slow down or the little girl gets it
I'm more concerned that someone might not realise fast enough, slam on the brakes and cause an accident that way.
Not sure this is a wonderfully intelligent idea, will be interested in seeing results from the trial though.

I'll be waiting to hear about the first accident that causes. But it said they're only keeping it up for a week right? And we don't know how busy the street usually is, so if there aren't any problems, they're free to assume it worked, eh?

Also, this is an idiotic idea. I foresee several people swerving out of the way needlessly.
Personally, I'm more worried about the inevitable idiot who sees a real little girl and decides it has to be one of the illusions, and just keeps going.

Hmm... they put it immediately after a crosswalk. In theory, if you were driving according to the law, you'd have already slowed for the approaching walk/school zone, thus wouldn't need to be screeching to a halt.
In theory.
Not sure how I feel about this-- or its effectiveness. optical illusions generally affect people that are already looking and being attentive. Hitting kids in crosswalks is usually due to distracted driving. (or people desperate for a 15 point boost to their scorecard... :P )

edit: Also, the hologram is on a street next to a school, so it would see heavy traffic in the morning and afternoon. It's not like they stuck it at the end of a cul-de-sac or out in the middle of nowhere on the Alaska Highway.
Goodbye, I guess.

"It flattens out. Almost like it's painted on the roadway. Isn't that something?"
Please let me use the R-word... PLEASE!!!! Preferably preceded by the gerund form of the F-word.
==========
There won't be accidents from people slamming on their brakes thinking it's real. There will be many run-overs of actual children who will be standing in the middle of the road to look at the special effect, though.

Going about this completely the wrong way, all Canada has to do is hire a bunch of pissed off 65-70 year old ex-military guys to hand out tickets. They'd do it for free.
I think my old man gets out of the house and drives down the road just to catalog any infraction of the law (however slight) he can see while saying "all they have to do is give me a ticket book and I'd have these bastards shaped up in no time".

Why don't they just do pictures of potholes instead?

Vancouver is not "Canada" anymore than San Francisco is "America". One city is trying this out in a suburb on one street for one week. It's a stupid idea IMO, and I certainly don't expect any other place to try this afterwards.
In England, we just show public service announcements like this:

You may not want to watch if you're squeemish.
And no, it's not the 'If you hit me at 40 miles per hour, there's a seventy percent chance I'll die.' one.
At least the dog made it out fine.

Dumb idea. I think the reason why has already been adequately explained.
OK this is just creepy. Canada is trying a new method to get drivers to slow down. Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand it is innovative but it could mean that if it takes off and people get used to it they may never slow down for kids.
