Ninja Run
Yeah, it does seem that there are only 5 people without Ninja Run nowadays (Me included...) but it is still possible to make great builds without Ninja Run or the travel power at level 6 vet reward.
So does everyone pretty much have ninja run these days?
I have been looking for build ideas/help on the forums for the last few hours and pretty much every build expects the person to have ninja run. Are the days of a travel at 14 or a bit later due to a temp travel gone? Do I have to buy the booster pack to have some of these builds work? ugh I did it again... Rather then playing the game I am stuck on the forums too scared to experiment with my own builds. |
Active (Freedom): Setna (Ice/Psi Dom), Arram (WP/KM Tank), Tesmiel (Elec/SS Tank), Astredax (Robot/Dark Mastermind), Operative Vidali (melee fortunata)
Retired (Virtue): Gaav (Inv/EM Tank), Baqra (Fire/SS Tank)
I often use Ninja Run until I take a travel power at 6 or 14 or even much later. I only have two characters where I plan to only use ninja run as a travel power. One is a martial artist, and the is an agile cat person. But yes, I do use it on nearly every one at the lower levels.
@SBeaudway on Pinnacle, TaskForce Titans Supergroup.
It seems like the majority in Praetoria have it... including those without a single veteran badge. I think they see others with it and ask "Hey wow how are you running and/or jumping so much better than me?" and of course we answer NINJA RUN! and they go and purchase it.
ninja run lets me cram two more powers into my build instead of taking prereq and travel power.
best 10 bucks i spent on this game

My City Was Gone
I use Ninja Run on any characters with a really tight build. Really saves on slots/pool choices, plus it is usable at level 4! Actually, I now use it on any character that I don't have a concept/rationale for an actual travel superpower.
I would agree with the previous statement of "Best ten bucks I have spent on the game".

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name
[u]Arcs[u]
The Scavenger Hunt: 187076
The Instant Lair Delivery Service: 206636
I'm one of the five without NR and I still take travel powers (and many of my toons would still get Fly for concept).
Though, I have to say, Quickness + Swift + Sprint on a /SR toon can actually cover ground pretty quickly. I'm lacking Swift on my BS/SR and, with just a run speed SO in the base slot on Quickness and Sprint, I'm moving around at about 40 mph. I'm fairly sure Swift + Sprint can do the same without adding slots. Also, I don't remember who showed me the vid of it being done, but with a /SR toon, it's possible to get close to the run speed cap with just slotted Sprint/Quickness/Swift. Toss in Elude and you are at the cap for three-minutes.
Yeah and personally I hate the look of ninjarun. So I can't even think to use that ever. It's not superheroic looking way to travel.

Not to mention most people look like idiots with it on.
Last night I made a new character. I finished the tutorial and was standing in front of Duncan. I look around and checked out other people's costumes and read their descriptions. There was a high tech robot, a demon summoner, a mob boss, a drug dealer, and an Amazonian Princess... and all of them have ninja run on. This is on virtue, too. At least half of those people are roleplayers. Talk about killing any chance of immersion when they're all standing there like ninjatards and doing flips like night elves on crack.
Honestly, I can't take any of those people seriously.

My City Was Gone
It may also have something to do with the fact that there are no temp travel powers in Praetoria. Raptor Packs and Zero G Packs make getting around in the early game without Ninja Run much easier, but without them you're stuck with only Sprint from levels 4-13 if you don't have the City Traveler vet reward. And even if you do have City Traveler, "wasting" a power pick that early is a pain compared to using temp travel powers. I usually use the Zero G Pack plus Hurdle until the mid 20s or so to get more primary and secondary powers early (plus making sure I can take Stamina at 20), but on Praetorians I can't do that so I'm very glad for Ninja Run and the new improved Sprint speed.

One of them is *gasp* a ninja.
The other one is a catgirl who should run and jump quite a bit faster than a human, but not quite fast enough for superspeed and not quite high enough for superjump. Ninja Run gives her exactly the kind of superhuman mobility she ought to have.
So, for some characters, Ninja Run can suit just perfectly.
For my others, I tend to prefer Fly.
I heartily agree.
There are only a few powers that make you look just plain....dumb.
Whirlwind, Jump Kick, and Ninja Run are on that list.
I've used it a few times, but I always take a real travel power. Heck, with the fitness proliferation, I'm probably going to be taking multiple travel powers on quite a few toons.
There are far worst things running around that can't taken seriously to worry about ninja run. No amount of 'cool' looking sprint can make up for some of the really bad character backgrounds and costumes I've seen in my day.
Shrug ... it gets the job done and you can glitch it with sprint to not look retarded while running and just toggle it off when you stop.

The thing with character backgrounds is that I don't have to be looking at it. If it's bad, I read it once and laugh, then move on. With Ninja Run I see it everywhere. Twelve people standing around the same NPC all in the same funky looking stance is just too ridiculous to me.
Bad costumes are at the same level as Ninja run, imo.

These two factors gave me an incentive to look into finding a way to toggle-off NR through normal play (Using the keybind file.), without having to go to the extra step of remembering to turn it off. Once I got something working I then slapped myself up-side the head because I realized I could have done the same thing with Sprint years ago. This also gave me an idea on how to toggle-on my offense auras, even when I had not realized that they had been shut off.
Ninja Run has made my game more efficient, both in travel and gaming, but in the long run, it's that I find it so fricken fun, that makes it well worth the ten bucks I spent on it.
