hmm... the War-Bots... Robo-team...
It's finished, at last!!
K, as some of you know, i've been attempting my first ever digital colouring project over the holidays and had decided to use the great sketch of my Earth/Ice Dom, the Sub Zero Man that Lady Cyrsei kindly did. I'm thinking now it was not the easiest character to colour as a first attempt, but then, it probably wasn't the easiest to draw either, lol, something all tights would have been a lot easier... and quicker. Nevertheless, i've learn't so much colouring this character, my style has changed about 3 times, to the point where i had to redo the right hand and power effect twice! And my graphics pad hasn't arrived yet, so this is all mouse work... phew !
Thanks again for the original sketch Lady Cyrsei, and hope you don't mind that i changed a few things, namely that i removed the face mask, (loved those ice goggles you did tho, had to keep those ), and i removed the stars on his tunic, which i had planned on replacing once i'd textured the robe, but then decided in the end to leave them off. (full size and alt background versions can be seen at my DA page, click sig for link.)
So here he is, the Sub Zero Man, Hope you like. Cheers H
Original sketch
Henri, could you please suck at something! Some of us get easily intimidated! Seriously though, this is awesome. You've added some amazing texture that I'd never have thought to try. The 3-D effects on the ice is super impressive.
I have to say it's like looking at two completely different pieces of art. Lady Cyrsei's drawing is great. You're "coloring" is like icing on a cake (and the cake is REAL!).
I'll be heading back to my color-by-number books my son has left in the bottom of his closet from when he was 2 now.
First off, I'd like to say that looks a whole heck of a lot better than anything I could do right now. It really looks great.
As for a more critical look at it, I think you might have gone a little overboard on the effects/brushes. The ice cubes splintering off look great. The ice-hair could use a different touch. As thick as the ice would be, I don't think you would get the same wobbly-but-see-through effect that you would see on the smaller ice cubes. I think there should maybe be a bit more uniformity, and a smaller spectrum of colors. The face looks amazing, but I think the skin effect again is a little over the top. I think it would benefit by having it be more... diffuse? The face looks much better than the rest of his body in regards to the shading and the frost effect. I think it's because the face is less jagged and more soft.
And of course, this is advice from an amateur, so take it with a grain of salt.
This is GREAT Henri!
It blows my mind that your still an amateur at coloring and did this good a job. The fixes you made, to his face where sweet and I love the shading on the under arm portion of leather, and the flow of the fabric of his tunic. The only constructive criticism I could give is what Bubba said above, but its to epic to really find fault with it at all.
Thanks for picking my piece to color, I love seeing my work pop into life like this, and the interpretations of the different artists.
/hugs and keep up the great work!

Thanks for the comments guys, and appreciate the feedback. If i'm honest, i was dubious about my ice skin effects too. I'm hoping to do another Sub Zero Man picture soon, think i'll review my techniques for that one.
For now tho, here's a piece i've just finished of my Rad/DP Def, British Hero. This is my first all digital picture, and first use of my graphics pad, lots of firsts . Full size and alternative version (lights off) at my DA page, siggy click.
Hope you like it, cheers H.
That is your first digital ever? With a tablet?!
You sonuva-! Do you know how long it took me to even do just lineart fully digital?!
God-damned mutha-fragging prodigies....

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Cheers PS, I do love the AC, amongst many others... hmm, maybe British Hero could be a car collector, then i can draw all my favourites with him, yay, '73 Mustang Mach 1, here we come!! And glad you like the toon too, painting him has inspired me to play him a bit more
Techbot, thanks for... that. Hehe, no seriously, glad you like it. I was a pencil/paper artist years ago, and i've also had some experience with colour shading and stuff from painting 25mm miniatures for a while so have had 'some' experience, but yeah, this is the first time i've painted from scratch digitally, and the tablet only arrived Tuesday, but i find it a lot easier to use than the mouse. Well, with the the mouse, i'm finding it easier to do a lot of the functions with the mouse, but draw on the pad.
Anyway, i was going to take a break for a few days after this piece, as my pen finger is actually numb at the moment, but couldn't resist... next piece's background is 50% done...
Well, shoot, that's awesome.

What tablet did you end up getting? I bought Jr. one last year but just the cheap Wacom. His problem is that it's pretty small and he has a problem with the disconnect between hand and screen. Was wondering if I should get him a larger tablet.
Anyway great job again!

Henri gave the name of the tablet earlier but it's not a Wacom (think it's a brand just sold overseas).
@Henri: Overall your coloring is very impressive for someone just starting out and you seem to be picking up things quickly at the outset so kudos to you.
I do have some con/crit, since you mentioned wanting some:
On the first piece I'll just talk general coloring/lighting since the lines are not yours and I have no technical experience with GIMP the app.
The most important thing I would point out with the lighting is to mind your light source(s) and it's direction.
When figures are drawn against a wide open sky they are usually lit either from behind (they are between the viewer and the light source), unidirectional (light diffused through clouds from all sides at once) or from various direct sources (the sun, power fx, reflections etc) or some combination. Since you have some really hot spots (nearly pure white on a black surface) it suggests a directional source that is very close by but the light/dark areas you have seem to conflict with this...
i.e. on his ribs near the buckles a very bright light is coming from camera left but the green waist cloth right
below is unaffected by it and the thigh lower down has a deep black shadow.
Or here where there is white over blue suggesting light is striking the left calf muscle but
the right one is blue over white... it should be nearly the same light striking both.
Here there is top down lighting on the shoulder cloth and what looks to be light from the power fx striking the right side of the arm but there is a hard black on the quadriceps muscle below that should be hit from both of these sources. There is also light striking the Vastus Medialis (large top muscle on the inner side that runs to the knee) and adductor area (series of small inner thigh muscles near the groin) from different angles but the light hitting the VM is not affecting the A and the light hitting the A is not affecting the VM.
As a whole there is a lot of good stuff going on here but the parts seem individually lit (and in conflict with each other) with little thought given to a cohesive whole.
I would suggest at some point after you put down your flats but before you start your lighting/shading you take a few moments and decide where the light is coming from and what areas should be lit... maybe even make a layer with little arrows that you can turn on and off periodically to check if the stuff you just added conforms to the light scheme you planned.
I hope you find my comments useful, you're off to a great start Henri... keep after it man.

Ahh, you got me. This is why i asked for your crit, you know your stuff mate They are individual parts, i look for examples of what i want to draw and take reference from that. But i think i'm sticking too close to the reference, rather than adapting it to the situation in my piece. I mean, I'm trying to do it, i'm just not doing it right. Will do better Thanks and appreciation as always.

It's on the version with the headlights off.
Hi everyone. Not posted anything in here for ages but thought i'd share a digital art piece i've just finished. It's kind of to celebrate my first level50 (and first incarnate a suppose, tier 2 so far, need a few more shards for level shift )
So here's the man... erm... bot himself:

First impression...
oh crap, the FArt just got tougher.
There are a few technical aspects that could use some attention and/or tweaking, light pathing (like on the inner thighs) is probably the most
prominent but this looks to be another big step forward for you Henri. This break-neck speed you are learning at is impressive.
Not only are there tangible improvements I see over previous pieces but the intangible stuff has gotten
better as well, this image has a great presence and impact immediately when you see it.
P.S. Think the cloudscape could stand a little work, visually it is very prominent
and keeps grabbing the attention away from the central figure. The patterns
of light and darkness don't conform to the rest of the piece in my opinion.
Beautiful! Wonderfully rendered Henri. I had not even noticed the background without looking for it. The armour structure really stands out, great pose and colours too.
