the 40s was an injustice to the character, Hollywood's way to make Holmes seem smarter by making Watson dumber. Sadly since it's this portrayal that most people remember rather than the more representative version done by David Burke and Edward Hardwicke during the Jeremy Brent days of playing Holmes, the idea that Watson is an idiot persists.

I loved Guy Richies' choice of energy in, editing, camrea, and art direction.

To me things kind of fell apart right at the end, but I'm still a fan of Robert Downy Jr., Guy Ritchie, and this film in general. I'll likely be seeing the sequel in the theater...and that's saying a lot for me as I almost never go to the theater since I'm poor.

My favorite aspect of the film was showing how Holmes got so miserable when there was NO mysteries left. He knew everything, and when he knew everything, ther was nothing to be happy about. But then, poof, a mystery, and he is all back up in it. Loved that.

Only problem I had with the film was that I watched it On Demand with a firend, so I could not put on subtitles and it took me some time to adjust to the accents.

Other than that, it was spectacular!

Yeah, if Holmes didn't have a case he'd go straight for the cocaine.
