slow down or the little girl gets it

OK this is just creepy. Canada is trying a new method to get drivers to slow down. Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand it is innovative but it could mean that if it takes off and people get used to it they may never slow down for kids.

I'm more concerned that someone might not realise fast enough, slam on the brakes and cause an accident that way.

Not sure this is a wonderfully intelligent idea, will be interested in seeing results from the trial though.

I'll be waiting to hear about the first accident that causes. But it said they're only keeping it up for a week right? And we don't know how busy the street usually is, so if there aren't any problems, they're free to assume it worked, eh?

Also, this is an idiotic idea. I foresee several people swerving out of the way needlessly.

Personally, I'm more worried about the inevitable idiot who sees a real little girl and decides it has to be one of the illusions, and just keeps going.

Hmm... they put it immediately after a crosswalk. In theory, if you were driving according to the law, you'd have already slowed for the approaching walk/school zone, thus wouldn't need to be screeching to a halt.

In theory.

Not sure how I feel about this-- or its effectiveness. optical illusions generally affect people that are already looking and being attentive. Hitting kids in crosswalks is usually due to distracted driving. (or people desperate for a 15 point boost to their scorecard... :P )

It looks pretty cartoony. I'd say that if anyone mistakes it for a real girl, there's more for them to worry about than swerving into a tree. Plus, with all the press this is getting (I heard a story about in on the NPR station down here in SoCal) you'd have to be living under a rock not to know what's going on and expect to see the girl hologram when you drive down that particular section of road.

edit: Also, the hologram is on a street next to a school, so it would see heavy traffic in the morning and afternoon. It's not like they stuck it at the end of a cul-de-sac or out in the middle of nowhere on the Alaska Highway.

Goodbye, I guess.

Seriously, the guy is a bloody genius when it comes to doing these artworks. There was a 10 part tv series called Concrete Canvas showing him going to different cities around the world and how he did them chalk drawings, very impressive stuff.

I dunno if it's been shown anywhere else, but you can get hold of them on You Tube easy enough

"It flattens out. Almost like it's painted on the roadway. Isn't that something?"

Please let me use the R-word... PLEASE!!!! Preferably preceded by the gerund form of the F-word.

==========

There won't be accidents from people slamming on their brakes thinking it's real. There will be many run-overs of actual children who will be standing in the middle of the road to look at the special effect, though.

The troump l'oile.. the treomp loil'e... the trump loy chalk works should find a home in theme parks where they make it not of chalk but some semi-permanent process and put a protective glaze over it.

Going about this completely the wrong way, all Canada has to do is hire a bunch of pissed off 65-70 year old ex-military guys to hand out tickets. They'd do it for free.

I think my old man gets out of the house and drives down the road just to catalog any infraction of the law (however slight) he can see while saying "all they have to do is give me a ticket book and I'd have these bastards shaped up in no time".

Why don't they just do pictures of potholes instead?

Because it's not about making people slow down. It's population control.

What if people get used to a girl being on the road?

And when there's actually a real girl they don't slow down and run her over.

Stupid idea imo.

Vancouver is not "Canada" anymore than San Francisco is "America". One city is trying this out in a suburb on one street for one week. It's a stupid idea IMO, and I certainly don't expect any other place to try this afterwards.

You may not want to watch if you're squeemish.

And no, it's not the 'If you hit me at 40 miles per hour, there's a seventy percent chance I'll die.' one.
Ok now thats a PSA! Sad that we still need to use these though.

Dumb idea. I think the reason why has already been adequately explained.
