Frequent crashes since I19

I tried Ren's solution and it worked...for about a day. When I logged into the game the next day I had the same issue. So I figured "what the heck" I went into my CoH program folder and deleted the checksum file again...flushed DNS cache and restarted.

Viola it worked.. .

Based on this I'm concluding that deleting the checksum & flushing DNS, before each CoH session, will allow me to play with some stability. I'm still having frame rate issues..and some lag...but its an improvement.

I'm a little afraid to try Apex or TinMan as I don't want to ruin another TF for my teamates.

Meph, just out of curiosity did you disable Catalyst A.I.? From what I've read it auto adjusts your settings as needed. Ever since I disabled it my graphics performances rarely drops except on lag hill in the ITF.

River, I'm glad it's sort of working for you. Seems kinda odd to have to do this every single time you want to play. But I really do hope that the dev's are reading up on our problems and are hopefully trying to find a solution.

Can't seem to disable it in the new CCC... Can only set it to performance, quality, high quality...

That is annoying. Anyway, you can still disable it if you create a profile, then edit the xml file for that profile.

I'll try that next time I run something that seems to be hitting me with dropped frames. Deleting the checksum when I am laggy and restarting the game seems to fix things tho.

What version of CCC are you using? I just installed 10.12 and it can still be disabled. Or are you using basic mode. You must be in advanced mode in order to disable Catalyst A.I.

I'll just say since i19 I've been having frame rate issues (no real crashes per se) myself....different topic maybe but...just thought I'd say, "yeah me too!" :P

Edit: Looking above, I just disabled the Catalyst A.I. (what does it do?)....NCsoft support said to un-install the Catalyst control center in general....I may do that after this (if it doesn't help)....

I just rolled back to the 10.11 drivers that came on the disk for my card. Looks like the old CCC, but still no option to diable the Catalyst AI.

(uninstall ALL ATi software
reboot in safe mode, driver sweeper
reboot
install)

I have been having the same issue since i19. Specifically opening a menu with a static picture seems to lock up COH. Examples of this include the contacts list, Ourboros missions listed in the portal, the character ID screen, Costume screens, etc.

What I did to fix my issue was to go into Options -> Graphics and Audio, then turn off Ambient Occlusion by setting Advanced Occlusion Settings to Disabled. Apply the change then run /reloadgfx.

This seems to have stopped the issue for now.

Under 3D Settings are you looking under All Settings or just catalyst AI?

I hadn't played for over a year. I just came back to these issues. Very disappointing. I get random crashes, sometimes very quickly upon entering a zone for the first time after selecting a character, or sometimes it will go for quite a while. But my bliss never seems to last longer than 20 minutes or so.

Also my crashes do not usually kill the whole computer. The game freezes, the sound continues for a few seconds, then fades out. It will sit on the frozen picture until I alt+tab or ctrl+alt+delete. I have to Alt+Tab back to the game to get a crash box that I can use to send a report and/or close the game completely. Once I did get to play for a while and in the middle of a big battle with a team I got a blue screen o death!

All settings.

DuckDodgers, you're one of the lucky ones. Most of us never even got to send a crash report.

Mephisto, can you take a screenie and either send me a link or post it in a reply? I'm not saying I don't trust you but ever since I started building computers for myself I've been using ATI and have always had the option to disable Catalyst AI.

I'm sorry, but no. You'll have to trust me. I've been doing this stuff for 15 years. The new ATi CCC panels do not have a checkbox. The very fact that I know how to edit a profile's XML file should be enough. I have disabled Catalyst AI manually. I still had to turn all of my settings down to nothing on the STF I did last night for it to be playable.

If you need proof of ATi removing the disable checkbox, you'll just have to go to their forums - the first place I checked to see if this was normal. Plenty of threads about the new CCC and Catalyst AI not having the disable option in the GUI.

I'm not trying to be obstinate, but this thread has turned into for me:

"No check box"
"Are you sure?"
"Yep, no check box"
"Are you unfamiliar with checkboxes?"
"There's no check box"
"Maybe you aren't looking at the right checkbox"
"There is no checkbox"
"Can you take a screenie and prove that you are not an idiot?"

Check the screen shot.

I looked on the ATI forums and googled several search terms and couldn't find anything suggesting that disabling Catalyst AI was removed.

Now the above link is a screen shot taken just after a fresh install of both Windows 7 and ATI Catalyst 10.12. As you can see there is a checkbox that allows you to disable Catalyst A.I.

Also, it dawned on me that you gave three options for A.I. when in fact there are only two. Standard and Advanced. Can't say what you're looking at off hand but it doesn't seem like Catalyst A.I. to me.

Now as to why I'm so adament about Cat A.I.? Well it has to do with the fact that up until recently I've been using budget build hand-me-down systems that were, in my view, sub par to anything I had hoped I would be getting. Cat A.I. uses the cpu to analyze textures and return a function that best describes the way the texture should be processed then queries the cpu again for the mathematical equations as to how to process and show the final textures. In other words, it takes away from cpu overhead which could be better used for something else.

So are you a moron Mephisto? Never said it and don't think so. But you seem a little stuborn and set in the fact that you know what you're talking about. Something i've learned from 3d Modeling and texturing: No matter how good you think you might be, there's always something else to learn. So why not go back and take that screen shot and let's see if we can get this figured out.

I found the confusion. I have a 6970. The option does not exist for the 6xxx series. My son is running my old 4890. The option does exist for older cards.

Update:

Loaded my 4890 into my son's machine. The 10.12 drivers have Catalyst disable option on his machine.

This is from my machine with the 6970:

Also, as a reminder, I went back to the 10.11 drivers. The forums posts I have seen say that the catalyst AI disable option came with the 10.10d hotfix, and seems to be specific to the 6xxx series.

I see, guess I should've asked which card you were using instead of drivers. Didn't even know they stopped using a disable option. The whole reason ATI put in the ability to disable the AI was because users wanted it in the first place. Guess I won't be going above the 5xxx series of cards until they put it back in, or I'll just have to go to nVidia when I'm ready to upgrade. Well now that that's squared away that's the most I can help with, hopefully someone else using the 6xxx series of cards knows how to fix the lag issue. Good luck getting your issue fixed.

Heh, the worst part is I can't go any further back than the 10.11's. Anything before that can't see my card. Drives me nuts that my wife's 5770 performs so much better than my 6970. She gets to run the good drivers.

For now, I guess I'll just play at minimal settings when doing TFs. At least you helped with the crashing. Never would have thought deleting a checksum would possibly in any way affect video stability. Something definitely wrong there.

Ok, here's a quote from the AMD Game forums from a post about WoW shuttering and extremely low framerates.

Quote:
OK I had the same issue and im afraid I tried everything the only thing that fixed it was an OS reinstall, now I can run everything on Ultra getting 70+ fps and drops to 38fps turning but zero lag. Running on 1 monitor fullscreen @ 2560x1600

I installed a clean OS to a new drive, put the old drive in and copied 25GB of WoW off of it. Ran a repair on the new version and was working instantly.

I'm using 10.12 Catalyst install with the parallel processing Stream SDK.

Hope this helps!
Not sure if you want to go through a complete reinstall of your OS but it may be worth a shot.

Heh, I have an HD 5800 ATI card....having horrible frame rate issues...especially earlier today. I did the Vincent Ross arc and when you fight the 200 or so Legacy Chain mobs....I was doing a 'slideshow' (1 fps or less)...sooo annoying...

Going to have to un-install drivers and try an older version or something...grr...what did i19 do to us? hehe

Just did an ITF. Crashed once, nothing happening on the screen. Disabling Catalyst AI and dropping shadows to NONE made for a lag free experience.

The AI being forced on for the new cards is part of the issue, but there is definitely something going on with shadows with the 10.1x drivers. Everything else is maxed out completely, but I hit shadows at any setting other than none and I drop to less than 20fps.

Okay, for those with the newer cards, here's how to disabled the Catalyst AI manually:

Create a profile (i'll explain that if you need it)
Leave everything at default settings for that profile.
Close CCC.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\ATi\ACE\Profiles directory - you must have hidden files visible.
You should see your newly created profile listed there as profilename.xml
Right click and EDIT that file.
Look for this line:

Code:
<Feature name="CatalystAI">
          <Property name="CatalystAI" value="Enable" />
</Feature>
Change it to:

Code:
<Feature name="CatalystAI">
          <Property name="CatalystAI" value="Disable" />
</Feature>
Save the file.

Right click on your CCC icon in your tray. Choose "Invoke Preset." Select your newly created profile.
After this, delete your checksum and flush your DNS according to Renn's instructions.

As I said, dropping Shadows to disabled seems to make the most impact on performance in the game.

Hmm, I'll have to try...I usually don't have shadow on high/ultra just because they're not a huge thing for me but....will try it out!

Well, no luck...did what you suggested and I actually had a hard crash this time (usually don't crash...just my video 'freezes' to 1fps for a few seconds).

I did what NCsoft wanted me to do which was un-install all drivers/CCC software, then go to safe mode, run driver sweeper then install the 10.9 drivers (no CCC software).

Did that and just ran a Citadel TF...still having the issues (even with Shadows off).

le sigh.

It is almost like every person with the issue needs a totally different solution.

Indeed, so now I'm back with the 10.12 drivers...

Just solo'ing and it's an issue (depending on what toon/how much aoe I'm using it seems; and sometimes no real aoe attacks are needed....).
