What does FREEM! mean?

"FREEM!" was a game tip, which I thought was a stupid "tip" to have when it doesnt explain what it is. whats it mean?

One of the April Fools jokes was a new sound setting that had words appear on screen instead. So hitting someone you'd get 'kapow' or whatever, and one of the energy blast visual sound effects was FREEM!

Which became a meme.

If I recall, one of the April's fools jokes was the removal of Sound FX from City of to be replaced with Visual Sound FX, as in, the Batman esque "Bam, pow, etc" and there was a screenshot of Energy Blast going 'Freem!'

I'm a little nebulous on the details but I think it became some sort of meme on the boards that has currently fallen out of use, or just not present in the places I frequent.

I'm sure someone will explain it better than me but it was part of an April Fool's joke a few years ago where the Devs claimed they were going to remove the sound effects from the game in favor of visual comicbook styled text-based popup "sounds" on the screen kind of like the silly ones you saw on the old 60's era Batman TV show. As I recall "FREEM!" was one of the more popular ones the Devs came up with as an example for that.

It's my pet name for my belly button. Not sure why it's a game tip.

Paragon Wiki still has the whole "announcement".

It was never implemented, just had some mock ups done for the April 4th screenshots.

They never made City of Heroes: The Golden Age text adventure MMO either.

It was never a feature Dz, it was just an announcement as an April Fools joke. It never appeared ingame.

Much to our disappointment. You know your player base is immature when you put something like that up for an April Fool's prank and half your players are mad that you weren't serious.

It was apparently also one of the more 'successful' ones in conning the players into thinking it was real, given the initial amount of panic it spawned on the forums. (Contrasted to the following year's joke, I think it was, when the game released its "Golden Age" expansion.)

I think that was also the first April Fool's joke they'd ever done on that scale, but I could be wrong - I don't remember a game-wide announcement like that prior to "Visual Sounds."

AC2 had visual sound effects. They had settings for no violence (no blood) extreme violence (lots of blood) or cartoon violence (boom! pow!).

Really, that would be a very natural thing for a hero game. ^_^

You don't have to go to paragonwiki to find the announcements, they're still all available in the site's announcements.

2010: City of Sidekicks
... which I still think would be a funny defender set. Think of it:

- Sidekick screeches in terror, team gets major buff rushing to the rescue.
- A "major distraction" that debuffs the foe, but sets aggro on the defender
- an auto-vengenance when the above power goes to its obvious conclusion
- A general team buff because... let's face it, everyone looks better in comparison to that dork...

2009: City of Heroes- the Golden Age
Another I'd love to have... if for no other reason than it's the only way I'd have any skills useful to the CoH devs. My resumee's ready.

2008: Visual Sounds
Freem!

due to its popularity, it also had become kind of a distinguishing term for the 15 developers who worked on coh from between the launch of cov to the ncsoft buyout. kind of a spartan type designation of the freem 15. humorously the competing superhero game took it as a visual indicator of a certain type of power attack, that may have been part of the reason for the eventual die off.

not at all, it was something that would have worked thematically(a good portion of us play with sound way down and music on anyhow). so while it was a joke, many felt it wouldnt be a bad feature. note that it is in the competing superhero mmo and in the freedom force games. besides, one of this community's strengths is that we like a good joke, it was a lighthearted interchange with the developers and everyone had fun with it.

"FREEM" is actually from the WH40k Webcomic called "Turn-signals on a Land Raider" It's the sound effect for a Laz Cannon. It has since been adopted by geek gamers the land over...

Oh, I agree with all that. I was one of the ones begging for it be implemented for real. I use to have a similar Add-On for WoW that I absolutely loved.

There is a certain unmentionable "similar game" by a studio which is... enigmatic... that used to be associated with this game who stole the idea and actually added it as a "visual sound effect" to their incredibly silly and stupidly subpar version of this game.

So, you know, go there if you want crap like that.

I'd forgotten that one. The 'screenshots' perfectly capture most of the frustration and hatred that I've ever felt toward text-based games.
