Can't we do anything about Spammers
When I see this I can only imagine they were using someone else's account who had foolishly paid for a power level or they had subbed using the credit card of someone who had bought inf.

<pause while this sinks in>
YES! The dummy bought stuff from an RMT site for a game that was still in prelaunch open beta, and the game servers were getting erased before the game launched!
Now as I recall this guy had said in earlier posts he had bought at least three different copies of the game (minimum $150. spent) for the pre-order perks, and he also bought a lifetime subscription (another $230.). So he lost at least $380 bucks plus whatever he spent at the RMT site.
I can just imagine his Charlie Brown "AAAAAAAUUUUUUUUGH!" when he discovered his account was banned before the game went live. Stupidity like that deserves to be ridiculed.
Do you really think they are farming all of that inf? Do you really think all of those purples an PvP recipes being sold for hundreds of millions of inf are being sold by players?
Most of us are contributing to RMT sites w/o even knowing it. With that said, I have not seen spammer in a long time. They frustrate me because I am pretty sure they are the source of the horrible economy. Also TonyV, the flaw in you're credit argument is the all mighty visa gift card. I use them for all of my online purchases personally. I tend to be a bit paranoid though. |
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Just curious, You don't think that 300 billion (or was it trillion) that was accumulating during the years prior to the market being added to the game had nothing to do with it?

The flaw in your argument is that you're basically saying that if you're careful enough, you really can get a Rolex from that guy selling watches from under his coat on the street.
Let's say for the sake of argument that you're right, and you actually manage to make an RMT transaction without getting screwed over by the company you're buying from. Congratulations, you've just funded a criminal enterprise. (And trust me, it is a criminal enterprise. You don't think that RMT spamming is the only business they're in, do you?) In the process, you've also managed to support an increase in spam, screwed over your fellow players (most of whom aren't as wise as you and your extraordinarily careful self), and degraded the game experience for everyone including yourself.
Not to mention that you've also broken the EULA and, if found out by NCsoft, you will be perma-banned, and you've handed at least some personal information over to the hands of people who will do whatever it takes to make a quick buck at your expense, people who have raised scamming people to an art form.
Seriously folks, there's stupid, and then there's stupid. Dealing with RMTers falls squarely into "damn fool" territory.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I've seen those people spamming the RMT sites in Local (The fact that they are using local and not broadcast makes me think they are trial accounts). It's been a long time since I've seen any spamming at all.

On Freedom, regardless of which zone, if I'm at a market, chances are good I will see at least one Local comment about an RMT site. In Atlas, it's always at Went's, or in between the Atlas statue and Went's. I heard someone complaining about being inundated at the AE building, but I don't tend to pop in there.
Thank you, Champion.
The key thing here is THINK they can make cash.
1) We're just not big enough...notice it's only the smaller and definitely more criminally inclined sites that bother even trying to make money using CoH inf selling. The big ones (like IGE, the biggest gold etc. seller on the interwebs) simply do not bother...what would be the point, they make a ton of cash off of just WoW alone AND they know the system well enough to work around it.
2) Price crashes, you ever noticed that back when spam was actually at its height that the companies would get more and more desperate with their inf per dollar ratio. It actually did get to the point of being ridiculous of something like 5-10 million inf for the dollar (compare that to WoW where even 100k Gold would cost you a hefty chunk of real cash). Some got even more absurbed and it was 30-40 million inf per the dollar IIRC and then the spam from said company would just suddenly stop...since they had obviously given up.
The amount of work they need to put in (buying up accounts to actually transfer the goods, constantly recreating trial accounts, actually farming for the drops in order to earn the inf) was actually vastly greater than the return they were getting.
3) Unlike in other MMOs, anybody can become very rich, very quickly, heck look at the market section, almost no other MMO actually has the market players go 'here...this is how you make cash!' because normally it's a very controlled secret.
'Woo I got a purple drop/used my A-merits to make an in-demand item which sold for 150-200 million inf!
4) The new A-merit system is pretty much an anti-RMT move as it is a QoL thing. Why pay real money for in when you can simply earn an item which sells for a shedload in about...what...two hours work over 4 days? Infact if you want that item, why not go the much cheaper route and just do A-merits!
CoH is about as RMT unfriendly as a decent sized MMO can get.
The reason we see 'waves' of spam is because some little upstart company sees the game as an 'untapped opportunity' and think that we will be a gold mine for them because the big boys aren't in this market, for about two months you'll see an increase in spam and then it dies out because they finally realise that the amount of effort they put in isn't worth the return they're going to get.
So expect another month or so of spam until they give up realising that what they thought would be a gold mine turns into a money pit.
There is an upside to this in an odd kind of way.
Even on some of the low pop servers we've been seeing some RMT spam - coincidentally I reported one last night on Defiant. The fact they have suddenly re-appeared after a long absence it seems could be taken as a sign that the game is quite healthy.

The counter argument is that with the current in-game mechanics and ongoing MA exploits that it is worth their while simply because it is trivial for them to amass their product very quickly indeed.

Chat scroll had SIX SPAMS from TWO DIFFERENT RMT mules INSTANTLY.
One of them was a new company I'd never heard of.
Did the usual tagging of "Ignore Spammer" on each then commented in Local (since it was obvious that they were still laying the spam on thick) "(Die in a fire, RMT scum!)"
Now as an actual burn survivor with some large and interesting scars (stupid itch) I'm generally not one to use such a colorful phrase. But hey, OCR and the GMs aren't doing anything about this anymore. I felt entitled to a local grouse. After all, you can't play the game without seeing them anymore.
Imagine my, well...shock, when about a dozen plus people laid into me DEFENDING the RMT people. I was told that I was worse than they were, repeatedly, for (translating from the ae monkey-farming speak) "criticizing new players."
Now I don't know if they meant "new players who violate the EULA by buying inf." or "new players the RMT spammers had no vet rewards," but it would seem that the pro-RMT camp is pretty big and the anti-RMT is the minority. Maybe the pro-RMT camp is the same as the monkey farming camp, but I'm sick and tired of my personal game time being compromised by people flagrantly violating the EULA.
And for those who will soon ask, "Why bother posting this here," it's because I'm looking for commiseration. I know nothing will happen.

RMTers are players too...
Weird, very weird.

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
Thanks for the salve to my nerdrage, folks. Our only recourse is to stockpile popcorn for the reprieve, and wait for the gnashing and wailing to entertain us, for the raging heat of their nerdrage to turn our stockpiles into nutritious entertainment fodder.
Or something. For now, I have only dumpleberries for them:

I will admit this will be hilarious when the monkey poo hits the fan when the exploit is shut.
Well on the American servers...not exactly a huge amount of people in Broadcast on the EU side of things.
Seriously underling level mobs giving boss XP...anyone abusing that can't seriously complain that it was legitimate and should have remained.

Maybe if you were in AE they thought you were just talking about all of them farming monkies in general?
I was bemused on Freedom last night when I saw two RMT'ers arguing with each other at the Wentworth's in Atlas on Freedom. Each was talking about how their service was better than their competitor's. One went so far as to reveal that their competition was scamming the Chinese government by underrreporting their earnings.
I reported them as spammers and went on with my business after I got done processing the absurdity of it all.
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Ok Lightfoot...that is actually really hilarious!
RMT at its most absurd right there.
I mean, it is kind of weird because you just picture these people as log in, spam message, log out kind of deal...but to actually have a tit-for-tat arguement between them just makes it both hilarious AND kind of sad.

A quick tip, I've created a macro for /petition Spam. When I see one of them {which is frequently, since I've taken to bulk crafting} all I do is hit the macro, copypaste the spam text into the petition box {complete with the character name}, tick the "harrassment and conduct" checkbox and send it off. The whole process takes less than ten seconds and they're usually gone within a couple of minutes.
BTW, Tony, mind if I link to your post in general chat from time to time? As PSAs go, it's a pretty good one. |
