AE Removal?
I think the AE is one of the best features of the game - but it needs some way of filtering out the farms and exploit missions.
|
A handful more user-defined filters would make finding what you're after (whatever that might be) much simpler and less annoying.
they should've also taken the beta advice of replacing the 'star' system with an option to like, period. So you either give an arc props or just walk away.
anyway, I like MA. I like it for farming, I like it for stories...it's not an either/or proposition. If the powers that be *don't* want farmers using it they need to completely rewrite the rewards system, because it's WAY more efficient than 'real' missions for generating high value goods.

The market, however, would not crash. It would simply become a "truer" representation of actual market forces uninfluenced by AE providing means and motivation to NOT use the market as intended.
|
The intended use of the market as best as i understand it is to provide players a convenient means of exchanging influence for other in game assets while destroying a small amount of the influence. Some PvP IOs tend to get sold outside the market because they go for prices that are over the market's cap, but that has less than nothing to do with AE. Do you mean that AE users don't use the market at all?
Inf tends to become less valuable over time in large part (IMO) due to the much higher rate of inf generation compared to everything else once a character hits 50, but that also has nothing to do with AE. How does AE enable unintended market use, whatever that may be?
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
It's things like this that really irritate me about the AE. Like I said before, there are hundreds of great stories out there, there are dozens of great authors that consistently put out fun arcs for others to play and get none.
I do my best to try and promote the best arcs out there, even going so far as to offer over a billion inf to the winners and I barely get any notice. Some random poster makes a comment about the exploiters and in just a few days gets more attention than what I've been trying to get attention for weeks. And if you would rather support the authors rather than the exploiters, then go nominate great arcs that you've played. tinyurl.com/2010PlayersChoice
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that people who gained xp through known exploits in AE had that xp revoked when the exploit mission was removed? Or at least, at one point? Doesn't that stop those exploit farms from being actually profitable for power leveling?
I speak only from articles read online, since this isn't a factor of the game I participate in.

I wasn't aware of this fact, and how could they evne trakc how much EXP was earned? and if they even had an exploited Arc, they probably have enough 50s, and enough friends that, that one toon will be 50 soon enough, even though that exp was revoked. But, I have never heard of this system of EXP being revoked.

Here's one: http://www.eldergame.com/2009/05/use...ruby-slippers/ - there's others, but I don't want to go searching for a bunch of old articles just to prove I'd heard of it, lol
You should have to have a 50 BEFORE you can do AE... like an unlock...
|
I'm a 51 month vet -- my highest level character is 37. I play tons of alts (so many powersets, costumes, etc. to work with ). I'm in no hurry to max out my characters.
I love the AE -- for story purposes and alternate advancement, especially when I hit one of those pockets where the available dev content is stuff I've done repeatedly or don't care for. Obviously, I fail as a powerleveler since I have no 50s and actually like developing my characters over time.
The AE is great fun. Some misuse it, some use it for good stories, and some use it just to go beat up baddies for fun. It adds a lot of dimension and variety to the game. There should be no level restriction.

From what I understand that was only done to the 'worst' offenders and was rare. Now this is all speculation from the boards, so there is not telling how accurate it is. But considering Posi's rant on the subject the rumors do seem to make sense.
Back when AE first hit the Rikti Comm Officer exploit was the big thing. Some people were getting from 1-50 in a couple hours. From what I have gathered some of the worst offenders had those characters XP removed or taken away. Not sure of the specifics or of any specific person this happened too.

well, and here I thought that was pretty much the perfect deterrant, too! Use it all you want, they'll just take it away when it gets fixed!
|
I've quite happily used the MA to do that with a few characters, mostly EU side. I haven't seen any of the new raft of exploits though, haven't been on any AE farms in absolute ages as I've had more interesting things to do.
I really like the AE stuff. I would probably play it more, except for two problems:
Finding a good arc to play. Either I'm really terrible at searching for the things that I like to play, or there is something wrong with the search system.
The custom critters are really hard on my lower level or squishier characters. They frequently have defenses that are hard overcome with TO enhancements slotted, and they frequently have more mez effects than the normal crittters. I dislike being pushed into using higher level melee types to compensate.
I would hate to see it go away. I would rather see it improved.
As for AE farms, I've never seen the developers come out against farming. I've only seen them speak against what they consider exploits where the rewards were unbalanced against risk. There are story arcs on the AE that have 'farm' in their title that have been there for a while. They haven't removed those.
Powerleveling has been a part of the game for a long time, and again, I've never seen anything from Paragon Studios forbidding it. I used to start getting /tells asking me to 'bridge' as soon as I had a character hit 45. They added super side kicking which eliminated the need for a 'bridge' character. I believe they only concern themselves with exploits.
Finally, I don't care what anyone else does, as long as they aren't trying to do it to me. They paid their fees, they can have fun their way if they want to. As long as they don't break the rules, and that is up to NCSoft and Paragon Studios to deal with. I don't pay my fee to try and interpret or enforce their rules.
So what exactly is the problem here?
Ah, I missed the special arrogance of the CoH forumites when I was on my break from the game.

I never did anything to you, why do you say such things about me?
You didn't? You were talking about someone else? You sure about that? I'm posting on the forum, therefore I'm a forumite, aren't I? Therefore you called me arrogant. What did I say to deserve that?
Are you better than me? Are you smarter? Are you humbler? Are you nicer? Do you know anything about me? Why do you insult me? Will you apologize? Will you admit you were wrong about me?
Have you a mirror? Can you use it? Do you understand the message I'm trying to convey?
Then I would have dropped out long ago.

I find that to be very good though! Because I don't enjoy this game anywhere as near and dear as I used to. I wish I could. I will most likely move on to other games very soon, but this game is still a very fun game to play in my opinion. IO's definitely added an edge to this game I wanted when they came out.
But besides that, Ive been wondering, does anyone have any specific AEs they enjoy, or AEs they made they want others to enjoy? AE is definitely an area i have lacked spending time in. Ive stuck to doing PUG's most of the time, occasionally AE farming (I will not lie I have done my share), but i have yet to do a full arc.
Please throw some names for us to enjoy!
What kind of arrogance does it take to make a statement like this?

I would rather play in a graveyard than freedumb. I logged into that server for the first time, and what's the first thing I hear on broadcast? Someone with a Dragonball Z name asking for an AE farm, offering money. *shudders*
That said, Protector is no longer a graveyard. Many people, myself included, were simply bored and doing other things while waiting for GR to release. Since then, I'd say the servers are at a high it hasn't seen in years. EDIT: Which isn't saying that much, actually, heh. Let me rephrase that to say it's hit the yellow status quite regularly since GR release, and still is. I haven't seen the yellow status on Protector before except for double xp weekends. |

Oh, redside. Yeah, redside seems to have a small fraction of the population of blueside on most servers. Add to that that i know many people who are more likely to use /hide when playing villains. Personally i never hide and welcome PuGs on either side, but i know quite a few who don't feel the way i do.
|
Have you tried your server's global chat channels for teaming and general socializing?
I haven't, not sure how, Protector is just a graveyard, one of the two servers at the moment with only green status not 2 dot status.

What do you think would happen if the game went back to being like pre-ae times and they just removed AE entirely from content. Other than the fact the market would most likely crash, and MANY noobs (no offense), would leave the game because they would have to venture outside Atlas Park for the first time in their lives, Any comments?

It gives my characters a quick means of picking up the occasional rare salvage I don't already have in the bank and refuse to pay stupid prices for.
As for the rest, /shrug, my 22 tanker is halfway towards earning her +3 def gladiators doing tip missions

I have NO regrets about skipping levels 1-20, NONE WHATEVER and would do it again if I could. So not everyone got the ban-hammer on this issue.
It also allowed me to experiment with sets without havigto invest 6 months into them. A lot of people got deleted. No harm done, I experimented the fast and easy way.
Those were the days.
Threads like this make me a sad panda... not just because of what's being said, but what is behind it.
I'm going to echo Bubbawheat. Why is 'AE == farm' accepted as fact for some/most people and the actual stories ignored entirely? There are hundreds of awesome story arcs out there (putting most 'official' story arcs to shame, IMO), and most of them never get the chance to be played. Some authors might pour hundreds of hours of their time and creativity into creating a great arc that will get ~5 plays in a year, if that. Ask people in the AE building if they want to run a story arc and you'll get some blank stares, if that. But create a farm and watch the numbers soar!
See this thread (stickied, even!) for over 140 high-quality arcs. Nominate and vote in http://www.tinyurl.com/2010PlayersChoice for this year's Player's Choice awards. There's a huge wealth of great content out there in AE, even if most players don't care about it.
The Mission Architect is one of the most unique and awesome tools on the MMO scene currently. It needs to be improved and expanded, not scrapped.
