Breast Size in Game: Too Big?

Ok, so weird topic, but 9 times out of 10 when I make a female character I select "Athletic" then leave her at that. I don't increase the Chest slider, but I don't decrease it either.

So, a RL female friend who plays the game is constantly riding me about how HUGE all my characters "boobs" are to the point that usually it ends in me telling her to F off.

So, the reason for this topic is to get the opinion of other players, male and female, on whether the default settings are too big or what?

Should I pay more attention to my characters breast size than I do? Make them smaller, because that's "more realistic" or what?

Is it not possible that she's giving you grief because she knows it gets under your skin?

If you're concerned, use the slider. That's what it's there for. Shove it to the left and you probably won't ever hear about it again.

No, I'm pretty sure she's not complaining just to get under my skin, I think she seriously thinks I slide the chest to 100% on every character I make (granted, I do have a few I have increased it on, but not the majority she insists upon every time she starts in about it). She just got Sims 3's new breast sliders, and is telling me how much I'll hate that I can't make "grotesquely huge boobs"

Hmm. I'd have to say that someone else, then, is overly sensitive regarding this topic and your response of telling her to "f off" should probably be given sooner than later.

Yes, I expected my fellow males to add fuel to her fire. I am male, however I don't 9 times out of 10 make them bigger. It's almost like she sees it in players like you, then takes it out on ME even though I'm not guilty of it 90% of the time.

You are pretty intense in your inaccurate generalization of men. I would disagree with you quite vehemently.

Yeah, I honestly think alot of it is what I just posted a second ago. I think she sees the many horrid offenses, and then takes it out on me because I'm male and making female characters, I MUST be guilty.

I'm sure I'm among those adding to her issues. When I make a female character, most of them, unless concept dictates otherwise, work like this:

Shoulders to the right
Chest to the right
Waist to the left
Hips to the right... or left... but all the way either way
Legs go all the way up. (Cuz she just had them lengthened.)

My wife generally doesn't mess with the slider as she likes a more accurate depiction of her toons.

It is funny tho because you can pretty well tell that a guy is behind some of the female toons out there by there huge chests and skimpy outfits.

Hey to each their own, although maybe you friend is jealous? Just sayin

Yeah, I have 3-4 characters I've done that with. She always throws THOSE in my face with the "ALL YOUR CHARACTERS" tag.

Well, while I've never met her IRL, I've known her online for a long time, and she's always telling me about how much of a pain big breasts are, so it's not jealousy in that sense.

As for telling, yeah you pretty much can. I try to not be quite as bad, but apparently I'm still horrible with the majority of my characters at 50% is HUGE.

Ok, time for a few pics. Here is Viper Widow. Her scales are "Athletic" straight up.

Here is one she always seems to think is 100% when she's only 50%. Must be the jacket makes them look bigger? I don't know...

Last, just to show I DO have some that are big, here is one The Dastardly Mad Psychic Violet...

I tend to dial it down on my female characters. I always thought the default chest setting for athletic was just a little too big for an athlete anyway (except maybe "pro" wrestlers (or pro "wrestlers")). Depends on the costume too, though. With a jacket or trenchcoat, it's not so noticeable, but anything tight and, well, they're right out there like eggs on a plate.

Edit: Just saw your last post. Really? People think the one in the leather jacket is big? (...or two in the jacket - whatever.) She actually looks much smaller to me than the other two.

Man here. And my answer is "smaller, please."

Most of my female characters, I adjust the slider to the left... if the default is 50%, then I'm usually setting it at 25% to as low as 1%. I have made a couple characters intended to have the big bewbs, and I leave the slider at default for them... because that's plenty big already.

Anything over default looks hideously unrealistic. MAYBE... just maybe... if the devs did something to the character model so that the breasts look more realistic when they're bigger, then maybe I could see going bigger. But as it is right now, they just look like beach balls shoved under tights.

Yeah, she's one of the characters this friend mentions by name as one of my 'offenses' regularly. She's at 50% also.

As for your original post, I can understand that, however am I a "typical male obsessed with big breasts" because I don't dial it down?

Thus staying true to the superhero comics genre.

Yeah, but her reply to that would be a comment about how most comic book artists are big-breast obsessed men.

Power Girl... comics' poster girl for "Bigger is Better"

Fortunately, although most comics artists seem to render super hero women as larger than life, they don't treat ALL comic book heroines like they do her.

I don't get this fascination that some players have with "realism".

City of Heroes, as a an entertainment media inspired by comic books, borrows a touch of artistic style from that genre.

In the comic book genre, one thing that really seems to be quite bold is gender bias. Main characters are often sexualized using various methods, be it male or female.

Females are usually portrayed using athletic, feminine bodies with exaggerated breasts, narrow waists, and wider hips, along with long legs decorated with very skimpy clothing that seem incredibly impractical.

On the same hand, males are usually portrayed using very built, toned bodies with heavy muscular structure, broad shoulders, heavy chest, and narrow hips, and there is usually a big bulge in their crotch area; especially if they're wearing tights.

It's an artistic choice. What is so incredibly wrong with that? As a female gamer, I have characters with a whole bunch of different breast sizes. I have no issues with small breasts, or big breasts.

It's a style of drawing and representing characters that often goes hand in hand with "female/male sexualization in media" which is a huge topic on its own.

Whether or not male/female sexualization in comic books is a good or bad thing, that's up to extensive debate.

But that's the comic book style of drawing for you. And CoH adapts to it perfectly. And I see nothing wrong with it.

I just read Anarchist Kitten's last post, and it's exactly what I meant.

This topic would eventually lead to female sexualization in video games, and it's a huge, huge, obnoxious debate mostly invoked by uptight feminists thinking "media is objectifying their bodies".

If your friend can't get over the artist style in a video game and feels offended, or feels like cartoon artists are men with an obsession for big breasts, then I'd have to say that she's is either probably very insecure about her own body image or she spends way too much time caring about what media portrays as the "perfect female figure".

In both case, chances of her being convinced by any argument is minimal.

Does your friend also complain that there's no mullet option for females, or no option to make them chubby, or no option to give them an "Average" face (all the options are either suppsoed to be good looking or are exageratingly ugly), or...

...No? She's just commenting on the boob size?

I say start bringing the slider all the way to the right and use tops that show cleavage (Tank top, Witch Corset), just to cheese her off =)
