new scrapper ideas?

I just came back to the game after several months of being gone, and after several years of not doing any PvE, for the most part. I'd like to try PvE again, and I've decided that a scrapper would best fit my goal: solo-friendly, good damage, and good survivability.

The only way I have any chance of actually leveling up a new toon is if both powersets are new to me. And because I've played almost everything already, that leaves only a few choices.

For secondaries it's between elec and shield (leaning towards elec), and for primaries it's between elec, fire, and MA (leaning towards elec again). Any suggestions on what would be best to play and what to pair with what? I definitely prefer to have great AoE damage, rather than ST damage. I know fire is probably the best for that, but how does elec compare? I'd prefer to avoid fire, since I already have a /fire tank, but if it's just twice as good as everything else, I could probably deal with playing it.

Most likely I'd be playing casually, so the toon will never have the best IO's...probably just SO's. So keep that in mind when you answer. For example, I know shield is probably stronger overall than elec with a huge investment, but what about straight out of the box with just SO's?

I have very extensive experience with BS/regen, DM/SR, and claws/regen. So perhaps you can compare the other sets to these in terms of damage/survivability, so it'll be easy for me to relate.

Thanks!

Bump. For some reason it says I posted this "yesterday" even though it was only a couple hours ago.

Can't really go wrong with a Fire/Shield Scrapper. There are tons of threads about 'em around here. It's great damage, good survivability if you carry some purples with you. All you'd really need is one or two purple inspirations once you get SO'd and all. And along the way, if you ever plan to IO out, he'll be an unstoppable beast.

Scrappers are about doing whatever the h*ll you want, whenever the h*ll you want.

Elec/Shield and Fire/Shield are both very solid choices. I don't have a ton of experience with /Ela.

I'll throw in my vote for Fire/SD as well. I'm working on an SO'd version right now and he's pretty awesome so far. I can't wait to see what he'll be like when I can afford to put some IO's in though!

Electric shield is an AOE MONSTER. You can also cap melee/ range/ AOE defense pretty easily with that combo.

Fire can also throw down some good AOE damage. Elec/ Sd has better burst AOE damage, but fire has relatively good single target damage.

Martial Arts is not very good AOE, but excellent single target.

Also both fire/sd and elec/sd are excellent farmers for IO hunting.

All true.

I have a Fire/SD and Elec/SD but I'm having a hard time getting into the Elec/SD. I'm more than sure it's just because he's only running SO's but the 3.3 second cast time on Thunder Strike and the hit/miss factor on Chain Induction have been getting on my nerves.

But ya, overall the Elec/SD is gonna be the best bet all around...especially if you wanna sink some cash into it.

Since the OP stated that they are only going to be using SO's, do you think Elec/SD would still be as powerful? I'm kind of asking for the both of us now...heh...

Thanks for the replies so far. So is elec armor really bad or something? Everybody seems to love shield, but either nobody knows about elec, or it just sucks?

SD is so good it is broken, and the Dev's apparently like it that way. Thus it has become the default 'go to' powerset for minmax powergamers.

I have three of them at fifty myself.

/ela is, on the other hand, a perfectly awesome armor set. I have two at 50 and am thinking hard about another. It is resistance based with a nice little self heal that also serves as a mild version of conserve power. Even better, /ela is practically immune to endurance drains.

If you combine electric armor with electric melee, you create an unholy monster of awesome. You are immune to end drains, and you drain all about you. All of your attacks have a chance of draining the baddies and giving the end back to you.

Elec/elec's have infinite wells of endurance: They never stop. Sappers are nothing but pretty light shows, you can farm carnies for fun, and those darn freakshow super stunners are barely annoyances. Clockwork cannot harm you and rikti are barely work, except for the lethal swords. Take tough and weave.

I ran my elec/elec to 50 jiffy quick, and it was one of the most fun runs I've ever had. Thunderstrike is a pbaoe that does huge amounts of knockdown, which gives time for your energize to pop again and heal you back. Lightning Rod is...so much awesome. You have to see it to believe it. Plus, for even more damage, an elec/elec can run their damage aura without too much effort, and the end drain and damage REALLY starts to add up, one thing stacking on another.

Havoc and charged are solid little single target attacks, although I strongly recommend Air Superiority for more single target punch. It also adds even more knockdown, which will help your survivability. Jacons Ladder I find meh, others like the narrow cones. if you take Air Sup, do NOT take hover or fly: You only knockback protection is grounded, a power that you have to be on the ground to use. I strongly recommend a knockback IO on top of grounded.

At the very top-end, elec/elec has tons of potential: With serious investments it can get considerable amounts of +defense to stack with the very good resists and very good self-heal and very good melee mitigation. Mine, even with no sets slotted, is among my more durable toons. An elec armor tank with alpha slotting should be able to get among the highest resists in the game and stack it with some serious +def.

Plus, elec/elec is just fun to play. It looks awesome and sounds awesome.

So, you can play yet another FOTM, or you can have some real fun. Totally up to you.

I wouldn't say it's "so good it's broken"

It's just that it's abilities lend itself to be IOed out easier, possibly even cheaper, for OMG rewards.

Thanks for the detailed response mauk. One question: is thunderstrike really knockdown, or knockback?

I am really leaning towards elec/elec now. SD sounds like it relies mostly on defense, and since I already have an SR scrapper, it would be too similar. Meanwhile elec is resist/heal based, which is different from both SR and regen, and most similar to my fire/SS tank, which I consider my strongest melee toon.

So elec's AoE damage is good, right? Would it be safe to say it's #2 behind fire for scrappers? And where would you rate the ST damage of it?

Thunderstrike delivers kb but the mag is so low it just knocks down, unless there is a huge lvl disparity.

SD is mostly defense, so if you're sick of defense, elec is a great choice because it's mostly resistance with a heal and end recovery/drain powers. And while SD is very popular, sets like elec and fire can boost your offense just as nicely (theres an elec and fire in the pylon thread that do similar damage to the top shield builds), and if built properly can be very survivable.

Elec's aoe dmg is second to none, imo. You have jacobs ladder, thunderstrike, chain induction and the glorious lightning rod. Thats some serious aoe carnage. That gives you more options than fires fire breath and fire sword circle. Where elec falls behind is in single target damage, where fire remains a top contender and elec is more in the mediocre range, though not as bad as some would suggest.

Electric Melee/Dark Armor, because it's awesome and unusual.

Although Elec/Elec would be awesome too.

ST damage for Electric is pretty bad, since they pretty much only have 2 ST attacks, but the AoE is so much fun you won't really mind.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Well I made an elec/elec. Level 22 already, and I love it. Very fun. Thanks again

I recently went through the exact same thing, been playing for years pvp.. took a break, then came back for some pve and maybe pvp again. I made a elec/elec scrapper and took it all the way to 50. It has been an amazing character. Unless I hit up lightning rod, or have buildup/inspirations popped/crit I feel like the ST damage is a little weaker but elec melee makes up for it by having quick recharge times, endurance drain, knockdown, and aoe. Crits definatly help. Charged brawl and havok punch are awesome, thunderstrike has some nice crowd control with the knockdown (not knockback), chain induction and jacobs ladder are decent adds to aoe damage, and lightning rod is just pure awesomeness. Lightning rod really fills a lot of gaps imo.

Electric armor has been a blast! The resistance is solid as I can withstand a few attacks from high lvl enemies/ebs/avs, the end drain protection is awesome, power sink keeps me going from mob to mob, and energize really works wonders as a heal. Lightning reflexes make buildup, energize, and power surge more readily available too. Speaking of power surge.. I have never been a fan of tier 9's with a crash at the end, but this one is worth it for sure. The best thing I've noticed about elec/elec is I can keep mobs/bosses short on endurance

I still think about other scrapper combinations, but I think elec/elec is my best bet for what I was looking for. Loaded with damage procs it could be a solid pvp annoyance as well.

I am honestly surprised as to how fun it's been. Please tell me lightning rod is also knockdown like TS, not knockback.

I believe its a knockdown, though more like a knockdown full of thunderous awesomeness!

It is indeed knockdown as well. Thunderstrike and lightning rod to knockback if the mob is too low level ive noticed, but this really shouldnt be an issue :P

The only big hole in /ela for a scrapper or tank for that matter is toxic damage(there are some threads about it)but proably easily avoided since its mostly vahz i think? I have a 40 ela tank and took a ele/sd scrapper to 50 and both are/ were fun. Right now my fave is my FM/SD scrapper - can use a few more tweeks but is doing pretty good right now. my build is below and relied heavily upon all the fantastic advice from the folks in the scrapper forums. below that one is the data chunk for him with SO only before i got sets - hope you have as much fun as i ma

I disagree with this; you can take Fly, just don't Fly while fighting.

Arachnos has quite a bit of Toxic damage actually. And another hole at high levels would be Longbow -Resistance grenades, although at least they don't stack anymore and send you into negative resistance numbers.

It's knockdown, but it's also extremely deadly, so a lot of things will be dead and it won't matter where the bodies fall!

Longbow -res grenades don't stack? That's not what I've seen in-game lately, they stack just fine. Am I missing something?

Yeah, they stack just fine. I suppose Obscure Blade might be confused about the change - they used to be unresistable -res, so 3-4 of them would send your res to negative numbers even on a Granite tanker. Now, the debuff is resisted by your resistances, so if you have good resistances, sonic grenades aren't the showstopper they used to be.

Ah, that must be what I was thinking of, sorry for the error.
