So I saw Machete

AND I DUG IT... perfect mix of mindless action, cool one liners, and grind house style cinema... If you have to have your brain "on" to watch a movie skip this one. If you want a fun popcorn throwback... see it..

also.. yeah now I am weary of where hot chicks keep their cell phones...

Seems most of the critics are liking it as well, which somewhat surprises me.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

Michelle Rodriguez. That is all.

Sure, there was great action, blood and guts (literally!), badassness all around. But she's who I went to see, and I was not disappointed. Actually there were lots of hot women in this movie, those two nurses and that evil Asian (?) chick especially. And, you know, Jessica Alba.

Loved that scene with Jeff Fahey rampaging through that house. I like him anyway, nice to see him be a badass.

I laughed really hard at "...*ding* Extra Crispy!"

Gotta say though, the "final battle" was a little weak. You could tell (Robert) Rodriguez et al got to that point and said "Yeah, we're pretty much out of ideas to be over the top now, you've seen enough awesomeness so far to blow your mind ten times over, let's just finish this up." Or possibly I WAS just drained by then, the movie's a lot to take in.

So it's not perfect. But it's 8.5/10 for me. Paid full price for this one and it was worth it.

Now I'm off to find more pics of Michelle Rodriguez in a leather bikini, because DAMN.

Edit: Ah, I wondered where I had seen those nurses before. They were also the babysitter twins in Grindhouse.

So... I take it a Jessica/Michelle love scene (or clothes ripping cat fight) never materialized

One movie can only contain so much awesome.

ok, chrome broached the topic, but which one would you say is better sho? or anyone else. I suspect that machete may be more my speed, not just because of michelle redriguez(though she does help), but because it seems to be a bit more balanced between hand to hand fights and gun battles, whereas expendables seems to be straight up gun-porn

You'd be wrong on the expendables.

Non gun fights happen quite a bit. It does a good mix of both.

As far as quality goes r_f, it's no question in my mind, Machete is the better movie. Expendables isn't bad or unworthy mind you, it's just not as good. However, Expendables does have a lot more hand-to-hand unarmed combat. Machete has quite a bit of knife, mop, stiletto-heel, weedwacker, and sword action, but I only recall one instance of Machete himself punching anybody, though Sartana (Alba) does fight a guy while unarmed for a few seconds too.

Machete is hack and slash, with interludes of shooting (mostly by the bad guys). The Expendables is shoot 'em up, with occasional missions where they take your weapons, or you're playing Jason Statham on a basketball court.

I'm seeing it tonight. What will bring Machete over Expendibles in my mind would be just being able to see the fights...in which in Expendibles you really couldn't see much of.

When I first heard that Machete was being made into a full-length film, I was excited. The original, faux-trailer looked like great fun, and I was a fan of much of Rodriguez's previous work.

However, my hopes for the film were violently dashed when the infamous "Cinco de Mayo" trailer came out, depicting Machete as an anti-American, "hate whitey" propaganda piece which advocates for civilian Mexicans to invade and conquer this country. Although Rodriguez later insisted that the "Cinco de Mayo" trailer was only a joke and was not really what the film is about, I still had my suspicions.

I was planning to go see the film tonight, but I just found a movie review which, if accurate, confirms that my suspicions were correct. I've suddenly lost all interest in seeing this movie.

Yeah Stallone doesn't get much credit for being a writer and director, I think his movies where he does those things are actually quite good, Rocky, Rocky Balboa, Rambo 4, Expendibles.. there is a bit of realism to it.

Matchete was a great pop corn flick but a lot of it you know in a 10000 years it wouldn't happen. (There is nothing wrong with that BTW) I enjoyed both movies. And if you're a movie fan of Action movies I would recommend to see both, but if your into more of a realistic action plot, Expendibles is probably better suited for you, as Matchete seemed to be a little more over the top than Expendibles was. If you're just a popcorn action junkie then both movies fit the bill for you. No reason to compare one way or the other. I liked both movies for different reasons.

I just saw the movie and thought it was frigg’n awesome!

The reviewer John Nolte got a lot of things wrong.

* It wasn’t about Mexican’s against Americans. It was about Mexicans against a criminal politician and vigilantes funded by a Mexican drug cartel.
* The speech that Jessica Alba, who was an American immigration officer in the movie, said wasn’t a call to arms against America, she was saying it to try to get the day laborers, who all knew she was an American immigration officer, to trust her into telling where Machete was.
* The so called “race war” the day laborers fought against was against criminals Caucasian and Mexican as well as a couple of Chinese girls (though I will give that most of them were Caucasian).
* The 3-way he talks about was the same exact scene taken from the trailer in Grindhouse, and didn't go more into it than the trailer did. Actually, much of the movie was put together around scenes from the Machete trailer in Grindhouse that he praises so much.
* I also don’t remember Cheech Marin ever cussing in the movie.

Wow, this guy is just full of it. I say there is probably more politicaly motivated retoric in that guy's review than in all of Machete.

I remember seeing the grindhouse films back to back and when the Machete ad came on, assuming it was some sort of spoof ad, I said" now THAT would be a cool movie"

and so it is, ask and ye shall receive.

It's more like white middle America aren't overly familiar with the films of Robert Rodriguez. Machete first appeared 9 years ago in Spy Kids for crying out loud.

The fanatical right reading into Machete is just like the fanatical left reading into Iron Man. The only lesson here are fanatics see and hear what they want to see and hear.

Reminds me of Ann Coulter's review of War of the Worlds. She interpreted it to be some kind of liberal political statement against the war in Iraq. I guess no one told her the story was written in 1898.

If you're worried about hateful propaganda, stop reading that website.

Also- Thomas Jefferson didn't say that.

Do you trust what Hollywood has to say about politics?
Then why trust what politicos have to say about movies?

Some more random quotes that we do not believe are genuine:
"When the government fears the people, there is liberty; When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."

Well the "Is it terrorists?" line that gets repeated by the kids during the early part of the film combined with the image Tom Cruise covered in people dust do sort of reflect on post 9/11 America.

It's not unusual for the source material of a film to be bent to convey a particular point of view. Take the two versions of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Neither match the short story which had a Twilight Zone twist ending about man's first encounter with aliens. The 50s version was about the dangers of war in the post atomic era as well as the Red scare, the remake was all about environmental issues.

I saw Machete on Friday first thing. I took my wife and my 13 year old. While the "phone" scene was way more than I should have let my kiddo see, the rest of the movie was great. I loved the feel of it and I loved the story line. I didn't feel it was a "hate whitey" movie. Yes racism has a part in it but more than anything it has a right vs wrong view that deal more with politics than it does race.

But if you're sensitive to white guys being bad guys then don't see this movie. Simple as that. But being a white guy, it didn't bother me one iota! I highly recommend this movie.
