Hidden From Searches

I'm still failing to see why so many of you think that when it comes to the use of the Hidden From Searches tool that forumites would be all that different from the general populace.

Do I expect better builds from forumites? Yes.
Do I expect forumites to be more up to date on changes occurring with the game? Yes.

But /hide usage? No, I'm just not seeing it.

But either way it boils down to two things:
Either the 1/3 hidden is accurate in which case we probably have around 60-65000 active subs, or yall are right and far less of the actual population uses /hide, in which case sub numbers are even lower.

Either way, it ain't lookin all that good.

Be well, people of CoH.

Yes.

Before I load my settings, accept my Vet badges, close the first pop-up window, or anything else I hit /hide.

Could you stand at Miss Liberty at Freedom/Virtue Atlas Park... or maybe Positron/Valkyrie in Steel Canyon and /search for every character who walks by? You'd get a large selection of players in a short time.

Maybe an even better spot would be by the Ouroboros entrance. It serves characters 25+ (plenty of time to get their settings as they like them, etc.) and people use the place as a travel hub... so even if they only pop in for a second, you will see a ton of players. Probably far more than you would at any one Trainer.

Very true.... I was on this evening, and popped in for a few seconds on my way to PI during an STF I was doing, and during those few seconds, I saw about a dozen or so.

I don't even know if there's a way of opening the Hide option box without typing "/hide" - I learnt that on the forum - does anything in-game tell you how to do it? It's been years since I read any of the instructions.

I'm probably a 50/50 hider, so statistically meaningless...*sigh* story of my life.

There is a 'Hide' button at the bottom of your global friends list. Clicking that brings up the little box.

Global whatnow?

I haven't used that since I left the EU servers.

The forumites are also generally more well-educated about how the game works. The hide-from-searches functionality isn't exactly a big obvious button in the middle of the screen. Heck, if you plopped me down in front of the game right now and told me to hide from searches, I'd probably have to fiddle with a few menus to remember how to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of the game's population doesn't even know it's possible.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Actually, another possibility is that a greater percentage of players hide from searches than the percentage of the forum-goers.
Funny how only one assumption is made.
We could easily provide reasons for either case to be true.

Assuming anything is foolish, hehe.

As for a very minor analysis such as this, I don't see a major problem with using these percentages.
Trying to lump any large group together is foolhardy. Saying that we are the same because we visit the forums is nonsense. We can witness the disparity very easily between us.
No, the forum goers do not represent the whole of the playerbase, that is for sure.
Just the same, the population of both elements (forum-goers and non-forum-goers) are diverse within themselves.

Just as one points out their expectations of what a forum-goer may be better at than a non-forum-goer, we can point to exceptions that we know of.
Experts that never use the forums and the opposite.
Unless, one suggests, that all forum-goers and frequenters are experts and apply their great knowledge skillfully to their game, heehee... Pretty sure we see plenty of that not being the case.

And, in zero means mocking anyone:

For each and every forum-goer such as this, there are equal (supposed) exceptions to the assumed rules that non-forum users have less of a grasp on the game mechanics.

Hehe, I'm just saying, is all.

Honestly, I only hide from searches due to that was the most frequent means in which spammers would latch onto me and send me crap.

I choose to hide from searches and use networking to get teams while leaving my email options open for anyone to send me email.

Unbelievable. I got negative rep for this comment "for not being funny"!

I just want to point out to the muppet who wrote that, that "it wasn't a joke"; I was saying I haven't seen the button because I don't have reason to use the Global list.

I recently moved to the NA servers because all my friends had left CoH in the EU. I admit to being billy-no-mates and someone decides to punish me by taking almost a quarter of my forum rep off me?

Nice!

No I don't bother to hide or ignore. I usually just ignore tells that come, if I don't wanna talk or team.

Haha, Bull Throttle, people are nuts!
Hopefully I balanced ya out there.

Also, I just realized that I know two people who have never posted on the forums (Probably have never signed in) that are always hiding from searches.
Not suggesting to add that in. It just struck me as I was thinking on this topic.
I just don't think that players who remain off of the forums are naturally going to prove any which way on this subject.
The difference in percentage could be + or -

I would guess the hider percentage is close to 25-30% of the stable population of each server. One method is to do a zone search during a raid or event when the zone is full.

Hami raids are the easiest. Justice usually has 33-40 people in the zone before it gets locked out. AFAIR, the maximum population in the hive is 50, so the math is relatively easy. RWZ would be more difficult since you'd need to do cross faction counting but the idea is the same.

Zone counting has fewer problems than forum polling but YMMV.

PS. I never hide unless I don't want to be found. >.>
