True Grit 2010
Looks like Josh Brolin will be able to be in a good western movie.
Looks promising, and they've got a solid cast.
I could never take John Wayne seriously. All I ever saw was a pudgy doughboy. That sir, is no pudgy doughboy.
Way to many alts.
No. Just no.

The novel was brilliant - the original film version was pretty meh. If they hadn't given John Wayne a make-up Oscar for it (that he should have won for The Searchers or Red River) I doubt anyone would remember it much today. The great job the Cohens did with No Country for Old Men makes me hopeful that this version might get it right.
at first i was all Hell No! But after that trailer i'm kinda excited to see it.
So basically Hollywood has finally realized that they're full of idiots. But instead of giving good writers a chance they're just going to remake every single good movie from the 60's and 80's.
I hate Hollywood.

Well, when you spend millions of dollars making a movie, you'd like some sort of guarantee that you're going to get your money back. It used to be that your guarantee was your movie stars. Names like Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne would sell tickets and put butts in seats. Those days are over. Very few modern stars guarantee ticket/DVD sales. In fact, some stars have the opposite effect since they don't seem to understand that insulting 50% of their potential audience isn't a good way to fill seats. The remake of True Grit is actually a good example of this. I've been hearing from people who would normally be very interested in this movie that they won't go see it because of Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.
So with the waning influence of movie stars, Hollywood is looking for a new guarantee and right now probably the best guarantee of sales is making a remake of or sequel to a successful property. Daniel Craig and Chris Pine might not sell tickets but the James Bond and Star Trek names do.

Coen Brothers remake True Grit. If it wasn't for the Coen Brothers, I would be outraged but because it's them I will give it a chance.

No, no, a thousand times no! You do NOT remake the Duke! Here endeth the lesson.
Not sure. So far the Coen Bros. remakes have been their weakest work.

I'm torn between outrage that they would remake a John Wayne classic, and excitement over a movie that looks like it would be a fantastic western, if only it wasn't a remake of a John Wayne movie. But there's also some hope that maybe if this is successful they'll also find a way to remake Rio Bravo and keep the original feel. I'd kind of like to see a modern take on that movie (being my favorite Duke movie ever) with the current crop of actors.

ur = This is not a word.
I think it's pretty clear that Hollywood ran out of seriously new ideas maybe as much as 20 years ago.
