Does ignoring a spammer bring them to the attention of the Devs?

I run into spammers in the Atlas WW all the time. The latest one was a jumble of random letters for a name, and they were advertising a PL website:

' Hi,this is www.--------.com, we have lower price10% bonus and better service .1000 m +10% bonus = $9.88 in 5 mins.Powerleveling (CoH) 1 - 50 = $40 in 12 hours.If you have any questions,Pls contact with our 24*7hours Livechat!'

Since they have been chased out of email (thank heaven!), is this their last refuge, and is there any possible way that we can finally be rid of these blood-sucking leeches?

The devs don't resolve spammer issues, the GM's do. And what you do to report them is simply type /ignorespammer, or click on their name and choose ignore spammer. That automatically adds them to your ignore list and generates a spammer petition that gets sent to the GM's

Simply putting spammers on /ignore dosen't bring them to the GM's attention, however petitioning them does. Stick around long enough and you see them get banhammered. Glorious!

Unless you petition or summon a GM, a certain number of spammer complaints must be received by GMs to result in the same action.

Which quickly happens. Spammers by definition contact as many people as possible in order to advertise their sites. As a result they are forced to keep making new accounts as the old ones get shut down.

There's actually something that happens? Dang, I'm tempted to hang out in Atlas just to see that happen. Unless someone has demorecorded it and put it on YouTube.

It's a problem that has been around since EQ, possibly before. If there were a way to get rid of them completely, it would have been done by now. Unfortunately, there are no ways to totally lock them out without inconveniencing a lot of innocent people in the process. "Throwing out the baby with the bathwater", so to speak.

And unlike games that leave corpses, you don't find any interesting ads like the site spelled out in gnome corpses

And just to make sure you're aware -

/ignore is different than /ignorespammer (! Ignorespammer auto corrects/finishes on my iPhone).

/ignorespammer does require a threshold (enough reports) to be reached for a petition to file, so if the spammers are being vulgar (/ignorespammer is for any spamming, not just money sellers) also /petition under "TOS/Harassment" for faster action.

Nothing special happens just a forced disconnect and they can't log back on because the accounts banned.

Now Guild Wars has their Avatar of Death that busts forth from the ground and kills the botters and RMT spammers which also bans their account. Funny as heck to see it happen.

Here.

I've also watched for peak spammer times for certain companies, and invited Mod8 to visit the location at the requisite time. He's pretty awesome about things like that--sent some GM_Goons along to kneecap people.

Friday October 22 at around 9pm PST in Atlas Park, inside WW on virtue server. I sent a petition so I have an email track.

We totally need to get Posi or one of the other Devs to intervene and do something awesome like that. Redside, have Mako or Ghost widow perma-kill the toon. Hehe.

Just one of the very many reasons that we need a Mod8 fanclub. =)

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

The heroes won't let mod8 have a fanclub, for fear that his dark power will grow.

Dr. Aeon and the Television don't support it either, but that's cause the only boss they'll work for is Numero Uno.

my vote for this game is to have rularuu the ravager spawn and kill the spammer, that would be epic

Personally I think seeing Lusca's tentacles burst forth from the ground surrounding the RMTer and then Spanking him to death would reek of Awesomesauce.

Now if Rularuu the Ravager had a giant mace we could call the BanHammer . . .

How about Mako's shark thing come up out of the ground and eat them?

Or better yet, drag the offending party underground like the way the Tier 2 demons unspawn?

All that happens is that they disconnect without displaying a countdown.

Now, when someone gets their named changed to 'Generic 012345678', you can actually see the change as it occurs.

And the change to All-In-White; All-in-Tights when the costume offends, as well.

You stole my idea.

Additional ideas:

1. Mods/GM sets some preferences on their own screen so they don't have to set complicated commands each time. One click bans!

2. Subject of ban gets:

a. a large dark "shadow" around them which quickly gets smaller.

b. GM drops from the sky with extra large Carnie Strongman Hammer (it's an in game reward for a badge). Should be about 3x as large as regular hammer.

c. Huge "Footstomp" impact graphic around target (who dies immediately). Huge text above says "BAN HAMMERED", using text like with Containment or DB Weakened.

d. GM gets choice of emotes afterwards: /em various dances, /em champion, /em teabag.

e. GM gets choice of various models to use with the ban: Harlequin, Jack In Irons, Council Werewolf, Ghost Widow (Ghost Widow with huge hammer = funny), Scirroco, Miss Liberty, Statesman, maybe a few more.

f. GM then engages Jet Pack and rockets back up to the sky.

Human Nature being human nature, I could see people wanting to end thier hero's account with mass spam/offensive behaviour if they got a cool ending like ghost widow taking them out.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Spammers are getting bolder. I have my e-mail settings to "friends & SG-mates only". But just a few days ago, I got a TELL from a spammer while standing in Talos WW. I'm so glad the devs found a way to enable copy/paste a little while back... made it that much easier to send "documentation" right in my petition.
