Frequent crashes since I19
Random question about CCC/ATI cards...
I looked in the settings to make sure the Catalyst AI was disabled and it was but I saw another option that I was curious about...
"Triple Buffering" was the last option and it was not checked...should it be?

Hmm...well this was interesting...
I right-clicked on the CCC icon in the sys. tray and there are 3 'options' or outputs listed (all listed as ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series) and looked in the first one (since I only have 1 monitor plugged in), then looked in '3D Settings' and Catalyst A.I. was set to "Standard" even though if I open up and look in the "All" settings it has Catalyst AI disabled and the xml file has it disabled too... o_O
Clicked on 'Disabled' in the menu selection....now I wonder if I'll get anything better
And I'll try the triple buffering if it doesn't work

Hmm....well, okay an update or two here...
So a few hours ago I was having an issue with only one of my toons (Magmificent, a lvl 50 Fire/Earth Dom.). Whenever I clicked the Contacts tab to open it up I'd lock up/freeze and have to ctrl+alt+del kill CoH. Then I could never log in to him again...if I tried to, I'd lock up.
So I have been in contact with technical support about my frame rate issues and mentioned my toon was 'stuck'....they forwarded the ticket to the GM team to move the toon but mentioned to me to try to launch CoH in safe mode to see if I could move the toon myself.
So while waiting for GMs, I tried and sure enough CoH Safe Mode worked...I moved Mag. to a diff. zone to see if that'd help, log out, back in (not in safe mode), click on Contacts and 'bam' lock up again...
After a few times of going into CoH Safe mode to move Mag. around I got an email from GMs saying, "we moved your toon to pocket D (paraphrased)."
During all of this I did that disabling of Catalyst A.I. as well as checking the "triple buffering" box in the CCC settings.
I log in to Mag. in Pocket D...and instead of clicking on contacts right away I wanted to test frame rate issue. So luckily I have one mission saved on him (Freaks and DE mission in Grandville (saving actors one)). Load the mission and away I went (diff. setting was -1 x6). No frame rate issues (or at least nothing like it was before hand)!
So now I'm feeling lucky....I click on the Contacts tab....wow, I didn't crash!
I finish off 5 more tip missions (plus the morality mission) on Mag. and had no issues! (beyond little hickups/whatever that is/was 'normal' for me).....
Now to see if it holds up and doesn't revert back to icky nasty frame rate issues....time for a TF to test it out too!
Edit:
Well I just finished an ITF with using my Magmificent toon. It was okay...still have some frame rate issues during some instances but in general it is at least slideshow slowness instead of slideshow death.

In the hopes that someone might benefit, however little.. Here is my Currently Working setup.
Syncless, by the way, is a program I use to keep the multiple account profiles in sync. Just copies any new changes into the other account folders.

I have CCC installed.
I have Catalyst AI set to "Standard" and Triple Buffering turned off.
Now for the CoH settings..

Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |
So after a small break I'm back to help out again. A friend of mine was having some serious issues with his comp. A little about it:
CPU: AMD Phenom X2 Quad Core 3.2ghz
Memory: 4gb DDR2
Video: ATI Radeon HD 5770
I think that's all I need to tell you about his comp. His problem was constant BSD's. One day he got 7 in a row so we started doing some research into the problem thinking it might help out here as well. First time we encountered the error someone had it traced back to the Video card cause the error was translated to "Faulty CPU 2." I didn't think that sounded right but we tried a driver wipe and reinstall. Three more BSD's later we encountered a different MESSAGE but the same code. We traced this back to memory, so we switched each stick of RAM out one at a time with not a single one failing, then two at a time until we had all 4 back in place.
To make a longer story short, we traced every single error we got to a different solution but none of them worked. Now, what we failed to realized is that most of the error codes we were getting were all traceable back to the CPU, hint hint. He hadn't updated the drivers for his CPU. This is especially true of AMD CPU's aparently, and something I didn't know before now. I'm not sure if it's the same for Intel (I honestly refuse to use Intel for personal reasons) but goto their websites and check out to see if there are any updated drivers. Also if you happen to know your motherboards make and model check for updated chipset drivers or if you have a prebuilt system (HP, Dell, etc.) check their website for any updates for your system.

Yeah, I just logged on to play a little bit on my Magmificent toon and he is now crashing every time I click on the 'Contacts' tab/window again.
I get the
Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
error message in the Windows Event Viewer. I've un-installed the CCC totally and that didn't help.
Looking online with that error message some people have seen voltage changes help with the crashing....but I've never done anything like that before so somewhat leery about doing so....but this is really annoying

Well I tried a few more things (un-installing drivers/CCC and re-installing/etc...diff. ways of doing it) and still have issues as far as frame rate/crashing goes (at least for one of my toons (Magmificent)).
I have turned on manual fan control in the CCC and turned it to 75% instead of the 40-50% or whatever it was at before.
There is an "Auto-Tune" button in the CCC ATI Overdrive section and when I clicked on it, it hung (didn't finish)...I was able to do other things (open programs/etc) but the Auto-Tune program/test just hangs....

The auto-tune can take a very long time. Starting it and walking away for 10 minutes is recommended. Just stay close enough to smell the ozone if something goes hinky .

Hmmm...okay, I might try it again...I know I left it open for at least 5 minutes...didn't know how long one of those usually lasts heh.

Ive been getting the sound loop crash A LOT.....
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
So have I big time, along with a BSOD with a 101 code.I'm really Hoping its the game and not my hardware.I've went as far as to turn off all ultra setting and i still get the crashes even if I'm just standing around in atlas (by myself no less!!).
My frustration level with this is hitting my hardpoint.
New update for game? No fix.
New update for drivers? No fix.
Do either of these companies give a damn about users?
Have there been any solutions yet? I just recently started playing again and I'm having constant crashes and its getting rather frustrating.
I've played before pre-i19 and I never had problems with crashing before.
The only solutions that work consistently are to downgrade to the 10.9 drivers, or to turn ALL settings (except AA and AF, they don't seem to matter) to the lowest.
When you refer to 10.9 drivers I assume you're talking about ATI graphics cards? I've got a GTX 460 so I guess I'm turning down all my settings...
Uh, yeah. ATi stable version is 10.9. Sorry, should have asked you to clarify. nVidia seems to be having less issues lately. Bad assumption on my part.

Just wish the issue could be dealt with though
Just recently bought GR and started having these issues. All my characters seem fine except the one new character I started in Preatoria. That character is now almost unplayable as I can't interact with any contacts or adjust difficulty without a crash. I started another character at the same time but in AP, and that character has no problems.
Strangley, and it may or not be related, the problems started when I began doing tip missions on the Praetorian. Crashes were few at first, but it seemed the more tips I did, the more frequent the crashes came. The last time I was able to play him was on his 10th tip mission. Since finishing that mission I haven't been able to interact at all with his contacts.
Running 11.1a now. It actually runs slower in terms of FPS.
About 10% slower since I was getting around 60fps with 11.1 and 10.12 but am getting 54 now. I still see lag spikes when I open wentworths, trade or contacts windows but now only down into the 19 FPS range instead of the 11 FPS range.
I haven't had any problems with crashes (like I did with 10.10 and 10.11)but I do see the graphical spikes still.

No luck. I have updated to the newest nVidia driver for my particular video card, uninstalled and reinstalled City of Heroes, lowered the graphical settings such as no shadows and other effects which I could understand what exactly they did. However I still lag on occasion for varying lengths, on average five seconds. I'm not sure what else to do.
