Frequent crashes since I19
Well so far so good, but this actually worked! No crashes during an Apex. I'll try turning the fan up next time I play. Maybe this is the solution.

I find my 5870 to generally run between 60C & 75C, at least, when I bother to look.
Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |
There's a program called "Tuneup utility's" that you might want to try. It's a full version free trial for about a week. It's very useful for sorting out problems and finding programs running that you might not even know about. You'd be surprised about what can be effecting your system things you didn't know and things you forgot.
So I'm having similar problems but I know what's causing them...my sound. Every RWZ MS raid I crashed. I played with graphic settings but noticed that, on all the crashes, I always end up with a sound loop.
So on a hunch, I turned my sound down to 0 in the game and I've not crashed since. Did 4 MS raids in a row, max graphics, no crashes.
WTF is up with that?
Does any of this chime with stuff you guys have seen that might be causing my issues:

anyways glad u might be up and running, good luck
Getting the same issue. When talking to a contact or sometimes when opening a 'non standard' door, like going to a bank mission via the back of a van.
Not a heating issue. Happens within three minutes of booting up cold in the morning. Or I can play for hours, not opening new contacts or new dialogue boxes, and not have any problems. Usually only happens the first time I talk to someone. When I reload and talk to the person a second time, it usually does not lock up a second time. Also found, if I am with a group and let them talk to the contact or go through the door first, it happens much less often.
Given that it started the day I19 went live, I've just been waiting to see it get fixed in a patch.
Edit
Additionally, locks up every time without fail if I try to place an item in a base.

Any info you can provide us about your setup, rig, drivers would be helpful.
I am not psychic so its hard to help you nail down your problem. However, it could very well be a heating issue. I'm starting to think CoX isn't graphics hungry enough to make GPU fans kick in thus, cards overheat because they sit at a high enough temp to cause errors but not hot enough to make fans kick in.
Since your having issues with contact list, I suspect your having issues with graphics drivers.

This is a tough one to crack, basically I'm having similar problems. Here's the deal: Before Thursdays patch I was playing CoH just fine; no lag, no stutter, no freezing, no problem. After Thursdays patch I noticed that sometimes when I click on UI items (such as menu bar, power tray, chat panel, etc.) the game flashes black, fps drops down tremendously as well as sound slows down to try and keep pace with the game, stays that way for a few seconds and then speeds back up to regular levels. I haven't run into the contact window or UI crashing, and actually I don't get a crash window at all. At intermittent times, the game will "freeze" up and a Microsoft Window will appear telling me that my "Program is using to much system memory and must be closed."
So before you ask, I live in an apartment so yes there's lots of dust. My case however comes with a filter that gets cleaned off the same day I do my weekly maintenance. What little dust there is inside the case for whatever reason it got there gets cleaned out the same day. Every fan is also unplugged so that no electrical feedback is introduced backwards. And the dusting of the inside of the case is only as needed.
My temps are perfect as well. CPU never comes close to critical, gpu also stays withing range. CCC is constantly pushing the GPU fan at 80%, overkill imo but the card stays around 60 degrees so I'm happy.
Also, I'm using the 10.12 drivers for my ATI card which ran stable before the patch on Thursday. My Northbridge and Southbridge drivers were updated prior to that and full driver sweep of the ATI drivers were done before installing the new Catalyst and system restart done post install.
I've run through everything with a tech friend of mine including a system rollback and uninstalling/reinstalling of CoH. Still have this problem. So even though Roughtrade didn't post his specs he may be on the right track to current issues and that it's not hardware related. My friend and myself believe that this is a problem on the dev side of CoH, not the user. However, we both could be wrong so I attached my dxdiag to see if maybe someone else catches something we didn't take into account.

Ok, update:
I do my maintenance on Saturday nights around 10 to 11 ish which includes CCleaner, Defragler, virus/spyware, and rootkits. Last night after Defragler was done it said that my drive was at 10% fragmentation. I started playing at around 5 this morning and at 6:30 my client completely crashed my comp forcing me to cut the power. Just out of curiosity I opened up Defragler and analyzed my drive and it was up to 41% fragmentation. I don't claim to be an expert but there's something seriously wrong with the client now that needs to be addressed. Running another 2 hour defrag and trying again. Will update with more info later.

You guys aren't alone. I've had tons of crashes since I19, but my other games seem to be fine. Very mystifying.

Well I know one of my problems was a version of windows that came with my comp, something called xdark. I had been meaning to get rid of it and reinstall my copy of win 7 ultimate because of the constant bsd's I had been getting. So I did, letting CoH do it's thing and install from scratch all the way up to the latest patch. If I continue to have problems then the only thing I can think that's wrong is something got bugged in the client. We shall see

The important thing about diagnosing issues is more info. That way if there are other people who have the same or similiar hardware that you have, then its possible to nail down the issue to a common cause.
Yes, I see the graphical "lag" spikes whenever I pull up any extra windows in the game. WW trade screen being one of the worst lag causing graphical issues I see. I doubt were alone. I see this spike on both my Nvidia and ATI cards. Currently, I don't have any stability issues.
No question, there is a problem in the game's software, the hope is we can get along until Paragon can work out these bugs.
As long as we are good about getting the dev staff hardware and bug info the sooner (hopefully!) we can all be enjoying the game to its fullest.
I'm sure they have plenty of testing systems in the Paragon labs they just need to know what we got.
I'm just trying to help the community out.

CoH in WQHD
I'm in the same boat, it began occasionally, these long lag spikes that I only seem to experience in large teams, typically on Task Forces. I would immediately crash upon entering the zone for the Apex Task Force. My whole computer freezes during these lag spikes, leading me to believe that it's a graphical issue. I am not in ultra mode either. However it's possible it may be something else. I am playing on Virtue server, which in the past has had it's problems, it could be that the server is so busy, it could be my connection, or something else. But everything it all began after i19 was released. My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, I purchased it not too long ago, so I really have no clue.
Ok so here's how it went down. I went over to my friends house where I backed up all my data including the CoH directory. I then reformatted and reinstalled a regular copy of Win 7 Ult. Great thing is, no bsd's, bad new though the client still crashes. So my friend suggested uninstalling and removing any leftover traces of CoH and reinstalling that from scratch. Went through the entire install phase, logged on and got the "No response from server message." Deleted the .checksum and .prv files, flushed my dns, restarted comp, restarted updater, logged in and now I haven't crashed since. So my suggestion is if you're up to waiting for about an hour try reinstalling the client. My guess is something wasn't over written and some code got garbled during the last patch and if you start fresh everything should be fine.

Not sure if this is the same issue, but I just had two crashes within about an hour running the Roy Cooling arc through Ouroboros. The first was at the beginning of the final mission, then it just happened again after I talked to him to complete the mission.
Also, just thought of something. There seemed to be a lot of long load times and such while entering the different instances, or even different areas of that instance (such as, going up and down the stairs in the mission where the building is crashing and you have to rescue those Rouge PPD).

I ended up have to reset the game when I experienced lag exiting a regular tip mission last night. Also getting around in zones and in missions sometimes becomes a hassle now that I'm beginning to lag when playing solo. So I think it's getting worse... So now I have no idea whether it's just because Virtue server is so busy or it's a graphical issue on my part. I played around with some of the graphic settings, like shadows, water effects, or any effects that I could understand what those effects did. No change. Again, I haven't had any trouble like this prior to i19.
Well...I've been having "issues with the game for quite some time now & I've done ALMOST absolutely everything I know to troubleshoot and/or fix it.
I've been working on this (off and on) for quite awhile now SInce I19 came out and it's been a virtual Crasha-palooza!
And it's 'hard lockups' too = I can't even get to taskbar or the task manager and restart or shutdown from there - so I'm having to reboot via the reset button - and it's been accompanied by a sound loop almost every time so far.
I've spent time digging through some old-ish posts from earlier this year, From the hear and the Nvidia forums, and other random-ish posts in whichever forums Google happens to lead me to...
There are still some thing left to try, and a sizable number of older drivers to go back and try (uninstalling and re-installing as I go), this isn't fun - I've managed a couple 5 mins or so at WW's with one alt, and another couldn't even manage to go pay SG base rent in Galaxy - locking up before exiting the Arena - where (to my surprise), I'd parked that Alt for 130+ days!
I'm realizing that I haven't been able to really play the game reliably in 2-3 (going on 4) months, and particularly the last 5 or 6 weeks.
It's time to turn on the Bat/Dev Signal - this has become absolutely crazy!
And -adding insult to injury - I never even get a chance to submit a freaking Crash Report either!
City of Heroes didn't fail, City of Heroes was killed. If a 747 dropped on your house, you'd say you were killed, not you failed to find a safer dwelling.

I've been working on this (off and on) for quite awhile now SInce I19 came out and it's been a virtual Crasha-palooza! |

1) Uninstall the entire game and make sure no traces are left behind of it.
2) Reinstall but don't log in. After the updater finishes installing and patching exit out.
3) In your CoH folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\) or depending on windows version: right click shortcut on desktop -> Open File Location. Find two files, .checksum and .prv and delete them.
4) Go to start menu and "Run" cmd. In the prompt that appears type: ipconfig /flushdns (e.g. <C:\WINDOWS> ipconfig /flushdns)
5) Restart your computer and reopen the updater, it should go through a checksum phase and repair a few files including cityofheroes.exe. If it doesn't start over from step 3 though it should be noted that when I had to go back and delete the files I didn't see the .prv the second time.
After the final repairing of files you SHOULD be good to go. I haven't had a problem since. And the only lag I get is on the ITF hill. I hope this helps out and please report back if it does.
Find me ingame @Norlon
Winter ST
Ive had crashes in Wentworth;s, crashes at the Tailor, crashes exiting Pocket D, crashes on TF's.....
and many of them I need to restart my PC.
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
Rennfield's solution worked for me, altho I didn't reboot or clear my dns cache. I have now played for two days without a single crash. Frame rate drops and lag are still bad at times, but livable.
I am running a 6970 with 10.12 drivers.
Maybe CoH isn't intensive enough to trigger higher fan speeds. idk, your issues have just been
Short of a full outright graphics driver sweep to remove any traces of 10.10 or 10.11 I don't get it.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
