What's with these reputation thing?

Came back to CoH a couple weeks now and notice this red bar, used to be green, under my name. I have also seen posts where people are crying about their reputation.

So what the hell is this exactly? If I'm at -140 rep, does that mean that these 140 people hate me so much that they had to "ARGHH MUST DISAPPROVE POST!" ?

More or less. It's mostly just useless, like the old star rating system. It's not exactly 1 vote to 1 point of rep. People with higher rep have a bigger effect when they vote.

You can turn off it's display in your forum profile settings.

It's a feature that is rarely used as intended.

Activated rep on these boards is just an indicator that the mods have short memories.

It'll eventually get canned like the stars did. It's really just a stupid drama magnet.

BAD REP FOR YOU!

[not really]

I disabled mine. I should enable it to see what color it is.

EDIT - I turned it back on, but where can I see the little comments like "Means well" or "Mostly harmless" that go along with the votes?

Sadly, you have to go to EACH and EVERY post and click the little scales to see the comments (and if there weren't any, it just tells you your current rep points). I stopped looking a while ago.

I want to max it out and see how far red it can go. Don't mind me if I start TROLLINZ!

Or intended as used.

It appears your plan is foiled in advance. Good luck hitting red now.

I LoL'd.

Boxxy (AKA: Boxxybabee, Moldy Lunchbox, Catherine Gomez), uploaded a few short videos in early 2009 that got an unusually crazy response. I don't see the big deal. All she did was ramble on about a couple of her friends on GaiaOnline and defend herself to responses to her first videos.

Supposedly, she is/was part of a group called Mischiefmakers that try to mess with the "outside world" and promote GaiaOnline, in exchange for winning more online currency.

Anyway, her videos have been edited, re-edited and re-uploaded with several variations by now... and many people make caption pictures from them. I guess the marketing worked?

Ah, i'd heard the name before, and seen some animated gifs based on the videos, but hadn't paid much attention past that.

Thanks.

Partly. The amount of effect you have is based on your rep, number of forum posts and years since you registered on the forums.

People kept leaving bad comments (I think some idiots actually thought the mods couldn't see who left what, despite it being anonymous from our POV) and ignore didn't stop people from commenting on you (if you had them on ignore, you would still see their rep comments). Between the two, it was disabled.

Your +/- rep value is based on your rep, post count/1000 (iirc), +1 per full registered year. So my rep flags have, ignoring my rep, 19 points of rep. Also, I think neg rep is also halved (it's easier to gain than lose rep).

Also, I want to say there is a "rep comparison" between you and whoever you rep, so if you have 0 rep, and you rep someone with major rep... it doesn't count :P

Decent amount of details out there if you Google "vBulletin Rep System"

Oh, yes, the story of the reaction to Boxxy is far far more interesting than she herself could ever hope to be.

Just to be clear, what was disabled? Because the way you put it, it sounds like leaving comments was disabled (that's not true, is it? If so, you gave me news). Do you mean the "read it all on one page" comments?

simply to say, these forums are an example of how to NOT use the Rep System

Yes, sorry if that wasn't clear. I was indeed referring to bit that collected ALL rep comments posted to you in the UserCP.

should check out animesuki.com, their rep system is ran better point-wise and the people with higher rep don't have a huge effect on someone else with lower rep.

I don't think there is any kind of comparison built into it by default. You'd have to add your own scripts for that.

The reason a person with 0 rep doesn't count is because there is usually a "minimum rep" and/or "minimum posts" category that the admin can set so that you'd have to have rep before you can give it. That's what gives you the "rep power" that is also affected by the other things you mentioned.

It's not about how it's run to me. It's that it has "Dramafest over something meaningless" as its Inherent.
