If your mouse has greater processing power than your gfx card, the answer is yes.

Oi vey.

European and Japanese swords are meant for very different types of warfare.

A katana's a great slashing weapon, good when your opponent is not armored or is in some sort of plant/animal-derivative armor. Against someone in chain mail, or even brigandine, it's not so effective, and you're probably better off using a club if you can't get to an exposed area.

European swords aren't meant as slashing weapons. Yes, they have something of an edge on them, but they're, for all intents and purposes, highly specialized bludgeoning weapons. The edge they carry facilitates the concentration of force in the blow and helps transmit energy through metal armors and into the wearer. The tip isn't meant to slice into anything, it's meant to be PUSHED into enemies, using the wielder's full weight and depending, again, on concentration of force at the tip to take care of the armor displacement.

It's like comparing a tank to a jet.

Um I'm pretty sure a samuria could easil slice throgh a knights armor + swords in 1 slash. Katans are just so much suprerior that Europ is luck they never fought with japan back in the medevial age.

Hmmm, go with the guy who has well reasoned argument... or the guy who makes blanket statments.

Haha, no. While the Samurai sword is an amazing weapon and certainly very effective, it's not going to cut through swords or armour in one strike.

Quick Youtube search

As you can see, while it is a better sword, it's nowhere near the uber ultra powerful sword of legend.

Oh, god, you were serious.

You actually believe that Katanas are magic or something.

Just stop. Maybe go do some actual research on the subject that isn't a cartoon or movie. The sword nerds in here will eat you alive.

And I say this as someone who actually HAS 'yellow' skin.

Katanas are a work of art, but it would be more difficult to create a meteorite Katana. Creating a Katana requires more specialized people than creating a long sword or whatever Pratchett helped to make.

Katanas remind me of a joke I heard a couple of times in anime.

Protagonist: Don't worry I only hit you with the broad side of my sword.
Protagonist's ally: Uhh, sir. You do realize that it is a double-edged sword (or light sword depending on genre)?
Protagonist: Oops.

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

They're not magic. Throw out all the chop-socky, samurai, and ninja flicks you've ever seen. They're a very good sword that's been perfected for a specific variety of combat over hundreds of years.

But cutting through plate steel (or even 18 gauge chain) is not something it's going to do. Of if it somehow does, it WON'T be doing it again as the edge will look something like this afterward.

Give this essay a read.

Note the portion about halfway down talking about the katana.

Quote:
As a sword, the Japanese katana is unmatched in its sharpness and cutting power. Furthermore, it is particularly good at cutting against metal (–but no, it only cuts through other swords in movies and video games!). However, Medieval plate armor is well known for its resistance to cutting, and cutting at a moving target hidden by a shield or a greatsword is not easy. While the edge of a katana is very strong with a sharp cutting bevel, it is a thick wedge shape and still has to move aside material as it cuts. Though this is devastating on a draw slice against flesh and bone, it is much less effective against armors. Realizing this, several styles of Japanese swordsmanship devised specific techniques not to cut at armor, but to stab and thrust at the gaps and joints of it just as the Europeans did against their own plate armor. The primary technique for fighting nearly any kind of armor with most any kind of sword is not to cut but to thrust at the gaps and joints.
