Must have been for that horrible Karate Dance emote...

All joking aside however this is very bad news, like there aren't enough Jobless people in this country.

However I am going to now set the "How soon will this thread get locked" timer.

/begin count down....

Layoffs are just a reality in the gaming industry, and very often not as bad (or as unexpected) as people make them out to be, especially given the tenous nature of design studios. That is to say, a lot of MMO projects are made possible by investments, and those investments rarely pay off any steady profit. As funding vacillates--very often at the end of a particular project, such as an expansion pack--layoffs are simply an accepted reality.

BAB is one hell of an animator and I'm absolutely certain he'll find good creative opportunities in another design team. I've read that thread the OP linked, most of it anyway. There are a lot of fine, elegiac sentiments there, all of which I share. But also a whole lot of misconceptions, pointless assumptions and fallacious arguments about the nature of corporate culture or the reasoning behind the layoff or things like that. So, just be careful.

I guess he really will be backalley brawler now.

I'm actually surprised no body said "its a Nemesis Plot" yet. O wait, maybe they did and I haven't found it yet...

Since I don't feel like going through the whole thread, looking for a Red name post... did they actually confirm it included BABs now?
Last I saw was theOcho's post about confirming the article (which states "possibly including BABs") was correct. >.>

Ah, that'll do it alright. :/
And yes, he'll be missed - let's hope whoever winds up replacing him will be able to fill his shoes well.

Actually, that's not new at all. It's just a reference to the fact that the in-game character Back Alley Brawler is retired. (Well, mostly.)

Misconceptions, pointless assumptions, and fallacious arguments could be avoided if open discussion could be had rather than threads getting locked and/or posts getting deleted.

You mean everywhere, it's not just the gaming industry that gets hit by it. Just ask the folks who "used" to work at Saturn dealerships just before it's final collapse. It's a sucky generation to live in at the moment.

Bah, it'll get better. We'll have another 80's I am sure.

Not really. Layoffs after an MMO expansion release are pretty common. Its like hiring seasonal help for Christmas, although Walmart just hired a massive amount of people only a few months ago none of those people were brought in under the guise of a permanent position.

The Back Ally Brawler thing sounds like there was some conflict going on between BAB's and NCSoft, so NC brought someone else to work on animations and then BAB's unknowingly trained his replacement.

From everything I have read that is the impression I'm being given. I really don't think there is any huge controversy or something to be majorly concerned about, it's just business being business.

MMO's are getting hammered by social gaming like the garbage on facebook, I can see why the guy got laid off.

If I was to say who made the most important changes in this game over the last 5+ years I would have to say it was him. He is probably under a no compete clause so we might not see him around for some time , but given his experience, the guy has all the stroke to be an A-list dev wherever he wants to go. Cryptic Studios needs some help, I hope he goes there, if anyone can pull them out of the toilet he could. I can say with 100% certainty that BAB's always had the players best interest at heart, and in the MMO business that is an extinct animal.

EDIT: this is coming from a guy who never has anything good to say about anyone.

Or knowingly.

With his skills it won't take long for employment to find him.

Hey look, old news is old.

Being honest this doesn't need to get started again. We know BaBs has left, we do not know if he was part of the layoffs or not for certain. Most likely those layoffs were temporary people pulled on the help get GR out the door on time and now they're on the i19.

The studio is still 60 people strong.

This is not doom.

No this is not doom.

And something tells me that NCSoft would not make him train his replacement without telling him, and then unceremoniously give him the boot. BaB has been here forever and a day, and I don't believe that NCSoft would treat someone instrumental in making one of it's games like that. I also believe that BaB is a professional, and that if NCSoft told him "It's not working out, we're letting you go in six months and we'd like you to train your replacement" his reply would be "No problem. It's been fun, sorry it's coming to an end."

We all have to do our part to be positive and support this game, and MMO's in general, stop the real enemy:

SOCIAL GAMING !

I..DON'T.. like this...

neither should you, because quality games suffer.
