Can't we do anything about Spammers
I'm going to assume that the RMT people are no longer a concern of the Devs/GMs/whoever in this game. I reported one in Atlas last night and three hours later it was still there.
I wish there was something I could do, because between this and the incessant "LOL LVL 50 IN SIXX HOWURS!!!! HUR HURHUR" spam I've been seeing, it's enough to make me want to quit. Outside of the ephemeral treatment of the boards' EULA, I know the game EULA and would be happy to banhammer any of these sewer dwellers. |
It's not good for the long-term health of the game. CoH has a pretty well established reputation as 'City of Exploits'..
In my experience, it's mainly at Atlas. Between WW's, and now in the AE and standing the crowds during Rikti/Zombie events.

In any case, I'd say that the Paragon team has done a very good job limiting spam. There was a time when the email system was virtually useless to me because I had 60 billion spam emails filling my box every time I logged on. Now, I get none at all.
YMMV.
I know exactly where you're coming from. Based on everything I have seen since I started playing, the GM's and the dev's have reacted very sluggishly (or not at all) to many different EULA violations & exploits, some of them extremely serious.

That's funny cuz whenever this game gets brought up on other MMO forums I continually see people complaining how they quit this game because the devs nerfed their favorite exploit or how our GM's banned them for some (in their opinion) "trivial" EULA violation.

I've seen (and reported) players using geometry holes and third-party 'bot' programs to AFK farm. I watched those same players continue their activity 24 hours a day for weeks with no GM action.
There are countless numbers of AE exploit arcs that are being reported by players, yet they are still there. It's been like that from day one with AE. The abusive arcs never seem to get pulled, no matter how many times they are reported. Sure, eventually, the devs get around to patching the exploit-of-the-week, after it's been allowed to run rampant for weeks. Heck, the lack of GM action is such a joke, one of the most popular current exploit arcs is filled with "Uncaring NCSoft Employee" NPC's....
I know players with literally dozens of characters PL'ed up through AE exploits. I only know of one personally that ever had action taken against them, and that was back immediately after Posi's rant about AE abuse, and it was one of the 'one-hour 50's' that was PL'ed using the worst of the original exploits.
The perception the dev team is giving off, to me at least, is that, one: they are gunshy to actually take action against paying subscribers, and two: exploiting the game is perfectly acceptable as long as you don't overdo it.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that if it's the rule and not the exception and the GMs are laying down on the job, there are avenues for escalation. If their bosses become aware that it's a legitimate concern, then it's likely that it will get higher priority.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I think the comments that we both have seen are true. As to the rest, I'm not a programmer nor do I know how the devs assign people to fix exploits so I can't honestly judge how hard it is to fix these exploits but I do think the GM's could do a heck of a lot better job enforcing the rules.

I suggest this. Pick one of those painfully obvious arcs and report it. A couple of days later, if it's not gone, PM TheOcho and raise it as a concern, that the GMs are not responding to reports of abuse. Personally, I haven't experienced this, someone blatantly abusing the system and not being dealt with at least someone quickly, within a day or two at most. I have seen people who were spamming disappear before my eyes, though.

I'd chip in on that topic, but to check first - would it be against the rules to copypaste a response from a senior rep regarding policy clarifications?
Alright, sounds safe enough then.
Me: Just a quick question - is being designed specifically for farming a valid reason for reporting a MA arc?
Them {after a "we are escalating your question..."}:
Hello,
If you think an Architect mission has been designed specifically for farming, please file feedback as such and we will investigate.
If you have other questions, please let us know!
There was RMT spam on broadcast, last night, on Virtue.
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

I will grant you that Atlas is often a cesspool of spammers, rmt folks, and walking copyright infringements...but it is pretty bad right now. Not the worst it has been, not by a long shot--but nothing to cheer about.
I'd ask for an OCR cleanup crew to hit Atlas...but the new status quo is non communication and I think I'd be wasting my time.
Again.

Whether the GMs are responsive enough or not, it's pretty easy to avoid Atlas. At least there are plenty of other options. It's not like Broadcast was ever a particularly useful resource, either -- given that so much of CoH's gameplay is instanced.
Global chat channels do almost anything you could conceivably want out of broadcast better than broadcast ever could.
I'm not trying to defend the GMs here, or refute anyone's claims as to their behavior, good or bad. For what it's worth, in my experience, the GMs have always been very responsive, polite, and (to the extent that they're able) helpful. Maybe they're resting on their laurels now that the spam-email problem has been contained. Maybe they're trying to avoid ruffling feathers among potential customers. Who knows?
But unless you're a new player who just has to jump right into the Market or AE below level 10, you basically never have to set foot in Atlas for any appreciable length of time. And you never have to look at Broadcast regardless. I can't even remember the last time I paid attention to it.
I know Atlas has a higher percentage of newer and more inexperience players in it. I'm not complaining about that.
I shouldn't have to avoid an entire zone for activities that ruin gameplay for me...that just happen to ALREADY be against the ToS/EULA and continue to be unenforced.

Do you really think they are farming all of that inf? Do you really think all of those purples an PvP recipes being sold for hundreds of millions of inf are being sold by players?
Most of us are contributing to RMT sites w/o even knowing it.
With that said, I have not seen spammer in a long time. They frustrate me because I am pretty sure they are the source of the horrible economy.
Also TonyV, the flaw in you're credit argument is the all mighty visa gift card. I use them for all of my online purchases personally. I tend to be a bit paranoid though.

I've seen those people spamming the RMT sites in Local (The fact that they are using local and not broadcast makes me think they are trial accounts). It's been a long time since I've seen any spamming at all. So while though they are annoying, it's kinda a good sign for the general popularity of the game. The RMT's think they can make money off us again.
Go us.

Yay, I now have a new reason to go to Wentworth's in Atlas Park! Having two accounts makes quick work of reporting spammers.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!
