Hobbit Officially Greenlit

As many other threads have pointed out, lots of trouble has followed this film since its first announcement. Lets hope it sheds its bad luck before filming.

...and Peter Jackson is officially directing. I get the feeling he's burnt out on the subject, also lots of people didn't like Peter's take on Lord of the Rings. Personally I can't see anyone else doing this project.

Here's me with my fingers crossed.

Hmmm...while I don't personally find the LotR to be movies I can rewatch.

I did find them to be good films, and more exciting than the books for sure (The Hobbit, I loved. LotR trilogy, I found boring), they're just not movies I can really sit through after viewing them once ont he big screen.

They better get someone good to voice Smaug. He's my favorite character in that whole book.

A vocal minority maybe. It's hard to argue with a Trilogy of almost 3 hour films that still put everyone in their buts and won a clean sweep at the Academy Awards (plus tons of other awards).
Peter Jackson changed some things, but he only did what he had to do to make them good films.
Or if you're talking about the people who felt it was too long. Meh, it's a saga, it's supposed to be long.

Personally, I consider the films to be the best Trilogy in history.

Now, let's hope that the Hobbit can be as good.

Nothing wrong with Titanic really, it's just "cool" to hate it.

What? Didn't you hear? They're getting Trey Parker to do the voice. It's going to sound something like this.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

"Respect mah authoratah!" Smaug said to little Bilbo Baggins.

After reading the series, I kind of wished they had made all the Harry Potter movies 3 hours long. I know most of em are like 2 and a half hours anyway but when you watch the movies after reading the book it seems like they could have been served batter with some transitional scenes to smooth out the edges.

Im intrigued by the casting choice to play Bilbo. Martin Freeman who played Arthur Dent in Hitchikers guide.

So you mean you'll put down your rock, and I'll put down my sword; and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?

Oh bother, I've left Bag End without a handkerchief, a decent walking stick, or my towel!

Hasn't this been greenlit before, or was that just all "we're kind of probably/maybe/sort of working on it?"

Anyway, I like hearing that Peter Jackson is directing for sure. I think the LOTR books are much better than the movie trilogy, but they did manage to get a large amount of the movies right. A few things bug me (mostly the elves, Faramir, and Denethor), but for a book to movie translation, they're quite good and I like rewatching them.

I'm still not keen on this being two movies long and being in 3D. I can't see 3D adding much of anything to the experience, and I'm not sure how that will pan out for home viewing. And to reiterate, still don't see a need for two movies, either.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that people who did it mostly right three times before can do it again. I feel reasonably sure that Smaug and all the settings will look great, considering Jackson will probably have many of the same people working for him again: biggest worry is how the story is worked out, and how the characters feel in the translation.

John Rhys-Davies is my guess.

Yuck, it's gonna be in pseudo-3D as well.

3-D seems like kind of a weird choice for this movie. Unless they are not planning to use forced perspective like they did in LoTR, or they have a way of shooting it so that the 3-D doesn't give away the fact that Bilbo is standing 10 feet behind Gandalf in order to appear smaller.

Yeah, good point. This will be a challenge.

Didn't see this back then. GG, I know they're "adding" more things to make a second movie, and don't really care. Stringing any extra stuff together from appendices or Peter Jackson's rear to make a second movie or expand the focus of The Hobbit doesn't look to improve the story in any way for me, and I love The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I love the world those books are in, but don't want just anything strung together. Heck, I think they could make some stories from The Silmarillion work, but I know it would be hard.

Blech, and I can't see anything good coming from 3d for these, either.

I agree with you Mr. G Pilgrim, but I am intersted in seeing how they do the Witch King of Murkwood, and how they tie it in with LOTR.

Still, I'm fond of the Original Hobbit Cartoon.
