So what can you do to avoid this in the future? There will be queues, servers will go down.
1. Pick a server that isn't Freedom or Virtue.
Here is a brief description of each.
2. Get some friends together from your server.
You DO have friends, or at least SG mates, who will tag along, right?
3. Form a "theme team," "theme SG," or something else on the new server.
This gets rid of the "But I don't know anyone there!" complaint.
4. Play once a week or so.
This builds up money, prestige, and levels characters.
5. Invite others.
Suddenly - wow, you have people to play with on another server if you can't get into Freedom! With the new merged markets/global email/etc, you can't (well, shouldn't, I'm sure some will anyway) complain that anyone will be "starting off broke" or whatever.

Start a new character on a different server, play for a bit and then use your free transfers to send them to Freedom.
I'm okay with large queues now and my mains are on Virtue. Even if we lose (to randomly grab a number) 50% of the population boost within a month, more people now means more people later when the numbers are lower.

What i really don't understand is why the age of a game is relevant to server capacity. It's not like the servers are some sort of plant that grows and increases capacity as time goes by. Yes, they've upgraded the servers several times, but all servers have limits on how many people can access at once... Hell, the Devs even added a queue system so that you don't end up refreshing server list over and over to see if it'll let you log onto your server of choice.
Maybe the OP thinks that the standard MMO budget has them buying more server racks every year that then go into storage until there's an increase in server demand. Then the Devs wander into the cavernous warehouse that holds row upon row of idle server racks and then they drag out as many as are needed and plug them in, whereupon the miraculous AIs that live in the servers instantly integrate the new racks into the server architecture. An infinitely scalable server architecture that can also generate new ports and net connections through the reality warping powers of the transcendent server AIs.
Or maybe the OP just has a deficit of patience and critical thinking skills, and a bit too much petulance and sense of entitlement.
Personally i prefer the godlike server AI scenario.
